@@BentleyPascoe Sorry I meant how does he get the water into the trays? I loved how he has his trays for the system but didn't really learn a ton else. Air is from the central air system he has in his fish room but what about getting water up into the trays? I think he mentioned he used a circulation pump to agitate the bottom of the 20 long so no debris settles and gives the sponge filter a chance to pick it up. Does he use another circulation pump to add water to the trays? I believe he has water going into each individual tray as opposed to having it flow through each of them in a line.

Great video! I used an adaptation of this system for about 6 months, but eventually got tired of trying to keep the tray screens clean and overflowing them. Goldfish fry just seem to require more feeding than the trays allow

My one related question is: how do people with 8-5 jobs manage the food supply for fry, when the fry are at their most fragile early stages?
Depending on the size of the fry, this is where some of the better live foods come into play - vinegar eels for example stay in the water column and are very tiny, so you have a little extra in the water and the fry can feed on them throughout the day. Other examples like paramecium and infusoria cultures also work well, unfortunately unless the fry are larger by nature its hard to apply this to powder/flake type foods as auto feeders dose a lot more than you typically want for a group of fry.

In the 90's, I raised Livebearer fry in plastic canvas boxes, styro-edges to float.

Great video! I use the same zebra fish tanks LRB Aquatics uses. That allows multiple racks above the sump. You could do the same with Deans system. Just change the slot to pvc bunghole and pipe the return to the sump allowing vertical expansion. Combining this and LRB’s gives you the best of both. I will for sure be stealing the zip tie hard line air system though. Deans will maintain closer temp tolerance for sensitive species. Again great video!
Yep, Dean and I shortly mention that system. We've actually discussed it at length a few times with the biggest concern being keeping them clean. As I recall Lucas had some diatom issues in them, but I will say its a really good system if you need maximum density. Gary has some augmentations to it in Lucas' recent visit which are very smart that I like quite a bit. Both systems are good, I just personally see a few more benefits in Dean's system that make me love it as much as I do, especially for rainbows.
I have not had those issues but have not tried putting lights so close. Mine also has never been over 10 trays with a 29 gallon sump. I used plastic tubbing for the returns as well so there is no standing water in the system. It works really well for trying Guppy variations and selective breeding. But I don’t keep them in longer than about a month before going to a grow out tank. In my larger 5 gallon fry tanks they may stay longer. Those I use a pvc (siphon) overflow and so far so good. I’m sure with more time and practice it will tune in nicely. I worry about clogging and overflows stopping but using Aquaclear sponges they have done well. But alas if I had the room Deans is sweet. I just have to stay more compact as I rent and can’t devote the space I would like too. Thanks again for information it will for sure improve what I have going!

Honestly I think the best bet there is Preston John. He's been so successful, it's likely the best source of info in the US. Over time I might get to do more with Dean, we shall see. Cory kinda has priority on a lot of that content.

I signed up asap hoping for possible shipping in the spring when the little guys and girls have some size to them. I geek out at the thought of keeping and breeding Schoutedeni puffers like you do to rainbowfish. Just wish there was a video of someone who was 100% confident in their pronunciation of "Schoutedeni." Lol
@~27:00 Even if you used a 40 breeder that was deeper, bracing could be used on the top of the tank to adjust the depth at the surface of the water at the top of the tank, so that those trays would still fit the same way.

Considering the constant drip there's likely almost no need to clean, just the sponge when he moves the batch of fish. Careful feeding is key here, but you can also use a small pipette to suck out detritus

Awesome system, love dean, and love that the link for the trays was shared. May seem like a silly question but I'm still learning, is the tank its self actually used for fish too or is it just water change volume for the trays.

I have something similar. I used nylon nuts and "bolts" that I was able to pick up at my local Ace Hardware store.

I like using those guppy breeding nets for keeping fry in a similar way, if you have some peppered cories or similar in the main tank they come up to the net and suck uneaten food right through the net.

Hi! Love your videos. So, you use coffee filters in your small, fry boxes to hatch eggs so that you can insert a bubbler and get some serious tumbling going on, I assume? Then, once the eggs hatch, you turn them loose into the box?
It depends on the eggs. Not all eggs do well under heavy tumbling. Mostly that's just cories and plecos.
You get a sub just for this.
Tell Dean if he wants to make breeding dishes he could get plexiglas, a form and a heat gun. Cut the plexiglas to the right size and lay it in the form then heat it until it forms around the form. Then he could spray paint it. Then he can get it the size he wants it.
This is an amazing video! I went to the Container Store and picked up some of those containers for my setup. My question is how did he cut the holes in the plastic where the sponge goes?

Most likely a dremel. The right router would work too if you were careful.
I taped off the area that I wanted to cut out, then drilled a hole at each end of the slot, then like others said, I used a dremel to cut in between. Cleaned it all up with a fingernail sanding stick.
I see Jemco as been sold out of the water valves any where they can be bought ?
I've been trying to source an alternative with little luck.
Also... sorry I'm asking so many questions! But, how do you collect your Ram eggs? My mated pair, in a 29g, lay on rocks and before I notice, they've moved them and buried them in a little pit! I tried gathering the free-swimming fry with a turkey baster, but they did not survive in my fry box (and I can work on that). But I'd like to see my Ram parents raise their fry in their tank. It's just hard to get the food to them in such a large tank (live baby brine shrimp, some fry food from Aquarium Co-op, infusoria from catappa leaves already in the tank).
He just has a lot of flat surfaces that he uses and as soon as he sees eggs he pulls them out and then puts a new flat stone in.
when using the coffee filters does he put the air bubbler inside the coffee filter with the eggs? or just in the box next to coffee filter?

What kind of paint was used that was alright to submerge? I'm familiar with painting a lot of things, but I've never sprayed tubs to drop into water.

Personally, I like to let fish spawn in a tank and then move them out so that the fry have an established tank to graze on. I find that rainbow and tetra fry are much less sensitive when they are in an established tank rather than a small container.
What works best for you should always come first, but often when breeding for taw volume, moving the parents often can be very stressful. If you do it only a few times a year, it's no problem!
Could you have daphnea and plants in the base tank? Pros/Cons?
Fertilizer and light requirements could cause issues for the babies in the trays, otherwise I think it's ok
How do you get the eggs out of the tanks and how do you transfer eggs and fry?
Eggs are either I. Spawning mops or on surfaces, depends on species. They're moved as eggs or carefully with a turkey baster as hatchlings
hi there , how do you move the fry from the breeding tank and put them into the breeding trays??
This is used normally with egg layers, so the eggs are moved to trays, hatched then raised until a certain size depending in fish, then moved from trays to grow out tanks.
What shelving unit is this? Need to find a good rack for 40 breeders and 2 20 longs. How does water get circulated into the fry trays?

He feeds very careful amounts, so there is not enough left overs for hydra to form
You could use a Frag tank for your fry.

Fry trays 20L, meth blue is a small container, about a gallon as I recall

Anther question: I have used Seachem ParaGuard when hatching eggs, somewhat successfully, but you use methylene blue until wiggling stage. Do you really do only a 50% water change when they wiggle, leaving some of the blue in? I've been afraid that any methylene blue would kill wigglers. Also, I've been experimenting with just catappa leaves in egg boxes, with extreme bubbling agitation, and it has worked well with Cories. Less well with Bolivian Rams... Cories, in my experience, are very hardy little dudes.
The amount of methylene blue that Dean is using in his setup is so minimal we're talking like one to two drops in one of those large specimen containers so it's just enough to barely stay in the water.
@bentleypascoe So I have watched this several times in the past. I am doing a new breeding project with non-annual killifish. I am curious about the size of fry that could be used in this type of system, does it all come down to managing flow and very fine/high ppi sponge? Curious if you have any insight.
Dean has done discus, cories, rainbows, Rams, plecos, and a lot more, just get a fine sponge and be careful with flow
Bentley, the other day I was listening to a podcast about the misused words, "Awesome" and "Genius."
So the narrator gave the actual description for each word.
Dean certainly qualifies as someone with an idea that is genius, without a doubt. I am always impressed that Dean encourages others with his information and you care enough to help him share.
I don't think you talk over him as much as you are both different people and Dean is a bit soft spoken.

Well to be fair, I was born/grew up in an era where awesome took a different portion of the English vernacular. Is it textbook? No, but slang does that as our speech evolves. For certain, Dean is much more soft spoken than I am, the radio person in me just can't stay quiet forever - old habits die hard.

Typically you only need it post water changes, once a tank is established it should have a solid bacteria culture and you should no longer need it unless you did a really deep cleaning of your filter

They are made by InterDesign, the difference is these have the smooth corners in the bottoms.

It sounds like a rather extreme bacterial bloom. I would be doing a lot of testing of the water to see parameters and see if it's tied to spikes of any kind.

To say my testing kit is inadequate , would be the understatement of the year . i will take a sample of my water to my local store ASAP ..Can a bacterial bloom be harmful to my fish ? Its now 21 33 Sunday evening , all my fish seem fine , but will remain in the tank for atleast 10 hrs before the store opens , Is there anything you would do to try ensure their good health . i did do a 50%water change .THANKS

Containers are linked, that's a large specimen container for the eggs in methylene blue

What size watwr pump does he use to run water to trays
Dean has told me it's a much larger pump than needed. You would likely be just fine with a much smaller pump like something you'd use on a 3-5g tank. The more important part is having a great prefilter to the pump to remove particulates from the tubing.
I learnt I still have a ton of questions. It's a 20long right? I would like more of a breakdown I how the filtration is plumbed into that 20long.
I can answer some, there is the fine sponge on the intake of the pump and some other sponges down within. He then pushes from that pump up into the PVC which delivers the regulated stream of water into the trays using the valves. I will in the future do a full step by step build of this set up - look forward to it!
And yes, the tank is a 20L.
