    A great pen. Love that triple tine nib. I dragged mine out after many weeks of hibernation and it wrote well after a few flex exercises. Always use a Noodlers purple ink as I find it adds to the quality of the experience. A review I will save - thank you.

    Came here after the >. Pelly'Kan love fest you and Azizah did (I do what I'm told...got myself a BB for my M800 from your pal Rolf at missing-pen.de, hell of a guy!).
    Outstanding review and mirrors my experience with the pen. Can't believe you tossed a pen in the bin; do you mean metaphorically/nominally? You held back, a bit testy there methinks? And why not, sir? Heavens, get that man a reee-fund. No way a pen mfr should not replace or seller/dealer refund. As a user, feel the same about buying a vintage pen that proves an inkless waif, a stinker (unless its sold as parts pen or listed as defective). Caveat emptor has its limits. If in first month and after I do some amateur whispering the thing won't write, honor the transaction and keep me as a customer.
    Thank you for the integrity and positive energy of your reviews. You are a great friend to all of us ink-stained wretches.

    The new hair style and beard trim looks very professional. Good job. 👍
    I have quite a few pens and believe that I only have one Noodlers pen. Although, I have quite a few Noodlers inks. I would appreciate learning which of their inks damaged your pens so that I can avoid the same result. For that matter, I believe that a segment on inks that tend to damage or create pen problems would be very useful and appreciated.
    Keep up the good work.

    I recently got mine and am quite fond of this pen!
    Also, regarding eyedropping, Nathan Tardif recommends that one doesn't do it because of the problems it would cause at low capacity. The self-filler fills quite a large amount as it is.

    This is the only model of a Noodler's pen that I don't have. The 308 refillable cartridges are great. I have a package of 10 to be used if I can ever travel again. I am currently running one in my Neponset and another in one of my Ahabs and so far, they perform at least as good as the converter. I've been planning on getting a Triple Tail for a while now but have to wait until my pen budget recovers from my last purchase first. I have no doubts now that I will love it. Thanks for making the effort to acquire and then review this pen.

    I have been using Triple Tail for almost a year now and I came to the same conclusions as you did. At that time the price was a bit higher I think. I bought mine in Europe for almost €80.
    Yes, it writes nicely like a western and it flexes easily up to a or even with very little effort.
    On the down side, when flexed it puts on paper so much ink that Rhodia paper sometimes can't handle (I use Diamine inks), so you can imagine what happens with cheap copy paper !
    The other negative is that after a week or so the ink evaporates from the converter - better than Creaper, but still there.
    I didn't notice anything about the odour - may be the warm climate in southern Europe makes it go away quickly.
    All in all I like a lot this pen !
    Thank you for the very interesting review Stephen.

    I'm very tempted to get one of these. I write music notation and, while using a stub is better than a generic nib or a r*llerb*ll, I've been looking to try a proper music nib but cannot find any at a viable price point so far. I wouldn't expect the triple tail nib to behave exactly like a true music nib, but it would be an interesting exercise.

    Glad to hear you had a positive experience. I was hopeful, but just re-homed my fire hose. Without pressure, it was very wet, but usable. But that's not why I bought it. When flexed, even lightly, it simply dumped ink - regardless of ink characteristics. It could have been defective, but the cost of returning it or paying a restocking fee, was not worth it. Thankfully, the new owner is fine with the prodigious ink output. I'm enjoying my Creapers.

    I got some of the 308 cartridges to go with my ahab when they first came out thinking it would make the ahab a great back up pen. I filled one and slipped it into my bag when the time came I actually needed it all the moisture had left the cartridge. I was able to reconstitute the dye sludge that was left behind with some tap water, but I found it didn't work the way I had hoped that it would. I still like the idea but I think I would prefer it with a student material.

    I have a couple TT'S. One I bought at the the Boston open show from Nathan. I reworked the nib with one of those pink standing/polishing sticks to get more of an italic nib. It works well. The feed is cut very deep to allow ink to pool under the nib. Why keep ink in a reservoir when it's needed at the tines?
    IF YOU HEAT SET THE NIB WITH WATER JUST OFF THE BOIL, DON'T BRING THE HOT WATER UP INTO THE FILLING CHAMBER WITH THE FILLER PUMP. It will expand the plastic filler mechanism and the threads won't be tight. Just dunk the nib and grip section in the hot water. IF, you do have a pump filling thing where the threads don't tighten as you think they should, dip the filing section only in very hot (but not boiling) water and work the cylinder threads area smaller by the threads with your fingers. It actually worked for me. A tip I got from Nathan. His pens are really wet quite indestructible. Esp the material used in the fish pen. Nice review. Cheers, Dave

    Tripple Tail is an amazing pen with a completely different writing feel. Probably for the first time, out of the many pens that I have tried, this is something completely different - the combination of the incredible lightness of the ebonite pen itself and the incredible, amazing softness of the nib creates the impression that you are sliding on paper in zero gravity - after this pen, the feel of a usual pen is as if you were writing with a nail. At the same time, when you just start to write to her, and apply too much force, out of habit, she seems incredibly thick-writing, impractical, but when you get used to it a little, you seem to open up a new dimension in working with text - you can even write more bold for highlighting fragments of text.
    Unfortunately, there were some drawbacks - she writes sometimes unstably, it seems that she is very capricious with paper and ink (I have tried so far with only one, perhaps ink with lubricant will show itself better). There are problems with starting (the first moment after touching the pen with paper). The feed is clearly not geared towards feeding both ink channels for a long time - if you draw thick lines for a long time (which are done here without any effort), it starts to work much worse and the described problems are aggravated. It's also funny that, due to the double ink channel, the pen writes very clearly and stably with the back side - almost like a "normal" single-channel fountain pen.

    Agree about packaging... I don't want to have to store a bunch of packaging... I can understand packaging as large as an eyeglass case especially if you can store extra cartridges etc but anything larger is a rather ridiculous. The boxes as large as a large book registers as ludicrous 😂. Not practical in the least little bit... Unless your storing a life time supply of cartridges....

    Is that nib style the same as a music nib? I too really like my TT. About the smell - sort of like the cilantro story - some people like it others think it taste like soap. Twenty-three & Me says that this preference is predictable by one’s genome. Maybe this smell is the same way ..... lol. Price question/suspicion/annoyance? (Responding kinda to Richard T.) There's a lot new here as well as old favorite construction elements.
    I was surprised that Mr. Brown did not point out differences in nib design and feed shape from the Neponsets (and Ahabs). The nib is an experiment/departure for Noodlers in that it's narrower - proportionally - which I think makes the two sides of the whole nib move more freely. Shape (less shoulder) also affects that. Looking at the sides of this nib you see a clearly new shape.
    (My Creaper is a narrow little nib, though. I don't count that nib as a direct ancestor of this new product's nib. I'm comparing to the nib shape of the regular Noodlers #6 nibs and the shape/size of a Neponset nib.
    I have one of these and it's super wet. It is not as small a line - even with no pressure - as an Ahab. I *do* wish there was a crisper narrow line - when moving side-to-side for my grip.created by its tipping. I am considering buying another to experiment with changing that tip shape. Wish me luck! (I'll practice on some other nibs first, of course.)
    Speculating: These "Triple Tails" replace the Neponset. Have you noticed Neponset stocks are dwindling? So running a company, capitalization of whatever manufacture/assemble here he has to build out himself, margins, and funding forward research and experimentation - $55 is OK and $20 less than a Neponset. And you usually have to fight a Neponset to get it tuned to "run". (I have had several.)

    • @DavidLucas-hf1cx

      I think it’s the cellulose plastic. It has a tendency to off gas as it ages. I have 60 year old screwdrivers made from the stuff and you can still smell the slight odor up close. The upside, it’s a wood pulp product, tough, UV resistant, long lasting, can be recycled/burned and FDA approved. I think all these qualities go with Noodlers Mission statement.

    I bought this pen about a week ago. Skipped significantly out of the box, w regular pressure or when trying to flex. Took it apart, cleaned it, reassembled it then used a different ink, (Aurora Blue-Black the first time, Noodler’s Navy the 2nd) it continued to railroad and skip. I disassembled it again and soaked it overnite in soapy Dawn dish soap water. Next day I opened a few channels on the feed with an exacto knife, very slightly mind you. All That did the trick. It writes well now. HOWEVER, something that drives me nuts, and I noticed it on your pen too, Stephen, is the ink that leaks into the spacer sleeve behind the nib/feed assembly collar. I cannot get it out! When trying to change ink colors it bleeds and mixes and taints the new color! You did not mention it but it ruins any ink change experience. I like this pen BUT until I can find a way to get that ink out from behind the Nib assembly sleeve it unfortunately is a one ink-dedicated pen. And that’s a bummer. I bought one at the LA Show in February, but quit using it after a few weeks as it sometimes burped ink. That may have been my own inexperience in flex writing, but it didn’t make for enjoyment of the pen. It also got ink trapped between the nib collar and the section which I couldn’t completely clean out as I couldn’t unscrew it. The nib and feed came out but not the collar. So I just put the pen away.

    I just received mine! I have to be honest, I am surprised how awful it is. I bought from a online retail and has Commonwealth 2021 on the barrel. It still smells bad and dents and marks all over the body, the cap band has sharp edges. Ok, last time I bought a Noodlers pen was 3 years ago and they sent me a wrong pen and never bought after that until now. The nib is also a surprise, good and bad. It started great, then Triple Tails become Twin Tails, railroading is so annoying that I think I should return this. For $62 I can buy something much better than this. I love Noodlers inks but pen, not so much!

  • @jacobus57
    @jacobus57 3 роки тому +1

    Here's my issue with the vegetal resin; the ink disappears, which is why the pump filler, if it's still made from that resin, is a non starter.
    My understanding is this pen is made from butaryte (sp), which is more stable, less porous. Do you know from which material thi pump is made?
    And like you I appreciate the minimalist packaging. Even if I had the funds, on principle I would not purchase a pen that came in a ridiculous box. I want to pay for the pen, full stoo, not cabinetry!

    • @andylegg1878
      @andylegg1878 3 роки тому +1

      I see Goulet and JetPens have it listed for $55 USD atm. But in response I would have to disagree re. 'basically the same'. The Ahab was notorious for occasionally blobbing ink on the page, filling the cap when not in use, and drying out fairly quickly...to the point that I never kept ink in them for more than just a few days (I have had 3 Ahab's over time). The manufacturing tolerances of that pen were atrocious. From Dr. Brown's review, it would appear this latest pen design has corrected a significant number of those issues. So I think it's worth a few shekels more than the Ahab, albeit nowhere near the $90 CAD Wonder Pens is currently charging (with the exchange rate I would have expected something around $75.

    Ahab was not that great, I bought it one, few years back, the unique smelling plastic, and the pen lost the quality in not more than a year, slipping of the thread, at the filling unit and causing leaks. Now, I am not using it, the pen was unusable.

  • @jacknemo8021
    @jacknemo8021 3 роки тому +4

    There is no way Goulet didn't make sure those pens were perfect before sending them to you. You and your address are flagged in every manufacturer and distributor's database. These days you're going to get the very best quality controlled examples ever. I order one and it may not write, and will stink as you described. Mine won't have ben tested, cleaned, and allowed to "air" out by a guy who wants a decent review so he can move some inventory.

    • @TeamFish15
      @TeamFish15 3 роки тому +1

      He showed the cellophane wrapper it came in, so it would be interesting to know if it indeed came sealed. If so, Goulet probably didn’t check the nib.
