  • Concrete is vital for protecting our coastlines - but it comes at a huge environmental cost. An Israeli startup has found a way to make concrete sea defences that get stronger over time, while encouraging life to thrive.

      well we got the money to pay for research like this from the drilling.... Oil a real important economic booster for countries who pay for expensive (and not really needed) eco-friendly research.

    • @vineethvish11
      @vineethvish11 5 років тому +15

      @@just_some1575 it's a "tech startup", so I really don't understand your association with oil company. Secondly the research of ice sheet metling was conducted by the team of Danish scientists (75.2% of Denmark's GDP is service, not oil).
      European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts further confirmed the impact of ice sheet melting over the world's climate. Again this Institute is funded by countries whose main source isn't oil.
      So your argument is redundant. Don't be so naive and vague. Idk where you're from but where I live climate has majorly been affected. Constant floods, heavy rainfall; because of the greed of few humans others are suffering consequences. And this isn't fair at all.

I tell people about the tech. People like the tech. When I tell people about Vertical Farming, they're fascinated about it and they like it because of the benefits it has. We have to start marketing green tech as a personal benefit, not as an immediate solution to an immediate threat. I'm sure they can convince more companies to care by providing them benefits as opposed to trying to gaslight them into buying their product to save the planet.

    So do these things actually serve as a sea defense or not - look at the size of the armour rock/concrete uniuts they're placing it next too... Probably alright in low energy wave climates but no match for conventional units in actually protecting coastlines.

      UmanKumar Kakal so I'm going to go in depth with Brexit rather than answer both. At first, I'd rather answer one well than two shitty, and my reason for hating trump is clear as day.
      So Brexit. We're going for no deal Brexit yes? This is inarguable unless Johnson goes and wee get an extension. The EU cannot legally negotiate the withdrawal agreement (it was explicitly stated in the extension, the time is only for parliament to sort themselves out.
      No deal Brexit means WTO guidelines. And no favoured nation, so we HAVE to give equal tariffs to every country unless we have an explicit trade deal for the next ten years (GATT article 24, paragraph 5C). So, let's assume we have almost no tariffs, we keep tariffs low for every single country. Our country will be FLOODED with foreign competition which will drive our agriculture, steel, financial sector, manufacturing, engineering all out of business, create mass unemployment, no independency, and we will likely end up like Africa, no fucking Joke, But no one is planning this. What will happen is we will have somewhat high tariffs to protect our industries. When we have high tariffs, we will also have equal tariffs slapped onto us by our trade partners. So, without the single market, our exports will become way less competitive and will fall. Farmers and manufacturers who sell up to 90% of their goods to the EU will see a stark fall in exports. Will almost definitely go out of business. The rescue package is laughably small, it is literally 5% what is expected to be lost. On top of the lack of competitiveness, we import many, many factors of production from Germany, France, USA, china, etc. That are going to drastically rise in price. Causing a rise in costs, causing massive cost-push inflation as well as making our imports way less competitive, and due to the amount we import, will drastically make our exports way less competitive. On top of the 25% depreciation expected by everyone, including brexiteer MPs. This is a fact, the pound dropped 20% after just the referendum. And that will do the sa,e thing that tariffs did to our costs of production and inflation. I emphasise, this will cripple our economy. British steel went bankrupt, so far 240k business are already lost to Brexit and up to a million are expected when Toyota and other firms (who announced they're leaving) finally leave within a year or two. This is before we've left. The young (24 or less) voted 75% to remain. They fucking love the EU, they WILL leave the UK - cause a brain drain, like what happened in Greece. We will have mass unemployment, a HEAVY recession and no debt relief like Greece had. Oh but we have heavy debt and virtually no interest rates - our fiscal and monetary policies are constrained. We cannot increase spending and we can't manipulate our currency to escape the recession. We will likely cause a FUCKING depression, the last one was caused by protectionism nowhere near as bad as this in times where trade wasn't nearly as important, and when they COULD use fiscal and monetary action to escape a recession. We will end up like Greece but with no debt relief and harsh trade barriers.
      This is all before we get to the fact that trump has vetoed every single option for WTO judge (so we are literally down to one enforcing the trade laws). Likely in preparation for Brexit, so now we will likely suffer illegal tariffs and sanctions from the US so we do want they want - like they've done with Iran. Oh and the fact we won't have the EU enforcing tax loophole, evasion and transparency laws (which make the UK the most financially secret country in the world) in January 2019, announced early 2016. A withdrawal agreement makes us subject to these laws. Now it makes sense why literally EVERY no deal Brexiteer has strong links to investment banking - Farage (has a hedge fund), Rees Mogg (has a hedge fund), Javid (is an investment banker), Raab (literally caught getting money paid by hedge funds from tax havens). It goes on, the ONLY exception so far is Johnson. And name a single policy he implemented in London that was a success. Just ONE.
      And in case you think we will get a trade deal, it took Canada 12, 12 and so far 8 (will go up to 12) years to sort trade deals with the USA, ASEAN and EU. It took Japan 10 years to get a trade deal with the EU and S. America a beautiful 20 years to get a trade deal with the EU. This stuff cannot be done within months. On top of that, if we somehow sorted one of our trade deals within a month, every month, it would take 58 years to get the deals we currently have. Which won't fucking happen, clearly. If you think America will have a trade deal, they won't. Trump is directly contradicting the Senates giving us terms that are physically impossible to meet. Trump will only deal with us if we destroy EU terms, let Americans use the NHS, import goods that don't meet EU standards and we have NO DEAL Brexit. In other words, we destroy trade relations, economically weaken ourselves and become solely dependent on the USA to give them incredible leverage and control over us. But that wasn't the point I was making. The point is that the Senators have said they will block EVERY deal with the US if we remove the backstop. The ONLY way we have the backstop and keep the peace in Northern Ireland is with a deal with the EU - the ONLY way. This directly contradicts Trump, we can't ever meet the senate and Presidents conditions. It's physically impossible.
      Now you may say this is a worthy sacrifice, but it answers literally none of the issues. The issues for people where mass migration, lack of NHS funding, lack of power over our own country. 20% of immigration is from the EU, and they're the highly skilled labour - leaving isn't going to reduce ANY of the migration from Africa or Pakistan, that's our choice. Oh, and India have said to get a trade deal, we will need open borders (where 2bn Indians live). The NHS funding - we are going to lose so much from the recession and unemployment, on top of the divorce payment and the fact we only gave 7bn away to the EU, we are estimated to lose a minimum of £100bn. I think that is nowhere near enough. I estimate 250bn. 10% our GDP. Furthermore, we will be weaker by every measure economically, how will we EVER have any sort of say globally now? We will be desperate and every country can see why, we will have no say in what happens in the biggest trade bloc that ever existed - like we used to. Brexit will exasperate ALL of our problems. Migration, lack of funding, lack of control. All exasperated in every way.
      And if you think "project fear". I'm an economist, this type of thing is literally what I have a job for. It's also the unanimous opinion of 99% of economists. This WILL happen. The effects will also be immediate, even the Torys are terrified of medicine and food shortages. This genuinely isn't up for debate, any other opinion on this is factually wrong at every possible level.
