Astro's Playroom is a must play, it comes predownloaded on every PS5 and I'd really like to know your opinion about the haptic feedback/adaptive triggers of the dualsense, it's only 2~3 hours long in total so it shouldn't take much of your time. Another one is of course Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, it's a 8 hours long open world game that utilize RT on 60fps mode, they also recently added some machine learning stuff to make muscle deformation more accurate. I would also recommend Returnal because from what reviews are saying it's the best showcase of dualsense features and 3d Audio on PS5 along with Astro's Playroom so far. And hell yeah I'd like you to make a series where you react/analyse video games while playing them. It's be really interesting to watch. Also is it just me or your hair became a little more reddish? Lol Anyway thanks for keeping this channel alive, was really sad when you stopped uploading, keep up the good work mate.
To be fair, I think the game looks quite good in motion but I can understand how you’re seeing so many issues in still frames of gameplay. Part of this could be due to UE4’s temporal upscaling technique. This is one area that I hope to see improved in UE5.
This man will be mocked because he is giving his honest thoughts, I've seen some dude trash talking on Twitter on him because he loved ratchet and clank trailer but said Dirt 5 looked like mobile game on serie X 😅.
@@adamjjohnsen I love Sony and would go for them anytime, but I also have a nostalgic feel for Halo, and want to play it, and i want Xbox to have good games and impressive ones, even if i might not play them. but going into twitter makes me realise i'm in the minority who just appreciate technology, outside of teh console war, especially a war that's built on lies, incomprehension and fanboyism culture.
Which settings in the PS5 did you choose? I must say that the 5 settings of differently pitched noise arent very helpful to me. I don't know which "sounds closest to ear level".
Demon's Souls was great, too! It made fantastical use of the 3D audio and the controller's vibrations and its graphics were phenomenal! The enemies' mechanics were a bit outdated every once in a while but that's because they didn't change their code for the remake to stay true to the original.
Looking forward to Deathloop! The trailers for the game during and after the PS5 reveal have me hooked! Kena: Bridge of Spirits & It Takes Two are also on my wish list. ☺️
@@ElderStatesman I just finished It Takes Two with my partner today. OMG, it's incredible, it really surpassed my expectations. And now that Returnal is out, it looks amazing, I want to get it more than Deathloop tbh.
Ghost Of Tsushima is worth buying to play on PS5. It's a late gen PS4 Sony game, but looks like next gen and has had its 60 fps boost for PS5. I think you were impressed when you reacted to the gameplay. Also God of War, again 60fps, and had a res boost. In terms of 'PS5' native games, there aren't many yet, but Returnal & Demon's Souls (both out now). And then later in June you have Ratchet & Clank. Resident Evil Village would be worth investigating, although it's multi-platform, and not made with only PS5 in mind unlike say Returnal.
You might want to load up some classic Housemarque games on your new PS5 - Resogun and Nex Machina, in particular - preferably on a big HDR screen. You can see their infatuation with flashy particle effects and fast paced arcade action. And then give an extended look at Returnal to see how they have evolved while still carrying that arcade DNA.
Returnal *feels* incredibly good while playing, the adaptive triggers are featured well, the ambiance and environments are spot on. Part of its greatest strength is that everything that happens fits perfectly inside the narrative, death included. It is not on the absolute bleeding edge of visuals, but it's novel, addictive and handles impressively.
Fascinating as always. Thanks for taking the time out from your busy life to give your thoughts on this. You're right about the cut scenes (30fps) and gameplay (60fps) of course
That's a good point about FPS tallies. Much more room to play with if you double the frame time for cinematics. They've certainly taken that extra room to make some gorgeous cut-scenes though (and imo the gameplay visuals also looks excellent)
Always really interesting to hear/see you breakdown games. I am no developer or artist so hearing your praise and critique is awesome. Many times you point out things I and many other would never notice, it gives me a different perspective and appreciation for the games I play.
Cherno thanks so much for making these videos, your opinions and commentary are super interesting to hear, you catch/notice things I never paid attention to. Keep it up buddy, thanks!
I didn't watch this when you uploaded because I hadn't played it yet, but since beating it, it's wild to see how different some of the effects and enemy designs were in the final release. The explosion effect you said was underwhelming was definitely so in this trailer, but in the game not only is that enemy vastly different, but it doesn't make the ground "shake" at all. Interesting to see how much some of these things change in development.
“Returnal” is built on a decades-old structure named “Roguelike,” wherein rooms and levels are procedurally-generated differently every time you play it. Every time Selene dies, she wakes up back at that crash site, which remains mostly the same each time. All progress, all found items, all weapons-gone.
this is one of the most immersive games i ve ever played, and i played a lot since 1985. Sound with 3d headphones and the gameplay speed is brutal. if you are not concentrated for one sec it can be over. Absolutely love it
Gameplay/cutscene/whatever, just seeing someone who knows what they're talking about and being enthusiastic about the work others have done and breaking down why they like it is very compelling to me. When you find things to critique that's fine too tough because it's done from a place of genuine consideration. It's never malicious, just your honest impressions.
Good that you are posting more videos here Cherno. As a suggestion, it would be nice if you make deeper analysis like Digital Foundry, giving more and deep information
I'd definitely recommend checking out Miles Morales. I know you liked the trailer for it, but it's just a good and smooth game to boot. Insomniac never disappoint me.
I kind of wish there were post fxs were I can simulate how a eyes actually work vs simulating what a camera does. Because eyes actually do different things compared to what a camera does. When you look at a light source directly it will burn a image of the light in you optical receptors but a camera doesn't have this problem. Also when a you close your eye lids light does pass your eye lids and subsurface scatters the light though the skin layer of your eye lids creating a color hue. Also there are no lens flares when it comes to eyes either also motion blur is there sort of. These type of effects would fps games more realistic in many ways.
The game is a story based shoot em up with horror elements and rogue-like generated worlds. It does look beautiful, but maybe not the type of game meant to look around in wonder all the time, as everything is trying to kill you :)
Congratulations for managing to buy a PS5. I bought my a few days ago. Hopefully our consoles gets to us fastest way possible. I am a senior Computer Engineering student. I have been watching almost every videos about the technical side of the next gen consoles and the games in internet. I started my gaming journey with Crash Bandicoot when i was 6. I have been in to games since then. I am studying game development and the hardware side of things. Your videos have been very helpful for me. I managed to understand the complexity of games and how little details effect us who looks games in a different perspective etc. Also your goal to make a game engine that you want inspired us and coding videos have been very helpful. Thank you for starting this channel. Keep up the good work Cherno. You are very good at what you do.
I would love to see you Cherno do some gameplay and gameplay analysis... that would be something I would be interested in seeing. Something more in depth than anyone's putting out there would be a breath of fresh air
I honestly appreciate and love watching your videos, because you are 100% genuine, I am Software Engineering student and I love the way you break down game graphics from a technical perspective yet still not making it to technical for those who have no experience in game development , I look forward to seeing how you expand this sort of content in the future :) just remember to always stay true to your opinions and beliefs and don't feel pressured by any fandoms to sugar coat your opinions.
Congratz on (probably) ordering a PS5! :D If you get PS Plus, you will get access to the instant game collection which contains pretty much all the best PS4 games like God of War, Uncharted 1-4, Bloodborne, The Ratchet & Clank Remake, etc.
What this Game makes so interesting is, that its a Rouge like and Horror Story Game. Kinda new. Never really had something like that before. Maybe some Indies but this is already more like an AAA Game. Or AA. There are 2D and Top Down Rogue Like Games. But 3D with Horror... i at least am interested.
Oh and its procedural Generated as far as i know. (Some Areas are at least. So thats maybe why some Things might not be THAT Great. I think its still pretty ok for an Indie Game)
Another great reaction video! I've been a broken record about this but since I think it would be right up your alley, I can't stop asking for it... Please react to Death Stranding on PS4 Pro. It's using the same engine as Horizon Zero Dawn but it looks amazing! I know it's a "last gen" game but would love to see you react to it. Be safe and healthy!
He will decimate it I think. I like this channel, but he seems incapable of separating cut scenes graphics analysis from gameplay graphics analysis. In this game, some cut scenes seem to focus on foto realism, whereas the gameplay does not. It's an deliberate artistic choice.
The most important thing to know about Housemarque is, that they previously only made arcade like games. This is their first full priced, completely 3D game. So Id guess the in game graphics are a bit turned down because of the arcady nature of the gameplay and these 1000s of things going on, on screen at the same time. Im very excited for the game tomorrow 😁. Oh and of course you should check out “Miles Morales” and “Demons Souls”.
I think the game looks phenomenal. Remember this is a AA studio given a big budget, they've done nothing like this before. Plus they're going for a certai style as well so I'm very impressed with it
The downgrade I think is understandable, the gameplay footage has so much going on in every scene that I can't imagine they could match the cutscenes. But then again ratchet seems to be managing it!
Returnal is running at 60 fps in gameplay while the cinematics are running at 30, Rachet as portrayed in the trailers is running at 30 fps on both gameplay and cinematics so its easier to match the visuals. Though to be fair Returnal in gameplay still looks amazing and nextgen, it just means its cutscenes are that good. 😀
@@03chrisv that's true. It'll be interesting to see what ratchet and clanks 60fps mode is like. if miles Morales is anything to go by, I think they'll manage to keep 95% of the quality
R&C is a different art style. I'm not even certain what improvements they'd make if they were to do so in cinematics, either. I understand that Returnal's cinematics are a pretty decent step up from the game assets - especially in the camera effects, but it's not like the game visuals are lacking imo. This is one of the better looking titles I've seen. Then again, it is a typically "Housemarque" visual style (reminiscent of their dual-stick bullet hell games), a nice blend of "realistic" and arcade-y shooter I was a little surprised at Cherno's take of the game's visuals though haha
I would like to see some hands on gameplay reactions. I'd like to see your reaction to Astros Playroom and and Returnal looking at designing for this next gen ps5 features the dual sense controllers haptic feedback, adaptive triggers and the 3d audio.
Congrats on getting the ps5 ! I got mine a few months ago, the worst part about it is there isn’t really a ton of games to play on it yet ! Ratchet and clank is a must for sure, that’s what I’m most looking forward to.
The game is 4k 60fps and has ray-tracing in it. This is also Housemarque's first AAA-game, so really impressed with what they have done and going by reviews, it's on 86 right now (metacritic), so I hope I get the game tomorrow. Looking forward to see actual gameplay when u get your PS5. :)
Would enjoy seeing you review games, you look with an artist's eye which is kinda unique and enjoyable. Would be nice to get away from the fps and pixel count snobbery that is so prevalent.
I think in trying to bridge the more close-up and intimate cutscene shots with the gameplay, which is much more of a zoomed out "bullet hell" type of camera (that in itself looks awesome in moment to moment gameplay) does not really do the game any favours. Imagine trying to sell a sim city game from the POV if an individual npc at street level. A bit of an exaggeration, sure! Yet there is a lot to learn from this from a trailer perspective and asking yourself what kind of game you are trying to get people excited about.
I was lucky to order a PS5 on a Best Buy restock back in January. The games are pretty amazing (as I've been stuck in the Xbox ecosystem for years)! I'd start with a few that I've either played or plan to own: - Control - Astro's Playroom - The Last of Us: Part II (to see the immense detail of the environments on a PS5) - Deathloop You should definitely pick up Returnal as well! Some people are really psyched about Spider Man: Miles Morales too.
Yo cherno there is a new lengthy ratchet and clank gameplay demo, the difference between cinematics and gameplay are almost unnoticeable compared to returnal, I was blown away
Thanks for the video Cherno. I do see it too with the graphical difference between the cut scenes and the gameplay. There usually is with games but this one is quite noticeable in places. But still, my copy should arrive today. Can’t wait to play it after work. The story does intrigue me too. Very much so, and it is a good looking game. I hope you manage to get yourself PS5 next week and would love to see you put up some gameplay videos. That would be cool. Love seeing your game trailer breakdowns too. And I recommend you play Miles Morales on PS5. It looks and plays beautifully. And yes it’s an Insomniac game. They are on top of their game. Ratchet and Clank can’t come soon enough! All the best and look forward to your next video Cherno.
This is a weird, weird launch trailer, in that it completely avoids mentioning the actual gameplay hook. Returnal is a roguelite, meaning that a lot of random generation is going on with the level designs, and it’s also a bullet hell running at a near-flawless 4K60 with RT. Considering those aspects, the less-visually impressive gameplay makes more sense when compared to something more linear like R&C, though both games should be really, really incredible.
Hi. I always like to catch your videos. You offer something different to 99% of other game related uploads. As for Returnal. I've played a few hours. There is a difference between cinematics and gameplay but the gameplay is 60fps and without playing you won't feel the incredible atmosphere of the environment...especially as rooms and areas are random with each death. When you die, you return and start again at your ship...slowly unlocking things to help ....so its bloody hard...but you do progress with each death...Weapons, enemies ,pick ups are all randomised with each death...its quite unique... The visuals in gameplay are impressive...especially the particles and lighting....and the attention to detail in the environment. Sound is awesome and the bullet hell style shooting gameplay is incredibly good...its something Housemarque are known for....An indie studio who have made there first AAA game... I was unsure about the gameplay of Returnal before its launch but since getting and playing a few hours...its a very fresh and impressive game...but its not easy...and without planning and perseverance it may put some folk off?.
If you can get your hands on a PS5 soon I would love to see about a reaction video to the pre-installed Astro Bot game. Most likely this is a demonstration of the dual sense controller. Would like to know what you - as a game engine dev - think about the usage of the controller. From a presentation point of view you might want to take look at Spider-Man: Miles-Morales and Demons Souls (the later one is VERY hard). Visually they are the two most impressive games so far (TLOU2 and GoW are always worth a look but are last gen only, despite the GoW PS5 patch). I guess until Ratchet & Clank comes out, MM and DS are the most impressive ones ;)
Check out Demon's Souls, Spider-Man Miles Morales, God of War(it's a PS4 that you can now play at 4K60), The Last of Us Part 2(no PS5 version yet), Uncharted 4(no PS5 version yet), Ghost of Tsushima(1800p60fps PS5 patch available). ALL of these games are worth playing and they all look great even if some of them are PS4 titles!
I don't think that Returnal is going to win any awards for graphics. They're clean and fitting, but not incredible. I could see this game being run on a PS4 with lower resolution, frame-rate, etc, and longer loading times. But Housemarque is known for top-tier (and I mean top-tier) gameplay. Because of this, with a decent story, world, and characters, this could be in the running for game of the year, and a sleeper-hit for the PS5. As good as R&C looks, and as much as I love R&C (and trust me, I do), I'm looking forward to Returnal at least as much.
List of PS5 ONLY games 1. Astro bot for the dual sense controller. Also because it's pre-installed with every PS5 2. Demon's Souls for the grafix Some cool PS4 games if you haven't played it yet. Ghost of Tsushima and God of War
I'm a couple days in and I love (and hate it) more each day. It's extremely satisfying to finally make it click and you're gonna die tons of times until you get the hang of it I came to the second boss and died. Boom, back to square one! The guns and upgrades are really good and the story is surprisingly good. But one of the most impressive aspects is the atmosphere. I'm a sci-fi nerd and their influences are very transparent, but I simply LOVE waking around in a hostile world uncovering a mystery bit by bit. Id suggest turning the darkness down. It really helped with the mood. Can't wait to get back to this game after work today.
@@theuniversewithin2065 i agree, i LOVE it but it's very difficult, struggling AF getting through biome 3, mainly the drones and the traps at the end. It's unforgiving, but you learn how ro faster gear up in first biome before going back to trying the 3, hearing the boss in the 3 makes he biome seem easy, can't even imagine that to be possible
@@jonascelentano9251 didn't want to spoil the resurrection device in case you hadn't played further than me, but it's good to know that dying on the second boss at least won't pull you directly back to biome 1. I came back after dying the first time at the second boss and had full health and very good upgrades, but saw a door behind a laser lava floor that had very good items behind them. Discovered yet another door on my way back to the second boss and of course I died and woke up by the ship 😂. Love how deep the upgrades and guns are. Some of the guns are fun as hell. The most impressive thing about playing this game is the DualSense. It's amazing to feel how detailed and nuanced the rumble is. After a while you sort of forget you're holding a controller and can really feel the environment and your actions through the controller.
@@theuniversewithin2065 yeah i agree the whole game is a masterpiece, from the 3d audio too the dualsense, i don't usually like these games but this is definitely different. Prefect balance. Have you done the 3 biome? Any tips ? Do you get the fast travel to the boss in the 3 like you did in the second? The goddamn drones and traps are killing me (literally). I read people complain about the graphics, i really don't get it, i think it looks beautiful on my oled tv, and the frame rate is flawless, haven't noticed any drops actually, even if it's not the absolute best graphics, it's very good, atleast nothing too complain about
@@jonascelentano9251 housemarque never disappoints, although a story driven narrative never was their strongest suit. But with this they really stepped it up. Haven't even reached #3. I'm back to 1 after dying yesterday. I think it looks really good, but the GFX aren't groundbreaking. It's the total package and the fluidity of the gameplay that is amazing. I have a 1 year old Sony TV, though I wish I got an OLED just for this. The contrast is really awesome. I turned the darkness way down. I love how creepy and atmospheric it is. Can't wait to get to #3 just to see what it is. Avoided any videos because I want to maintain the mystery.
Astrobot for sure Returnal looks incredible for a game made by a smallish studio. Don't think it's fair to compare Ratchet and Clank with the mighty insomniac studio behind it. They must have over 200 employees

@@adamjjohnsen I love Sony and would go for them anytime, but I also have a nostalgic feel for Halo, and want to play it, and i want Xbox to have good games and impressive ones, even if i might not play them. but going into twitter makes me realise i'm in the minority who just appreciate technology, outside of teh console war, especially a war that's built on lies, incomprehension and fanboyism culture.
the 3d audio in this game is beyond good, you will be blown away when you get a ps5 and try this game
As is the haptics and adaptive triggers.
Which settings in the PS5 did you choose? I must say that the 5 settings of differently pitched noise arent very helpful to me. I don't know which "sounds closest to ear level".
@@franzusgutlus54 i also find that waterfall sound preview basically useless, i sticked with the default
@@franzusgutlus54
Do you have 3D audio compatible headphones?
Perhaps the official stuff.
@@GameslordXY I have the Sony 3D Pulse
For this year so far, I think those are the most interesting ones:
Spiderman Miles Morales
Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart
Kena: Bridge of Spirits
Demon's Souls was great, too! It made fantastical use of the 3D audio and the controller's vibrations and its graphics were phenomenal! The enemies' mechanics were a bit outdated every once in a while but that's because they didn't change their code for the remake to stay true to the original.
I loved Sackboy too. Oh, and It Takes Two is a must play.
So glad you are posting here again!!! 🙌🏻
Indie developer with a big budget. That’s very impressive for their first AAA game. 🤘🏻
@@MrVelociraptor75 yeah, I agree, it looks gorgeous imo
Not everything.
Some important stuff remain.
Story critical upgrades remain if I am not mistaken.
It’s actually a Rogue like Arcady spooky, 3rd person shooter
this is one of the most immersive games i ve ever played, and i played a lot since 1985. Sound with 3d headphones and the gameplay speed is brutal. if you are not concentrated for one sec it can be over. Absolutely love it
You should really play returnal. Don't judge it by the visuals, trust me it plays smooth and the story is great so far...haven't finished it.
Always wanted to work for Housemarque :)
Especially the 60fps RT on -mode...That alone is impressive for a launch game.
This is the only channel where I like when the video is paused again and again! You don't even have to apologize Cherno 😌👌
No one is annoyed by you going slow. That's why we're all here
Masterpiece incoming 🔥
Wouldn’t say that we still got god of war already won game of year not even out yet
@@danny.4506 what does GOW have to do with Returnal being a masterpiece? 😒
The game is a story based shoot em up with horror elements and rogue-like generated worlds. It does look beautiful, but maybe not the type of game meant to look around in wonder all the time, as everything is trying to kill you :)
Dude don’t think you bore us with the frame by frame stuff. The fact that you do that is the exact reason I love your videos
So happy more cherno is back!
I would love to see you Cherno do some gameplay and gameplay analysis... that would be something I would be interested in seeing. Something more in depth than anyone's putting out there would be a breath of fresh air
Cutscenes are pre-rendered at 30fps. It's a small team, we can't expect every game can look like R&C Rift Apart.
YOU DID IT!! Congratulations!!
Returnal
I honestly appreciate and love watching your videos, because you are 100% genuine, I am Software Engineering student and I love the way you break down game graphics from a technical perspective yet still not making it to technical for those who have no experience in game development , I look forward to seeing how you expand this sort of content in the future :) just remember to always stay true to your opinions and beliefs and don't feel pressured by any fandoms to sugar coat your opinions.
Was about to suggest for you to react to returnal!!
Congratz on (probably) ordering a PS5! :D
If you get PS Plus, you will get access to the instant game collection which contains pretty much all the best PS4 games like God of War, Uncharted 1-4, Bloodborne, The Ratchet & Clank Remake, etc.
good advice. There's also a slew of games Sony have given out for free to everyone, not just PS+ subs (like Horizon, I believe)
I do agree what cherno is saying about graphics in gameplay but tbh i'm always running away from enemies especially at 8:32 . This game is tough
Plus they're going for a certai style as well so I'm very impressed with it
As a developer you should know that you can look frame by frame on UA-cam with the dot and comma button
Then again, it is a typically "Housemarque" visual style (reminiscent of their dual-stick bullet hell games), a nice blend of "realistic" and arcade-y shooter
I was a little surprised at Cherno's take of the game's visuals though haha
I would like to see some hands on gameplay reactions. I'd like to see your reaction to Astros Playroom and and Returnal looking at designing for this next gen ps5 features the dual sense controllers haptic feedback, adaptive triggers and the 3d audio.
"Nobody tells me what to do!" and you've earned my like ... :-D I like the way you show your appreciation.
Congrats on getting the ps5 ! I got mine a few months ago, the worst part about it is there isn’t really a ton of games to play on it yet ! Ratchet and clank is a must for sure, that’s what I’m most looking forward to.
This game is getting 10s, 9s, and 8s, this is probably the biggest sleeper of 2021, and people are loving it!
Reviews about to drop in 3. 2. 1.
Congrats on the PS5! Looking forward to your next video!
Cutscenes btw are pre rendered
I'd start with a few that I've either played or plan to own:
- Control
- Astro's Playroom
- The Last of Us: Part II (to see the immense detail of the environments on a PS5)
- Deathloop
You should definitely pick up Returnal as well! Some people are really psyched about Spider Man: Miles Morales too.
Definitely interested in some gameplay analysis from your perspective. 100% would watch
You have to experience Demon's Souls if you will get a PS5! ;) Returnal looks very promising as well!
You need to check out Demon's Souls on the PS5 before anything else. It has next gen geometry and textures at least.
Very well said. I knew he was starting in the wrong direction as soon as he said "this is a horror game" lol
As a Finn & Huge Playstation fan i'm really happy how this game look's! Good job Housemarque! Can't wait to play this game!!!
I would really enjoy your reaction to the ps4 game dreams (which is also playable and enhanced on ps5).
Interested in your feedback on the PS5 IO loading times. Miles Morales's spiderman plus other ps5 games that utilizes the SSD.
Demon’s Souls is a 1000% MUST PLAY!!! It has the greatest graphics of any game I’ve ever played. Period!
Big yes to game analysis. Would like to see you play resi village which releases on 7th.
List of PS5 ONLY games
1. Astro bot for the dual sense controller. Also because it's pre-installed with every PS5
2. Demon's Souls for the grafix
Some cool PS4 games if you haven't played it yet.

The brass thingy is the hinge for the cover and do not even play the piano ;)
For a 60fps gameplay/bullet-hell Title I can't Knock it too much for some weaker aspects of the image, looks pretty good and gameplay carries
Astrobot for sure
Returnal looks incredible for a game made by a smallish studio. Don't think it's fair to compare Ratchet and Clank with the mighty insomniac studio behind it. They must have over 200 employees
My suggestion is look up on it more but also a game is better understood once you have the game in hand
I just finished this game and it's mind-blowing I'm pretty sure it's gonna win the award as the best game of the Year 2021 there are no other games coming out better than this.
Demon's souls, Sackboys Big Adventure and (Astros playroom, pre installed) . They are absolutely next level games that show only a glimpse of what gaming will become. I also recommend Days gone upgraded for PS5.
We have to remember that Housemarque is still a smallish studio compared to other first party studios.

Hey cherno after you do your video do you go back and just watch the trailer all the way through? I feel like because you pause and talk about the detail of the visuals so much that you miss like the feel of the combat or the way the game plays or something.
