  • State Senator Willie Preston hosted his second annual #Juneteenth Day celebration on June 19 at O'Hallaren Park in #Chicago.
“Hosting events in our community allows us to teach the next generation about the significance of this historic date,” said Preston (D-Chicago). “This event commemorates an important date in our history while bringing together the community.”
The event will featured food, music, a basketball tournament, giveaways and more. With a focus on commemorating Juneteenth's history and honoring the continuous fight for justice and equality in Illinois and beyond, this celebration aims to unite residents, community leaders and organizations.
Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, marks the day when news of the Emancipation Proclamation finally reached enslaved African Americans in Texas on June 19, 1865, effectively granting them freedom.
“This celebration builds an appreciation for our culture,” said Preston. “It not only celebrates our shared cultural traditions but also serves as a platform for dialogue, understanding and mutual respect, further strengthening our community. I look forward to hosting this event each year, for this very reason.”
