  • -Because of the sudden news of John Sterling announcing his retirement from the Yankee radio booth after 35 years, here is his first regular season Yankee broadcast from April 4, 1989 as aired on WROW-Albany. His partner that year and in 1990 was ex-player Jay Johnstone. Tommy John is the opening day starter at age 45 and has the last great game of his career. After the game, there is a postgame call-in show, an experiment that I think only lasted that one season.
    -Happy retirement John and thanks for the wonderful memories!

    If you look at the top left, Michael Kay is the writer for the Daily News.

    John's best work of all came when he and Michael Kay were partners, 1992-2001 I believe. We fans will all miss him.

    First inning, first game, and John Sterling is complaining about the loud PA system. Now THAT is CONSISTENCY!

    This has been a difficult week for legendary sportscasters. First Verne Lundquist’s retirement after The Masters. Now, John Sterling’s calling it a career.
    Thanks for posting John’s first Yankees game!

    Hey @epaddon, if you can, can you find the radio broadcast of game 1 of the 96 ALCS? The Bernie walk off is among my all-time favorite Sterling calls.

    One game I hope that you can find is Andy Hawkins 1990 no-hitter that he lost 4-0.

      John Miley sells that on CD. Unless I were to find an alternate recording myself that's different from Miley's I can't upload that one.

      @@epaddon How can someone sell a copyrighted broadcast without permission from MLB or the network? Also, how could they prove you uploaded the same version? And even if they did, does recording something make them the owner? Just curious; I don't know much about this. Thanks for the upload.

    • @epaddon
      @epaddon  2 місяці тому +1

      @@dantedepiro5677 John Miley has had an official license from MLB for decades. His versions are sold on CD and condensed to fit two CDs. Out of respect to him, I am not going to upload the same copy of what he sells to people because I want to keep seeing his company release more vintage games while he's still alive which will only come if more people keep buying the CDs he puts out. If though, I had a separate recording of this game that either I made myself or came from a source element I did the restoration work on (as was the case with this game) that would be different.

      @@epaddon Ah okay. I was not aware they had granted a license to an individual for their recordings. I appreciate your taking the time to respond. Keep up the good work. And I do remember that Andy Hawkins game. A comedy of errors and futility, unfortunately.

    When did John Sterling said his "Yankees win! THEEEEEE... YANKEES WIN!" catchphrase for the first time?

      Could be wrong, but I think Summer 1995 during the Yankees run to the (1st ever) AL Wild Card

    • @epaddon
      @epaddon  2 місяці тому +3

      @@PaulC-pn5sb No it was in 1996 when it came out spontaneously after Bernie Williams walk-off HR to win Game 1 of the ALCS (the Jeffrey Maier game). It gradually picked up after that and because it grew out of the championship drive that's why I always regarded it as a natural thing and not some catch-phrase he tried to come up with during the dark days of 1990 etc.

      Yeah John had to broadcast bad Yankees teams for 4 years from 1989-1992. And the rest is history after that.
