- Silver Blaze is a 1937 British, black-and-white crime and mystery film, based loosely on Arthur Conan Doyle's short story "The Adventure of Silver Blaze". It was directed by Thomas Bentley, and was produced by Twickenham Film Studios Productions. It stars Arthur Wontner as Sherlock Holmes, and Ian Fleming as Dr. Watson. In the United States the film was released in 1941 by Astor Pictures, where it was also known as Murder at the Baskervilles, retitled by distributors to capitalize on the success of the Basil Rathbone Holmes film, The Hound of the Baskervilles.
Director: Thomas Bentley
Writer: Arthur Conan Doyle
Starring: Arthur Wontner, Ian Fleming, Lyn Harding, John Turnbull, Robert Horton
William Gillette was a remarkable Sherlock Holmes and had a “castle” built in Connecticut with secret passageways & hidden rooms. My sister first took me there as a present because of my love of Sherlock Holmes, actors & unique buildings. It became a favorite place for me to visit
This is actually a BRITISH print of the film, hence the opening title "SILVER BLAZE". American prints, under the title "MURDER AT THE BASKERVILLES", are MISSING several scenes, including the opening scene where the real estate agent shows Moran the warehouse. I have this on a copy of a videotape I rented ages ago, but the DVD I bought recently begins when Moran shows Moriarty the interior. I haven't checked in detail yet to see what else is missing from the U.S. prints. It makes me want to look around for a DVD of the U.K. print.
Arthur Wontner was my favorite portrayer of Sherlock Holmes but others did a good job of it to. He mostly resembled Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's drawn picture of Holmes.

This list is not exhaustive. however, these are some of the
many actors who have played Sherlock Holmes on stage,
screen, radio and TV adaptations.
Wow....Rathbone & the Black & White medium is my all time favorite....This one is gonna be good i think ....since it was so Old!
Thank you Agatha Cristie
@@rehab5355 : Sherlock Holmes stories were written by Arthur Conan Doyle. Agatha Christie wrote the Hercule Poirot & Miss Marple stories.

I'm so glad that you mentioned Clive Merrison's radio version. Thank you.
A good quality version of an Arthur Wonter Sherlock Holmes.
Not the same Ian Fleming as the James Bond author
Wow, this is a rare one, and with Ian Fleming yet! Thanks, nice one. Good channel, btw. :)
Not the Ian Fleming of Bond fame.
Excellent film quality
Where did you get this great copy? Would love to get dvd
Interesting in that Ian Fleming bears a resemblance to an older Charles Chaplin!
Worth noting the mild bit of profanity at 1:08:20 when Moriarty hisses "Damn you, Holmes!"
In the U.S. version he says "Curse you, Holmes!"
Sud quality SUKS.
Smoke meth often?
I knew this was going to be a good movie when I saw that James A. Carter was in charge of settings.🙄
WRONG FILM or WRONG TITLE!!!!
They may show Holmes and Mrs. Hudson squabbling all the time, regardless of who plays him, in the end, when Holmes retires to the country to keep bees, guess who he takes with him, Mrs. Hudson. A fun fact. Another one is, the guy playing Watson is the writer of James Bond books. Yep.
Nope.
I didn’t realize that there were two Ian Fleming
Dr Watson, Australian actor
Ian Fleming writer and WW II war department member British socialite
Aw, Shoot! Here I am trying to wrap my mind around this being the Ian Fleming, who wrote the Bond books, and now it’s all up in smoke. Darn!
@@JohnBernardon-py7wf OMG for sure I was so disappointed
@@JohnBernardon-py7wf
Totally agree ruined my day too
Thank you for sharing - truly joyous!!!!
Wonder how Professor was fooled?
Smoking in the elevator. Really, Holmes!
Amazing to see Ian Fleming playing Dr Watson.Apart from his distinguished war record and of course all the bond novels , It was one of his ideas on a list that was chosen to help the allies win the war.Operation Mincemeat The film made about it is called The man who never was.The dead hero who was dead to start with!!! saved thousands of allied soldiers lives in the invasion of Sicily And it was not until recently that he was recognized and given a memorial.
This is Ian Fleming the actor (1888-1969), not Ian Fleming the writer (1908-1964).
@@JOHNLARZONI89 Thank you for your correction :}
a different ian fleming
@@neilputland9407 Thank you for the correction.
Another version of this great story.
The watch dog was an English Bull Terrier. A wonderful animal.
Thanks for Sharing. From Betty.. London UK
wrong title. Should be "Silver Blaze' which you have already done.
I agree. It causes confusions.
It was released as Murder at the Baskervilles in the USA.
It does say Silver Blaze on the beginning screen.
Littered with ads, every five minutes there's two ads
Use a decent browser, such as Firefox, with the adblock extension enabled. I haven't seen any ads on youtube for many years.
How you record this and put into UA-cam?
😲
So,so many actors that I would love to see as Sherlock Holmes starting with Raymod Massey. I can't remember his name but a British actor potrayed Holmes in a Father Dowling mystery. His portrayal was so good as when he was happily moved to see all the modern achievements and when he tried to drive a car. I felt sad when he tempted Dowling t go back with him and failed. What a new series that would have been in the hands of talented writers. Thank you very much for posting this film.

What about it?
is this Ian Fleming the Bond writer?
No, not even close. Two different men. A good resource is IMDB. This Ian Fleming is older than the author.
No. The other Fleming was of the james bond franchise.
the name of the post is *The Murder at the Baskervilles* , and the actual movie is Silver Blaze .... Thumb Down for that.
It was released as Murder at the Baskervilles in the USA.
