    You young ladies totally get the message of this song. A mature reaction, and you're showing wisdom far beyond your years in your post- song reaction. Well done. Aside from the powerful and poignant storyline, the music is so mesmerizing. It sticks with you in its dark way - you'll never forget it. One of the 80s touchstone pieces. Still stands up well more than 35 years later.

    That was, indeed, a powerful song. The dichotomy between the rather beautiful, mainly calm, voice and the situation lifts this beyond being just a great song.

    It's easy to see on your faces how it strained your hearts. Mine too. And I'm a guy. It still brings tears to my eyes whenever I see the video. I see it as an anthem for freedom from abusive relationships. Amiee Mann's vocals are hauntingly beautiful. Best of all, they carry weight of fear and angst. So powerful. My most favorite part is the line "Shut up, shut up, she might overhear," which hints there is more behind this song.

    @Dana's Faith:
    Hello ladies, not sure if you knew this or not, but this singer actually wrote this about a male friend of hers whom was being abused by his girlfriend. She ended up singing it from the perspective of a woman singing about a man. I enjoy how it shows that both men and women can be victims of abuse. I really enjoy your videos, good job young ladies! Take care and thank you for advocating for victims.❤️

    I was lucky enough to meet Aimee Mann back in 1981 about a year or two before the sun became popular I talked to her for about 10 minutes as she was working as a manager in Boston at a record shop called Newbury comics. She asked me why I bought so many records as my shopping cart was full of music LOL. I said I'm planning on being a music agent someday and I need to know what's going on in the music scene. She said oh why don't you book my band into Providence area as that's where we were from. I said what's the name of your band and she said promptly the young snakes! Proceeded to give me a cassette tape and listen to it on the way home. It was a pretty good song and album but very artsy Rock nothing like this song at all whatsoever. I did get her a gig in Providence as she promised for about $150 as an opener for some national rock band at the time. However I will never forget her in the conversation we had at Newbury comics when she was a young lady in her early twenties not even looking for fame. Yes the song is about an abusive boyfriend she had. Obviously sending a message but also a great song and great lyrics from a wonderful human being. That's my story. PS, she had eyes you can see through and beauty beyond believable

    Great words of wisdom afterwards, Juliet. I could see how affected you both were by this song. The singer Aimee Mann was based where I live -- Boston -- for many years, going first to the famous Berklee School of Music and a friend of mine, he's 6 years older than I, very recently told me that they were at Berklee together and Aimee Mann started as a "shy meek girl" who asked him for help with her homework once and then a year later she was unrecognizable, became a lot more confident quickly. She has had a truly great solo career too -- she's made many good albums has written tons of good songs. She's quite a talented songwriter.

    great song, when someone writes and records a song they are telling a story so I like to dig that out, some are beautiful love songs, Led Zeppelin, Thank You, Tonic, If You Could Only See, goofy songs like Lounden Wainwright III, Dead Skunk, Leo Sayer, I Can Dance or sad songs like The Bee Gees, Gotta Get A message To You or Otep, Home Grown... sometimes the story is the most important part... thank u guys for for all the great videos...

    And you talking about domestic abuse will be taken to heart for people who are going through it. What makes it worse is when the children are exposed to it!
    It could possibly take their spirit away and that is so heartbreaking to hear!
    And I'm sure you will make a difference when they hear your voice talking about it!

    The power of music.
    Love songs and songs of gratitude and joy can be beautiful and stunning. It's the songs that come from sadness and pain that are always the most powerful. These songs let hurting people know that they are not alone. When you have no words to express your pain to someone else, music can do it for you Help open a door for discussion, help and healing. Great job girls.

    Yes, it's tough to listen to but yeah, with a beautiful voice, and it does build and build to a crescendo; and hopefully you will never, ever be put in a position where a boy talks over you . . . but every girl goes through it and has to find her voice. But kids today are so much more compassionate and strong than they've ever been, so never, ever be afraid to speak up! You're both so smart and capable and kind; you can always find that strength in dark times if you try.

    My most sincere congratulations for seeing such young people talking about such good music.- I will try to be concise.- I came to live in another country. I met a couple, he mistreated her a lot for being a macho Muslim.- but I loved them both because He was a very good friend of mine.- Many times I saw his mistreatment of her in person.- I tried to talk to him but he always had an excuse.- One day we almost came to blows.- So I preferred to stay away.- One day she told me that i her best friend and he wanted to shout his pain and he told me that if one day he had the opportunity because of my way of being he would have liked to be my everything.- she looks a lot like the singer of this song.- she divorced and left from the country.-
    I lost contact with her .- I had never paid attention to the lyrics of this song .- my tears are rolling .- I think I needed to tell someone .- sorry girls another real life story .- thankyou -.
