    I watched the video three times, but I could not determine the best device. All are great! 73!

    Good Job ! Great selection of Receivers.. I have the Racal too..plus it's internal preamp and an outboard tracking preselector which really transforms the radio in my opinion.

    PPS. Wow, watching the video again I just noticed what I'm sure was a Sony ICF Pro 80. What a great bit of kit for the time period I had one and it even had a preamplifier on the rubber duck type antenna. I wish I still had mine as it was fantastic for picking up airband and vhf marine band signals

      You have a sharp eye! I love that Sony but the internals are very fragile, the caps go bad and the fancy switches eat themselves to failure. It is a very cool design though

    Brilliant shack, each receiver is a grail device so a very interesting and enjoyable comparison. I think the Harris was vying with the WJ in signal quality although the Racal was very quiet through the dsp speaker. Interesting to see 👀 an R9000 too as it must be one of the rarest and with such a wide frequency range it was doing a great job on the shortwave bands. I would be interested to see the 9000 covering the 118-137 a.m. airband and above, also a shoot-out between all of the receivers on a good strong medium wave station to compare the audio through the different I.F. filters and the difference between the models with synchronous a.m. to those without although I think only the WJ has S.A.M but very enjoyable video, thanks for the upload.

      Thanks Shaun. I will see about a 9000 video as I haven’t done a dedicated one yet. I did do a whole vid about sync as a listening enhancement, you may enjoy it. Or disagree vehemently as some did…let me know what you think.

      P.S. a great choice of loop antenna 📡 👌 I bought the ALA 1530 from Andy Ilkin just after they had come onto the market here in the UK and when I first turned my AOR 7030+3 Aniversary Edition on connected to it indoors I was amazed by the quietness of it and the strength of the nulls so its a great reference when doing these types of comparisons between high end communications receivers.

    Nice test, To me, it sounded like the WJ was 1st place followed by the Harris, slightly, then the Icom and Racal seemed very close. I have the Racal 6790 and the Harris 590 NON A. I keep looking for a nice WJ which is working OK. I restore R390 series receivers including the R 389, 390 , 390A, 391 and 392, In my experience on weak signals, wither the 390 or 390A out preform my Racal and Harris by a fair margin. They are more of a pain to tune than the newer rx's but they have a very low noise floor, decent selectivity, good filter selection and fair to OK audio, The R390 non A sounds better. However, I am a BIG fan of the Hammarlund HC10 product detectors which give, among many other option, a second audio path. That path was better than the stock R 390 and a good but better than the R390A.

    Nice set up. So what is your opinion? How would you rank these receivers in terms of performance and usability?

    • @dieselten01
      @dieselten01  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for your comments. All of these radios are super sensitive, the WJ has a little better selectivity but the others have sufficient selectivity for anything I have ever tried to hear. The only clear advantage in usability goes to the Icom due to the spectrum scope. That scope makes it easy to find signals that you might have easily skipped over without the scope.

    • @dieselten01
      @dieselten01  3 роки тому +1

      Yes Harris made a series of hi end receivers that were too expensive for wide spread commercial use. I have a 505A from the early 1970’s and a 590 from around 2000. I have a dedicated video on the 505A it is a really cool receiver. They also made a 550 that I would love to get

      g13flat I would keep the WJ8711 because of the Sync AM and the multiple band widths and the pre amp. But it would be like picking which of my children too keep. None of them suck, they are all great. Having the scope like on the 9000 is hard to live without after you use it for a while.
