Awesome! Never been there, but a fellow I know in my hometown made a model of old Yankee Stadium (pre-renno look) and brought it with him to The Bronx when he saw the Yankees for the first time there. @@jakejp74 From what I understand, the primary reason the rule about excessive pine tar was put in place had to do with the pine tar causing baseballs to get scuffed up and they therefore had to be taken out of play sooner. AL President Lee McPhail felt that Brett was entitled to the home run because the pine tar didn't help the ball "go beyond the fence."

I think that Graig Nettles had already put it in Billy Martin's head the idea that George Brett was using too much pine tar on his bat. Because I think that Nettles was playing in the game while as a member of the Minnesota Twins where Thurman Munson was was called it for doing that.

I was 13 when I watched the pre-Pine Tar Game on TV. When Goose Gossage came on to pitch to George Brett at the top ot the 9th, I thought as Frank Messer said, "This will be a challenge." When Brett hit the foul ball, I thought, "He's going for it;" then "Uh oh! Uh oh!" I was glad I was about 10 miles from Yankee Stadium when Brett charged out of the dugout yet I'd thought he had a legimate gripe--how did pine tar affect the ball's traveling? Who'd have thought this was baseball history in the making?
