Big Eurovision fan from US. Having 40-50 countries sending songs each year, there’s a big variety of genres with pop and ballad songs being the most common but genres like hard rock and punk have made appearances aswell. Countries sometimes send ”serious” songs that are musically of great quality and sometimes ”joke” songs that are meant to just entertain or actually send a political/social message. There is less traditional music being sent to Eurovision than like 20 years ago but it’s not completely finished. In a nutshell, you can expect pretty much anything

Finland has always been a kind of laughing stock at Eurovision, always finishing last. Then, one year, a group from Rovaniemi far up north, came and totally dominated. Eurovision was where (in the 70s) ABBA won it, with their outrageous costumes, but it showed how good they were - they went on to do lots of popular tracks etc.

I don’t think many Americans knew that there were many popular artistes who had some success in Eurovision. Cliff Richard’s song Congratulations was a Eurovision song, Julio Iglesias represented Spain one year, the song Eres Tu by Mocedades which hit #9 in the US in 1974 was a Eurovision song, Celine Dion actually won for Switzerland in 1988, and last but not least Katarina & the Waves of Walking on Sunshine fame also managed to win in 1997 for the UK.
I watched the "song along" segment of this movie over and over ... it was so amazing. I'm a smidge taken aback by the wood-paneled background, Will. Time for a makeover. One of the best things my hubby and I ever did was paint our wood-walled TV room.
The next movie should be about The Game without boarders. "Jeux sans frontières". Aired in some european countries like mine, Portugal. It was like the Olympics but with ridiculous games. It was fun though, spent my childhood watching that crap.
My favorite thing about Conan is that he doesn't fake laugh unlike some other host. Will Ferrell made the joke about getting the prop guy Omaha Steaks and nothing from Conan. Just moves on. I love how genuine he is. Then we have people like Fallon who laughs uncontrollably if you sneeze.
It might have been Letterman who said that, and not Leno. I can't remember. It might have been Letterman on an episode of Norm McDonalds podcast/interview show/thing.
I feel like the song What is Eurovision, that Måns and Petra sang in the second semi final 2016, is better for beginners. ua-cam.com/video/v6qSt8Qp9ck/v-deo.html
From when Eurovision started 1956 until 1974 the artist were dressed in nice suits and eveninggowns. But 1974 Abba won the whole competition dressed in some kind of crazy outfits with their conductor dressed like Napoleon. After that the show changed from being kind of sophisticated to what it is today. A glam, fun, crazy show just for the amusement
With luck this will give the Eurovision Song Contest more exposure. I'd LOVE to see a major network here pickup all three broadcasts. No more having to VPN to another country. No more having to put up with commentators I can't understand. Been watching the contest for about 7 years now and look forward to it every year. Was real sad when it was canceled this year. Really wanted to see Little Big preform.
It’s amazing, isn’t it? And it gets better each year. Usually there are 1-2 songs I like but this year I liked 5-6 songs and most years I have a favourite contestants and they eventually release albums and grow even more as an artist. People think the UK doesn’t take it seriously but I think the UK takes it too serious and we keep sending songs that might do okay on the radio but far too bland for Eurovision. I knew we would come last with such a boring song and dull performance! Love Ukraine, France, Switzerland, Greece, Iceland!
Greetings from Spain. The film is very good, I laughed a lot and I think it captures very well the essence of the Eurovision festival, it even winks at the political connotations of the contest, which is the funniest part.
Abba is really famous in the Philippines. When you key in their songs in the karaoke machine, everyone can sing along. I think most of us is aware of Euro vision, but we don't know how dramatic the performances are.
The Eurovision contestants ARE cool. It's just that America's definition of "cool" is sex and violence. Music has to be aggressive to be "cool". In Europe not so much. In Europe we like the traditional rhythms of different countries and cultural stuff. So singing vikings, like last year Norway, or before last year Denmark, ARE cool.
'Cool' can mean any number of things, it's just in the US 'cool' is also also be applied to hip-hop and rap - a music that isn't always violent and has influenced music world-wide. Pop, the type of music that is typically featured in Eurovision contests pretty much comes from the US. The Eurovision song contest is very cool, clearly, US citizens are obsessed with it right now and even admire/envy you guys for having such a contest. It's awesome. That said, please don't crap on our influential musical genres.
Loved the movie, but let's not call it "the Ukraine", especially since you've lifted their prop, and had the winner who was from Ukraine as a cameo in the movie.
American here! I fell into a Eurovision wormhole last year after finding the first ever performance of Riverdance and I can say I’ve been converted. :)
This is rather late reply (lol been watching this year's entries so YT recommends me all Eurovision stuff) Past few years so many Americans have fell to it..it started before this movie, but feels like during pandemic it really escalated. Saw the movie last night and it was such a great parody! Really enjoyed it. Yah yah Ding Dong, hilarious!!! Eurovision is a sort of never ending freaky circus show. Very entertaining because you never know what’s next. Did I mention we won last year? I didn’t? Well, we did after 40 years. And although everybody claims they hate the show it was kind of a national celebration.
Eurovision is goofy and something Will Ferrell could get really right. He is of the mark all the time in a way that would work with that type of entertainment.
I'm from Brazil and the first time I ever heard of Eurovision was when I visited Sweden in 2016. It's interesting how something so big in Europe is almost unheard of in the rest of the world.
As an Icelander: He and Pierce Brosnan did slightly believable Swedish accents in the movie. As far from Icelandic accent as if you tried to sound Chinese with a cartoonish Japanese accent. Geographically close, different languages.
I'm a European and frankly I never understood Eurovision. 99% of the songs are hot garbage and the politics are disgusting, after you watch a few of them you kinda know who is going to get voted by who.

Being a swede, I can't really grasp what is so crazy about Eurovision. But I guess that's because I grew up with it and so forth.
Finland has always been a kind of laughing stock at Eurovision, always finishing last. Then, one year, a group from Rovaniemi far up north, came and totally dominated. Google Lordi and Hard Rock Hallelujah. They crushed the opposition and as hell froze over, Finland had finally won the Eurovision after years of ridicule. 😄🤘🤘🤘
Lordi is SO AMAZING! 👐👐
Denisse Aguirre yes! My mom's uncle used to babysit Tomi, Mr Lordi himself, when Tomi was little. They're from Rovaniemi, my mom's family. So that's pretty cool! 😄
Finland was robbed in the eightiees though, they were amazing pretty much that whole decade and did'nt get any cred for it.
Don't worry man. Spaniards nearly don't care about Eurovision anymore cause we always lose.
@@claravitoriaortega9016 I never understood why spain never gets points. You guys are always good in my opinion. (Except that surfer dude, but apparently that was because he only got in because his daddy pulled some strings or something ? 🤔🤷🏻♀️)
But the problem is you always come up with the exact same thing. That's like the donkey that keeps hitting his head against the same stone and keeps repeating and gets nosebleeds every time.
I hope one day the spanish song will be special and we will vote for it.
Like we did this year with switzerland (who are always awful but this year top 3)
Eurovision was where (in the 70s) ABBA won it, with their outrageous costumes, but it showed how good they were - they went on to do lots of popular tracks etc.
eurovision week is like Christmas for me... I love everything about it, the songs, technical production, everything is amazing
Riverdance was originally a 7 minute fill in put on by RTÉ between the performances and the voting. No one really remembers who won that year, just Riverdance.
Australia have taken part in recent Eurovision song competitions as they are such big fans!
I miss the times when participants in the ESC were obligated to sing in their country's language. Nowadays most songs are in English.
But the top 5 this year only had ONE song in english.
@@JadedKate and they didn't get nearly the amount of votes from the public as they were expecting. The days of singing in your own language is coming back.
In 2017 Portugal won with a portuguese jazz-based ballad, and Italy won this year woth an italian glam rock song. I think times are changing
I am an American that moved to Norway mid 1990s and Norway won (Secret Garden - Nocturne) so I was hooked.
"Rock power ballads dressed as vikings, that's something that really could happen on Eurovision."
This was literally the Danish entry in 2018.
This movie was so wholesome, and I haven’t even watched Eurovision for years. So bravo Will Ferrel 👏
The hamster wheel thing makes sense... the singer is singing "Don't stop... something something... running for your love" or something like that.
Play Ja Ja DingDong,
PLAY IT 😂😂😂
I WON’T PLAY IT
what you're missing is that eurovision contestants and viewers rarely ever take it seriously either. Or at least, some do and some don't. Anything goes really, which is the beauty of it
I don’t think many Americans knew that there were many popular artistes who had some success in Eurovision.
Used to watch it in Greece .it was sooo good
This wasn’t well know in the Uk and maybe not even on TV but we had a similar show called It’s A Knockout which was probably on a much smaller scale.
Americans: If you have never heard of Eurovision - search for Love Love Peace Peace.
You're welcome...
It's great, but I feel like you have to know some of the references or it's just a silly pop song
I feel like the song What is Eurovision, that Måns and Petra sang in the second semi final 2016, is better for beginners.
ua-cam.com/video/v6qSt8Qp9ck/v-deo.html
Will should represent Sweden in Eurovision, then I would watch.
She sings "don't stop"... the hamster wheel has sense in this context.
Will looks like my grandmother and it’s freaking me out 😂
Wilma is Grandma Ferrell?! 😳 😯 🤯
Eurovision is insane, hilarious, and a lot of fun!
Okay but what does Ja Ja Ding Dong mean?
@@localandonlinepreciousmeta3575 nothing nada nix its not even icelandic haha
Like Will Ferrell!
@@localandonlinepreciousmeta3575 in Swedish it translates to 'yes yes ding dong'. Any help?
@@localandonlinepreciousmeta3575 Nothing. Just like "na na na" in American songs.
That Conan had never heard of Eurovision is so shocking to me.
Wait, how has Conan never heard of the marvel called Eurovision? I stream it through my VPN every year. It is a crazy comedy fest with singing.
Eurovision started very seriously 65 years ago and has gradually descended into madness.
Dude Will literally now looks like an old version of Napoleon Dynamite
Abba is really famous in the Philippines. When you key in their songs in the karaoke machine, everyone can sing along. I think most of us is aware of Euro vision, but we don't know how dramatic the performances are.
Same is australia we love abba we have always loved abba.
Elitist much?
This guy has the world figured out. Nothing is a secret to him.
Strangely even when he’s being serious he’s still kinda funny he has a entertaining personality
Will is so engaging, even on a video call, it comes through.
for anyone curious - act he was referring to was Mariya Yaremchuk - Tick - Tock, had to look it up
Loved the movie, but let's not call it "the Ukraine", especially since you've lifted their prop, and had the winner who was from Ukraine as a cameo in the movie.
Will looks like Effie Trinket and Rick had a love child with that hair
American here! I fell into a Eurovision wormhole last year after finding the first ever performance of Riverdance and I can say I’ve been converted. :)
Did you watch Eimear Quinn ?
@@JadedKate Yes I have! Loved it! :)
This is rather late reply (lol been watching this year's entries so YT recommends me all Eurovision stuff)
Past few years so many Americans have fell to it..it started before this movie, but feels like during pandemic it really escalated. The reaction youtubers has always some European whispering "pssst. React to this eurovision thing"
It goes from "wtf I am watching. What is this madness" to "omg i cannot stop this, this is awesome " within week.
I have personally converted one American.
i never thought i'd see a person more reflective of light than conan, will ferrell shines
It's May, Eurovision is on soon, we need a follow up movie!
Yeah we germans know we will never win again still it's soo much fun to watch and hear all those songs
Bless you all
We literally won 2010
@@denisenova7494 i know
Imagine going to Eurovision and sitting next to Will Ferrell
i never heard of eurovision . It's unfortunate that we never hear bout all these other great artist and shows from other countries
I'm from Brazil and the first time I ever heard of Eurovision was when I visited Sweden in 2016. It's interesting how something so big in Europe is almost unheard of in the rest of the world.
Not a big fan of Will and never heard of Eurovision before, but I really enjoyed this movie.
When you realise Conan is 4 years older than Will, but still looking 20 years younger
To be fair Conan has had a facelift and some other work done. He still looks great, shows plastic surgery doesn't have to be outrageous.
Yes, please please do an album Will!!! Really great voice and a lot of charisma which are more important part.
Eurovisión is the guilty pleasure of all Europeans lol
Will actually did a great Swedish accent
In the movie he was going for Icelandic I guess. =P
As an Icelander: He and Pierce Brosnan did slightly believable Swedish accents in the movie. As far from Icelandic accent as if you tried to sound Chinese with a cartoonish Japanese accent. Geographically close, different languages.
Yeah I heard his accent and thought he literally sounds like a Swede from Stockholm and I was like isn't he supposed to be Icelandic? lol
I'm a European and frankly I never understood Eurovision. 99% of the songs are hot garbage and the politics are disgusting, after you watch a few of them you kinda know who is going to get voted by who.
Eurovision is something I would despise if I were to watch it on a quiet night in. But if I meet up with a whole bunch of friends and we all get happily drunk while we watch it, it can be very good fun 😂
So true... 😂
@Richie Tata how is that relevant to a show loved by 200million? 🤣🤣
This is exactly why we love it
@Richie Tata Eurovision is inherently political, it was literally created to unite a war torn europe after WW2. Doesn't get much more political than that.
I found out about it when my husband showed me epic sax man 8 years ago. Haven’t stopped watching it since, but I definitely didn’t talk about it either. When I did everyone thought it was stupid 😂
Conan acting surprised that masked people sing rock songs on Eurovision when he literally had Lordi as quests???
I like how he treats americans in the movie. Very funny 🤣
