This actually was a some sort of a festival, where several bands played 1-2 songs and were done for today (to be precise there were around 20 bands). So first couple rows of seats were taken by musicians, hence the outfits and generally more alive attitude and reaction to the music. The rest of the crowd were normal USSR people, and back then it was considered bad if you show too much emotions. So most of them didn't show emotions at all, but instead they were thinking about what is being sung by the singer. This particular song has timeless lyrics, they were actual 30 years ago, they are actual now, they will be in another 30 years, at least for native speakers.

Re: the audience. Having lived in Russia, Russians aren't as expressive (at least immediately, or to strangers) as we might expect from Brits or Americans. Also, it's worth remembering that this is in difficult times - two years before the fall of the Berlin Wall and four years before the Soviet Union collapsed. Times weren't great. Finally, it's not "happy" music; the words are melancholic, longing. While some of the audience may be indifferent, I'd imagine for most of them the song spoke to and resonated with them.
Its a sad song in troubled times. The singer and the dood with glasses unfortunately both passed not long ago... plus there is actually a VERY VERY GOOD REMIX . ( seriously its great)
