Andreas was the wise one at this subject, but you wouldn’t allow him to finish a sentence, just kept talking over him when he was trying to explain things, sorry bro but let THE MAN SPEAK
as a student of flamenco, I can attest that proper fingernails are not an option, they're a must. and you've almost got that rasgueado down, Sean, nice work!
finger picking with nails makes your guitar playing sound 1000x more skillful no matter if you play exactly the same. As someone who has a nail biting habit but wants to grow out his nails I'm jealous of everyone who has nails :(
Andres seams a little nervous when he’s a guest on your channel Sean. But when he is on his own channel, he demonstrates complete confidence in communicating and certainly in his playing.
Nails just make playing so much easier - and they open up so many more tunes which would be impossible by pick alone. There's nothing more mesmerising than hearing yourself easily playing what was a fiendishly difficult fingerpicking song only a few days ago on automatic pilot a few days later.
Most of my playing is with a thumb pick and fingernails. I use an acrylic nail on the i-m-a fingers of my picking hand. About every three weeks I go to a nail shop to have them filled. Only about $10. I have been doing this for years and have never broken a nail while playing although I have broken a couple doing other work. It's a quick easy fix. FYI, James Taylor does not use acrylic nails but rather a fiber glass wrap. He has a UA-cam video on the subject. I have spoken with Lawrence Juber and Tommy Emanuel and they both cut their nails very short and play with the thick calloused pad they have developed on their respective right hands. They both say it's a lot of work to keep their callouses in playing shape.
I Definitely get self conscious in my work environment when I grow my nails long. But I love playing with my nails on my steel string. Just strumming with nails really let's you manipulate the sound, and start throwing in some alternating base patterns. I normally cut both sides fairly short once my left hand because difficult to play.
Honestly I have grown out my fingernails. But I can't get it down. I always start picking the wrong strings when my nails are to long. So I cut em back again
Yeah dont now if u work nd landscaping or construction than tham it will be really hard not to bend ur nails anyways grow them again nd the fingestyler will sound really good
I have finger picked for years and could never grow a finger nail long enough. They always broke just before they got prefect. Earlier this month got my nails gelled because I was fairly busy this month with music. Huge improvement, too bad it is so expensive to keep up with.
So for those of us common folk with steel string guitars and basic 12-bar blues inclinations, fingerpicking blues guitar doesn't generally make use of nails? Just flesh? Your man Andres has a wonderfully dry sense of humor, Guitar Center and 13 year-old guys not withstanding.
Steel strings quickly wear out nails. For that reason most fingerstyle steel string players either use fingerpicks or just fingers, no nails. None of the famous old blues guys played with nails. Today there are players who use synthetic nails on steel, including James Taylor, but if you want to go that route, realize that fake nails are relatively high maintenance.
Obviously, if you're using a flatpick you don't need nails. Although there are individual exceptions, the overwhelming majority of professional or serious performers of classical and flamenco guitar use nails. Nails give you better attack/clarity, better volume, and better control over tone. Its difficult to execute tremolo without nails. If you're playing nylon, and can do so, you should be using nails. If you're fingerpicking with steel you should consider either no nails, just thumbpick, or thumb and fingerpicks. Although you "can" use nails on steel, they won't last long, and the ones who do this invariably use synthetic nails for durability. That includes the Nashville/Country guys who do hybrid (flatpick and finger) picking. A lot of those guys end up with synthetic nails on the right hand.
I love Andreas... I feel like every time Sean has him on he doesn’t expect him to talk as much as he does or say the things he does and he has to like adjust on the fly to what is happening in the video lol
Go to Nashville. The guitar scene is crazy.. the Telly and chicken picken and b benders … Brent Mason , Johnny highland , Vince Gill, Brad paisley, Steve Wariner, Chet Atkins and many many more all use acrylic nails…
Paul Murray no one "can". It's not easy. It takes a lot of practice but if you want a crisp, rich tone, a good tone, you will need to learn to play with your fingernails. It's about how well you want to play, you decide wether you learn to do it or not.
I keep the nails long on my ring finger and little finger for fingerstyle. I really like the way they sound with the strings. I keep the index and middle finger nails short though because nails suck for playing bass.
I have an ear infection so I now have the time to comment on all your hard work....fingernails are nasty, I appreciate the use for guitar, but I cannot bring myself to grow them out.
just a thought..I`ve been playing a while..I was taught to play with my nails however I keep them very short..just long enough to catch the string..it gives me a wider range of tone and I don`t get any unwanted noise..it`s how was taught to play and is second nature to me..I doubt it would be easy to learn if I`d been playing differently for any length of time..there`s nothing more different to unlearn than a bad habit..on a side note I`ve noticed a lot of classical guitarist are growing their thumb nails very long..I really don`t understand that..if there is a reason for that I would appreciate a comment..I have recently been cutting my thumb nail off completely and that seems to help as I was buzzing a lot
Please, what is the name of the little excerpt he played by the Cuban songwriter? The one where he says, "Check this out". I want to learn that arpeggio really badly now!
The Cuban songwriter is Silvio Rodriguez, very well known in all Latin America, and that excerpt is from the song called 'Ojalá'. Silvio Rodriguez has many songs with really beautiful arpeggios and guitar arrangements, I strongly recommend you to check them out! (Check out 'Quién fuera', for example). Enjoy!
I guess long fingernails would also help you play the banjo. Hey Sean, if you weren't a teacher, which job would you choose that involves playing guitar or any other instrument? For me personally, playing in the background band of a talk show like Jimmy Fallons or colbert would be great.
Acrylics worked great for me, but I had two major problems -- freaky discoloration and nail fungus -- and they virtually destroyed my nail beds. I had to wait a yr. for my nails to not only grow out but to strengthen as well.
Yea, it's a little bit of a hassle having to get them filled every two weeks or so but I'm willing to tolerate that inconvenience -- but the problems I stated discouraged me from continuing with the acrylics. I have to admit however, they work wonderfully -- great attack, tone, control, volume, and they're virtually indestructible. I'm still entertaining the thought of going back to them.
So does nobody else strum with their fingernails as well? Whenever I watch videos like this they only talk about picking with their fingernails. I do that too, but I also strum with my fingernails. Also, is there advantage to using a pick? I can't use one, it feels awkward and I can't play anything if I use a pick. Is there any reason I should try to become comfortable using a pick?
Just depends on your goals really. Like if you want to play metal or shred stuff, you're best off learning to use a pick because IMO it's easier to build that kind of speed with.
For me it feels like my nails have changed after playing with them for a long time. Like they are a little thicker, stronger but they also bend a little bit more
It's a misconception with beginners that the string is played only with nail. It is. It's nail and flesh. Generally, Nails should be filed in a ramp like shape. Look up Pumping nylon for proper shape.
great discussion man such brilliant ideas im really getting into fingerstyle playing, babe im gonna leave you just doesn't sound right with my small fingernails lol
Netron These are some good ones: Romance in E minor - Unknown Lagrima - Tarrega Adelita - Tarrega Un Dia De Noviembre - Brouwer (this one's a little harder but super pretty). Your best bet would be to learn how to read sheet music and find a teacher. Technique is really important for classical guitar so taking at least a few lessons would really help you get started.
I need help shaping the thumb nail. The rest I'm fine with. When I try to figure out tremolo, my thumb nail gets caught. Shocked me you made this video. Thanks.
don caviness might want to consider ramping your thumb nail, a lot of people ramp all their nails. this is essentially filing your nail at an angle so that the string 'ramps' up the nail as you pick it. the ramp of your thumb nail would angle up toward your pointer finger (since you attack the string downward).
That's what's up, Sean. I understand this channel is not for that, and I have other channels to view for that. I view your channel more for dealing with a pick.
I'm starting to think that it is more the way I'm using the thumb. After reviewing the video that taught me to shape my nail, It seems there is nothing wrong in that aspect. thanks for trying to help though.
From personal experience, you should not grow out your nails if you hold your right hand wrong and a lot of amateur players do. I've heard beautiful and loud tones but I've also heard horrible pinching squealing nightmare sounds.
You can overcome it bud. I picked my nails for 20 years. I instead focused on giving myself manicures. Taking care of my cuticles and stuff. Maybe another obsession lol
My guitar teacher told me to grow finger nails. But they are pain in the @$$. I just learned to pick without them an have sharp attack. I am not looking back. I don't think I can even play if I try to grow them back. It would feel very awkward.
Can one do more complicated fingerstyle playing with the finger flesh? I heard someone play a more simple melody with the finger flesh and I really like the sound. But I'm a beginner and want to pick a style and stick to it for a while so I wonder if this is a good style/technique to stick with for more complicated melodies too. right he look like hes talented on guitar wow
I thought he let him speak most of the time
He was trying to make sure the video contains exactly what information it should, but the way he did it was kinda rude
as a student of flamenco, I can attest that proper fingernails are not an option, they're a must. and you've almost got that rasgueado down, Sean, nice work!
Mitchell Wood i agree
Thanks Mitchell! I've got a long ways to go though!
0:25 "Oh, I thought you meant like Mexican and American." LOL
:)
finger picking with nails makes your guitar playing sound 1000x more skillful no matter if you play exactly the same.
As someone who has a nail biting habit but wants to grow out his nails I'm jealous of everyone who has nails :(
Hey dude I’m behind u in that boat pass me a beer☺️
There is clear coat nail polish you can buy that give you nails a bad taste. Good way to kick the habit
Yeah same but once u get it bro its awesome I believe one day you will get it.
Tommy Emmanuel uses his bare fingertips which are extremely calloused but he plays steel strings. Nylon strings require fingernails
did you ever grow them out?
Andres seams a little nervous when he’s a guest on your channel Sean. But when he is on his own channel, he demonstrates complete confidence in communicating and certainly in his playing.
I think that it's just based off of your style that you like to play. Good points though.
Absolutely, not for everyone but can be helpful :)
fingernailsUH
yumiimusic he has rhotacism. Which funny enough he could fix watching UA-cam videos.
Zzzzzz

my guitar playing skills
Hey oh!
Hello. I know I’m responding 3 years later but your profile name and pic made my day.
Honestly I have grown out my fingernails. But I can't get it down. I always start picking the wrong strings when my nails are to long. So I cut em back again
Yeah not a fan personally but Andres is amazing at it!
Sean Daniel True
i have the opposite problem when i cut them i hit wrong strings

Yeah I hear ya, congrats on the improvement though!
It's expensive though to. Will have to get a kit to do at home.
Love it! i have just been schooled on nails.
Thanks for watching!
Stairway to Heaven on classical guitar at the end? LOL
i always cut my nails on my left only of course
You can tell Andreas is a flamenco guitar player by his name and his hair. Very cool video

Good to know!

U both answered every question I had about a guitar players nails. Thx
The best paper for sanding nails is not wet and dry paper, it's micro mesh 3600 or 4000
Thanks for sharing.
Andre was great! Would love to see him in more videos

It sucks because I play piano too and finger nails are a big no no for that but finger picking looks so fun.
Yeah I hear you on that!
Andres, you should do some lessons of classic Mexican style on your site. The Mexican patterns are really cool.
Gracias Colin

Yeah you can make it work though :)
ok , but for acoustic guitar , is good to have nails ?
I prefer not to, it's a personal choice but it has advantages.
do you have any tutorials on classical guitar? I own one but I just use it as acoustic
You should look up classical guitar channels. Sean isn't a classical guitarist.
do you know any ? i only found hard songs for classical guitar
Netron These are some good ones:
Romance in E minor - Unknown
Lagrima - Tarrega
Adelita - Tarrega
Un Dia De Noviembre - Brouwer (this one's a little harder but super pretty).

Who else here bites their nailed and is wanting to know if if affects your guitar playing
I used to bite my nails, im so happy ever since i stopped
What's the song he plays at 1:45?
I think he's just playing around over a few chords.
WHAT ?? James Taylor uses acrylic nails ?? Check his tutorials on nails , mate .... You'll find out that his uses a type of fibreglass fabric hardened with an epoxy type solution (not resin) .... Hardly acrylic nails !!
I guess I just meant an artificial nail. Like I said, def not an expert on the names :)
Sean Daniel then again , anybody fingerpicking for a couple of hours a day uses some kind of trick ... Only a very, very few have been genetically gifted with nails that can take the battering of long practices ... human nails are just simply not meant to do that...
new sub here your channel is awesome!
Welcome to the party Cristofer!
Sandpaper? A nail file?
How can you NOT recognize Led Zeppelin - "Stairway to heaven"!? You're guitarist for crying out loud!
:)
I often remember the melody but not the name. If it's the same with him them then it's not that he didn't recognize the song but just couldn't recollect the name.
It was sarcasm you muppet
My right index nail is fucked .. won’t grow out .. has a weird low spot making the edge grow upward and my nails delaminate from psoriasis :(
I use super glue and dip my nail in baking soda twice to build up a fake nail then a quick pass with sand paper ,emery board or the side walk to keep the top and edge from catching on the strings.. takes 2 mins lasts at least a day or two.. prolly making it worse but I can play my gig without any pain .. thinking about an acrylic.. but this works .
