George Brett's gold medal sprint out of the dugout will never get old lol
Yeah gold medal sprint and chewing tobacco pumping out the side of his mouth. Classic!
Baseball Will Always and Forever Remain Thee Greatest Game in This Galaxy as it Takes Far More Intelligence, And Not Just Running around like Idiots Kicking a ball and crowds Rioting and Destroying Everything Whereas Baseball Pays Far Better and Has Better Stadiums and Cleaner Fans Plus it Takes Far More Skill to Hit Such a Small Ball So Far So It Will Remain America's and The Galaxies Greatest Game In The History of The Galaxy!!🏆⚾️🏆⚾️🏆⚾️🏆⚾️
I wonder if Brett would have actually hit Tim Mcclelland? Doubt it.. Ump would have crushed him!!
Forty years ago today truly a day I'll never forget as a Yankee fan George Brett kicked out ass.
Happy 40th anniversary of a pure classic!
I watched this live when it happened, Brett's charge seared a permanent memory into my brain
I watched it live too. I remembering thinking, "I'm glad I'm not in Yankee Stadium right now" when Brett charged out of the dugout. He'd said in an interview that he didn't remember charging out until someone showed him the video tape. He'd also praised Goose Gossage in this interview as being "one of the all time greats."
George Brett was the real deal. Always a great player. He was and very much known as an incredibly talented player.
I almost thought I recall Brett as a switch hitter . Maybe not. But I could've sworn.
When Brett was in his prime he was a force. I remember him being about as feared at the plate as anyone in any era.
@@vectorthurm the way they pitch inside today and at close to 100 speed? Brett would have a smashed face because he use to crowd the plate low and inside a lot.
isnt the nostalgia of sports an amazing thing.....i've been brought to tears watching stuff on the internet i hadnt seen since i was a child. No memories are as strong as the ones we make when we're small
The good ol days of BB. These guys were blue collar players man. It's very rare you see players like this anymore.
Some of the best batters during my childhood to teen years. George Brett, Wade Boggs, Tony Gwynn.
I agree. I have been a sox fan my whole life and loved Boggs until he went to the Yankees. That being said I will say that Tony Gwynn was a better hitter and probably the best I have ever seen . I am going to be 49 on the 13 of June so I remember growing up with these guys.
@@jeffcarlson9426 I used to watch the Yankees on WPIX channel 11, New York. I didn't like Boggs at all until he became a Yankee.
Thirty seven years ago today, George Brett most underrated players ever, as a Yankees fan I used to dread every time he came up. Because I knew he would knock it out of the park. In fact one game he hit 3 homeruns in one game at Yankee Stadium. Hell of a ball player
Awesome! Never been there, but a fellow I know in my hometown made a model of old Yankee Stadium (pre-renno look) and brought it with him to The Bronx when he saw the Yankees for the first time there. The office staff was so impressed with it, they offered a trade: his model for two game used Yankee uniform tops. I've seen them and as far as I know, they're still hanging proudly on display in his basement.
I'm a Twins fan, but I'm impressed by how the Yankees treated my friend. With respect.
I still miss Murcer, on and off the field. What a great person he was. He was blessed to have lovely and devoted wife Kay as well.
@@howie9751 I read Murcer's book before he died, plus I used to watch the Yankees on WPIX New York for almost every game when I was a kid. Yankee broadcaster Phil Rizzuto used to speak fondly of both Bobby and Kay.
George Brett was one of the best players that i have ever seen, and the Royals had many fine teams at that time.
I'm a die-hard Yankee fan, but I gotta admit that George Brett is the fuckin man.
I remember seeing that "first-hand" on TV and again in the news.
Seeing Bud Black pitch for the Royals here remind me of a game much later on (April 20 1991) when he was pitching for the SF Giants and the catcher was Steve Decker. You heard it right folks. The battery was called Black and Decker.
I saw this game on TV as it happened. Then, by sheer coincidence, I was at Kauffman Stadium, 25 years later. They gave out George Brett pine tar t-shirts. And yes, the Royals were hosting the Yankees!
2:13:30 "Uh oh....uh oh....that's gone..."
Amazing commentary.
I love it. Back when announcers didn't scream and rant in an attempt to get their calls onto Sportscenter.
i dont know why i get such a nostalgic feeling watching old sports videos. i just imagine watching this from a home in new york and being surprised by this whole situation
Brett's reaction is hysterical. I've never seen a baseball player so enraged before 😂
The Red Sox "Big Poopy".....excuse me.....Big Poppy got more enraged when someone walked by in front of him during an interview. He felt " disrespected".
What's interesting is that George Brett has since contended that the Pine Tar Incident was a blessing in disguise because before that, he was constantly being clowned on for getting hemorrhoids during the 1980 World Series. Still, I do find it a bit ironic that probably the most defining moment in the career of undoubtedly the greatest or most iconic player in Kansas City Royals history is him running out of the dugout at Yankee Stadium like a maniac to confront the umpires.
@@TMC1982Part2 That's a good point. I remember those George Brett hemorrhoid jokes back them. " Don't worry, George will put his all BEHIND him"....and " George will get to the BOTTOM of it".....and all that . LOL....it's still kind of funny.
Having grown up in Seattle it’s so strange to see Lou Piniella at bat! 😂
I was 10 years old watching the Saturday game of the week! This is pure gold!!
"A sworn affidavit from the previous umpire"
Laughed out loud.
The last inning was such a mess.
Watched this game with lifetime friends in Seaside Heights NJ 30 years ago today.I can't remember what I had for breakfast, but I will always remember this game and the entire day (7/24/83) like it was yesterday.
It's Goose Gossage's fault that he threw a Shitty Pitch to George Brett, not the Bat
Billy played this well someone said? Geezus Brett always tagged Goose. The first pitch Brett barely misses a HR to left. Martin was dumb AF for bringing Goose in.
The pine tar was where the homer hit, even if it was a shitty pitch, it was still a rule back then.
To poster of this video, this life-long Royals fan thanks you!
What a player George Brett was!!
From what I remember, George Brett's batting average reached around the high 300s. He mentioned in an interview that he was very competitive; I definitinely believe that. I'd been to a couple of Yankees/Royals games during the 1980s. I'd worry that, with one swing of his bat, Brett would prove to be a game-changer.
Especially 1980, hitting over the .400 mark up until the last few weeks of the season. Ended at .390
Forty years ago today, George Brett has one of the most epic and memorable meltdowns in M.L.B. history. The Royals-Yankees matchup is suspended, eventually resumed, and concluded with a 5-4 victory by the Royals.
Brett running out like a madman out the dugout never gets old
He should and I would have done so also considering they went through the whole game before it became a issue????? It is illegal by MLB rules to have foreign substance above 18 inches ( the reason they used the plate since it's 17 inches) but it is sad to allow Brett not being called on it sooner?????
With the hindsight we now have, it amuses me to listen to the announcers just after 11:00 debating whether Lou Piniella would make a good manager. Just wait seven years, guys...
Billy Martin played this one beautifully.
It was a silly rule meant to save the home team money on baseballs because pine tar causes a ball to discolor and be replaced
Continuation of game, from first pitch to last: 7 minutes, 21 seconds.
It's amazing how much different the game is today than it was
IMO I think back then, the athletes played more for the love of the game. When the old Yankee Stadium was torn down, I just didn't have the heart to go to another game. There was no need to tear down the House that Ruth Built.
The commissioner watered it down giving below avarage teams the wild card.
I was in attendance about 20 rows behind the Royals dugout. I can still remember the HR off Gossage and Brett running towards home plate with his arms flapping from my vantage point. The fans at the game had little to no knowledge of what was happening, since there was not a P.A. announcements about why the HR was not allowed.
You're right. We were also at the game on the third row of the top deck directly behind home plate. We were bewildered as to what was happening. All of a sudden, the PA started playing "New York, New York", and the security guards came onto the field.
We could only speculate that it had to do with a corked bat. It wasn't until we turned on the car radio that we found out.
Ah the days when the center field camera was way off center.
laststop3h You mean from the right side. It's always off center even today.
Back when they weren’t afraid to bring a HOF righty to face a HOF lefty
Been a fan since 77 as a family we blew up too.
I was 10 years old, watching this game with my Dad. I recall it as clear as day. Watching this game brought back so many memories. Thanks
You didn’t watch this game with your Dad. Me & him went to the game ourselves.. you were just a brat kid. We didn’t want to bring you.
Nice! I remember this one well as a kid. Thanks for posting.
I totally forgot Campy played for the Yanks too. He's still synonymous with the Oakland A's from years before.
Campy Campaneris, Played for The Old, Kansas City A's and I was At The Game When The Kansas City A's Played The New Kansas City Royals As The Kansas City A's Were Now The Oakland A's And Moving To Oakland and The New Kansas City Royals, Won Their First Game Defeating The New Oakland A's or, Former Kansas City A's!! In The Old Metro Stadium if Memory Serves and, I was Very Young....America's Sport, Baseball🏆⚾️🏆⚾️
I remember Bert Campanaris slung his bat at some pitchers head when he w oakland. Was back in the playoffs or world series way bk after he either got. hbp. or the picture brushed him back or whatever . . I Cant quite recall. Watched it live on tv. My memory fails me to the team or the pitcher he went head hunting for. I try look it up. It was a scene. And I instantly took a different opinion of campanaris. He was out for blood.. was back.in 70s. Foresure
@@daveyamericanpridegodbless9842 The first year as a kid when I started watching baseball, I was a Yankee fan and remember watching Yankee games when the played the Kansas City A's in KC. I wasn't very thrilled when they went to Oakland. .......I sure wouldn't want to go to Oakland these days to see a ball game.
George Brett went crazy! He went nuts in this game!
I have been going to Yankee Stadium all of my life and i got just one autograph....Frank Messer... He was driving by in his car outside the stadium and signed my pennant out the car window....lol
What a laser by Winfield!
24:53 A real home run. Over the 430 mark, death valley. Dave Winfield hit some of the hardest line drives I've ever seen and I've been watching baseball for 45 years
Thanks for uploading this whole game. Great memories of WPIX NY Channel 11. I would have been happy with a picture this good in the 60's.
Are we spoiled now or what ?
The best is getting to see a young Donny baseball wearing #46 and already showing his superior defensive skills at first base. 2:07:25
The best is getting to see him playing second base for the last out of the top of the 9th inning 25 days later. He's still the last left-hander to ever play at second base in the big leagues over 30 years later.
+george kline man crush on Donny boy? I wonder how Yaisel Puig views him?
+mark schnabel I grew up in the 80's. He was everything to a Yankee fan. To this day my fav baseball moment is his HR against Seattle in the 95 ALDS.
According to the book, "The Baseball Hall of Shame", Billy Martin knew weeks before the game that Brett used too much pine tar, but he waited for the right time to tell the umpires. So after Brett hit the homer, that was when Martin sprung into action, and as the saying goes, "All hell broke loose".
But what nobody ever mentions or talks about is why did they overrule 25 days later after he was caught red handed with the smoking gun
@@jakejp74 I ALWAYS WONDERED THIS ... HE VIOLATED THE RULE AND THEN HIS TEAM TRIED TO STEAL THE EVIDENCE TO FURTHER PROVE HOW GUILTY HE WAS ! SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN OVERTURNED !
@@jakejp74 From what I understand, the primary reason the rule about excessive pine tar was put in place had to do with the pine tar causing baseballs to get scuffed up and they therefore had to be taken out of play sooner. AL President Lee McPhail felt that Brett was entitled to the home run because the pine tar didn't help the ball "go beyond the fence."
I think that Graig Nettles had already put it in Billy Martin's head the idea that George Brett was using too much pine tar on his bat. Because I think that Nettles was playing in the game while as a member of the Minnesota Twins where Thurman Munson was was called it for doing that.
I was 19 and a Met fan,but I happened to have WPIX on that lazy summer afternoon and really glad I did,got to watch history. It still doesn't feel quite right whenever I see the Mets on ch. 11 these days, that will always be the Yankee channel in my memory, the Mets should be on 9.
They gave the home run back!
LOVE those Royals powder blue uniforms!!!
Good God, look at the condition of that field. Ball park groundskeeping has come a long way since 1983.
Long live The Pine Tar Game
I hadn't seen this since the sports news segment way back when...George was a hothead...but that pine-tar call was snake tactics by Billy Martin.
@@jimdep6542 but the reason it was illegal wasn’t because it gives an unfair advantage. It was an old outdated rule that had no impact on the outcome of the play. It was a cheap way to try to win a game.
i remember watching this in new zealand when it happened. its that iconic
Thanks youtube,,,,,,,,,,,,wow youtube is the next best thing to an actual time travel machine ! This takes me back to the summer of 83. Now all I need is an old K-car, a Comadore 64 computer and Rambo movies and I can re-live the big 80's !
Brett was a great player. He was the closest talent to Pete Rose i ever saw....you can bet on it!
Weird analogy. Not even remotely similar as players. As for talent, I will take Brett in a heartbeat. And there were a lot of players above both of them regarding talent.
In 1999, George Brett went into the National Baseball Hall Of Fame in Cooperstown on his first year of eligibility.
@@mrmojorisin8752 Yep. Better than Rose across the board. Well, I guess Rose did slap more singles.
Billy Martin. He was cool. Great player. Jus watched some old games w him as a player. Wow
For us Royals fans we Thank God this happened and Brett even got his home run back. For the most part this ended the KC vs. Yankees rivalry that started back in 76..for the most part we went out on a winning note but those Yankees were almost impossible to beat so many great players!
the resumption is the most classic Billy Martin you will ever see. Guidry in CF is just something
Guidry needed one more inning played to receive a bonus that was in his contract so billy put him in center to get that money...billy=hof
I remember watching this on WPIX 11
George Brett was an all-time great , with over 3000 hits.
I could only imagine what the guy could have done if he hadn't had so many injuries / health problems.
His career stats would have been unreal.
He played 20 years, and his numbers at the end were of a normal late career decline.
Watching Billy manage alone was worth the price of admission.
I need a George Brett rookie card.
Also very weird seeing Mattingly wear #46
An affidavit on the field. For the win!!!
remember that game like yesterday
Tim McClelland's strike calls were a lot quicker in 1983 than they are today.
This would be a subject for a future “JaguarGator7” video.
There's no SCORE, PITCH COUNT, INNING or PITCHER'S BOX on the screen!! How do I know what's happening??? Oh, I have to PAY ATTENTION!?? Ohh, how I miss those days!
It's hilarious that there were two protests in this game. The second one actually seems more interesting to me, especially with the umpire pulling out the statement to show to the manager.
What is so amazing is how long these teams essentially stayed together. It's a shame that greed really has destroyed a lot of potential dynasty type teams.
even if the pine tar was too far up on the bat it doesnt effect how the ball hits the bat,, really that sucks... I remember watching this game back in 1983
"Was Willie Mays Aikens named after Willie Mays?"
"I'm sure he was.."
TECHNICALLY this may have been an infraction of the rules, but come on, a little pine tar isn't responsible for Brett hitting that home run, Martin was a snake.
Yes. He knew about it from when they played each other a couple of weeks before.
Billy saved this move for the right moment. Boom
"There's the crowd here tonight...all 34 of them" lmao 😂 2:29 00
Who actually came here and watched the entire game?
I watched the whole game on TV. I was 13 then. When George Brett charged out, I was thinking, "I'm glad I'm not in Yankee Stadium right now." It was scary watching him. In a fairly recent interview, George said that he didn't even remember charging out like that until someone showed him the video replay.
I was 13 when I watched the pre-Pine Tar Game on TV. When Goose Gossage came on to pitch to George Brett at the top ot the 9th, I thought as Frank Messer said, "This will be a challenge." When Brett hit the foul ball, I thought, "He's going for it;" then "Uh oh! Uh oh!" I was glad I was about 10 miles from Yankee Stadium when Brett charged out of the dugout yet I'd thought he had a legimate gripe--how did pine tar affect the ball's traveling? Who'd have thought this was baseball history in the making?
Steve Balboni who played 1st base for Yankees went to KC the following year and won World Series in 1985 with them against Stl Cardinals. Balboni was huge in that series.
That's funny, don't remember the Yankees winning a World Series during the 80's.
I kept reading George Brett's lips and he was saying something like "blue sheet"whatever that means.
He's asking for a blue sheet of paper upon which he may write an official protest, right?
George Brett is one of my 5 All Time Most Personal Hated MLB Players along with Carlton Fisk, Bill "Spaceman" Lee, Pedro Martinez and Miguel Cabrera.
Bill Presley you're obviously a Yankee fan who lives in his mommy's basement George Brett was the best third baseman of all time better than Brooks Robinson better than Greg Nettles the only other person that compares Mike Schmidt watch and play he was clutch clutch baby clutch your pathetic Yankees fan who have you had a third base aside from graig Nettles George Brett kicks but the Yankees suck in 1968 they had Bobby Cox at 3rd yeah Bobby Cox played third base for the Yankees in 1968 bernanke's haven't had a decent third baseman in their entire history yes nobody compares to George Brett at third base
Was at this game. Frank Messer's call is priceless. Uh oh...
wow. I knew that was Hall Mcray coming to bat. Pretty good after being close to 40 years since seeing all these guys. Too funny.
Now, by Luck and luck alone - no Merit, no Blessing (and that to stand before another old, old, omnipresent friend) : Every time I view one of these historic games, I honor Bill Olsen, a lifelong, baseball overdog[Harper Collins English Dictionary 2014 ed.] fan.
So tomorrow it'll be 30 years. Amazing.
I watched this game cos I loved those KC teams back then and hated the Yankees, loved watching the games between the two on WPIX,loved Scooter.....Brett appealed the call and won so latter in the season they picked up the game from the point of the HR and KC ended up winning the game. Those were the days.....
Every newscast across the country, including WBBM channel 2, recapped that game in the sports segment.
Lee McPhail did the right thing in overturning the umpire's decision. As if George Brett needed pine tar on the bat to hit. What a stupid rule anyways.
They play each other on the 40th Anniversary Weekend this year July 21-23
being on the road and traveling all year, gets ya drinking sometimes. LOL
Would've loved to have seen this camera angle for some of the great lefthanders like Carlton, Guidry and Randy Johnson.
Bill White is a pure professional broadcaster. Very smart baseball man, I miss White, Rizzuto and Messer
I could listen to these guys all day!
