Canned pumpkin is expensive where I live. Full price would be $4.99 per 28 oz can ! I often use it in baking and to mix in our dogs food when their stomach is upset (vet recommended). I didn’t want to keep paying that price so the day after Halloween when I saw the grocery store had marked all the large pumpkins down to 99 cents each I bought three, cut them in half, cooked them in the oven all afternoon and scraped them out . Ended up with 25 medium freezer bags of pumpkin for $2.97!

I was thinking of tin tomatoes as they are cheap and so useful. Baked beans can also be a good cheap item to bulk out dinners.
I must say that bread looks amazing.

another tip: if in doubt about the freshness of your baking powder take a half cup of HOT water and stir in a half teaspoon of the baking powder. you should see small bubbles right away. that's the freshness indicator. it will save you time, money and ingredients. thanks for the tips. hope you get to your subscriber goal. i just added to that number. cheers!

I agree with your list. I suggest split peas and lentil as very low cost foods that taste good and stretch a budget. Also, one 10-16 oz bag of frozen mix veggies (peas, carrots, green beans, corn and Lima bean) costs about $1 to $1.50. I add 1/3 to 1/2 bag to soups, stews or pot roasts, so one bag stretches a long way and ups the veggies in a meal.

Great list Emmy. Sometimes we just need to adjust our meals to still have yummy food, but still stay within our budget. On another note, just last week at a grocery outlet, I was able to get a 4 pound block of sharp cheddar cheese for $3.99!!! That is a dollar per pound! With a 6 month expectation date. I cut it up into 1/2 pound chunks and put it into the freezer. I was sooo excited!! The deals are out there. We bought a meat slicer a couple months ago, much to my chagrin, but I have to admit it is really fantastic! We are able to buy big chunks of cheese like that when they are on sale along with making our own turkey and ham roast and slicing up the meat for sandwiches. We even cut my homemade bread perfectly. It has really already paid for itself within two months. I hate to admit when my husband is right but this time he was spot on!

I’m never without flour, eggs, sugar, rice,, peanut butter, chicken, beans, milk, veggies that go on sale! I cut up onions, peppers bag them. Then I have them when the price is higher! Cheese I grate myself have some in freezer and some in Fridge. Fruits on sale I do the same some to eat some freeze. Potato’s ... they have been high but when they put them on sale I rack up! I also make sure to have vinegar! Sooo many uses! When a recipe calls for butter milk I use vinegar and milk because buttermilk is high! I could write a book! This is definitely only a very few things anyone can do. Just look an you can be very creative! Love your videos.

We're a breakfast for dinner loving family and right now I get my eggs for free from my Granddaughters' Mom. When you mentioned carrots in the sauce (gravy) to replace sugar, I saw a documentary where people spent time in UK living like WWII and when sugar was rationed, they used shredded carrots as a replacement. Great video as usual.

One thing i like to do is get a big ham when they are on sale. Like 98 cents a pound.
First day you boil it with potatoes, carrots, and cabbage. It's kinda hard to screw up.
Then with the left overs. I divide it up and make a ham chowder, split pea soup and a ham and bean soup.
We decided Which one to eat right away and freeze the rest. Ham soups are fantastic.
Also another thing we don't do often anymore that needs to come back is putting oats in soups. I honestly have never seen anyone do it. However it used it used to be a good way to thicken up a soup.

That bread sounds amazing! Definitely going to try the recipe. I really love that you mention the names of the old cookbooks you have. I think that if times get tougher we will want those older frugal recipes. I think flour is probably one of my go-to ingredients. I no longer buy prepared foods and flour is extremely versatile. Another quick tip is my toaster oven. I try to use it instead of the big oven as much as possible unless I’m making several dishes at a time. I can bake a loaf of bread, a square casserole, etc inside. I feel like it really saves on energy as it’s a small appliance compared to the regular oven. No need to heat all the empty space. Already looking forward to your next video 😂

Very true, Grandknit. Even when we were a family of 6 at home, I used the mini toaster-convection oven over the range's oven, unless I had multiple dishes in there at once. A real energy saver to be sure.

I don't know if you have Big Y near you, but this week's Big Y club savings were you get one whole chicken and/or one whole pork shoulder for $.77/lb. You know I got one each! Something I've been doing for years is I cook my pumpkins in the fall. Then I puree it and freeze it! I use it for lots of things, but especially homemade pumpkin peanut butter dog treats! My dog loves them

I use canned pumpkin for a fantastic pasta sauce - it has sausage or ground meat, but you could also chop up mushrooms and zucchini and add it. Such a good reminder to use this vegetable all year round. I also do not like beans, but you're right. It's such good food. Great tip with the greens - I also think people forget frozen greens are great in soups and pasta - especially spinach because it wilts down so much. Also, using the chicken carcass to make broths - I especially loved the video you did with the whole chicken using it four different ways. Another great video and inspiration - I'm doing a frugal mindset for Lent, and your videos are a blessing.
My mom used to stretch meals when money was tight with rice, especially chicken pot pie. I also just purchased a 25-pound bag of long grain rice from Sam's Club for less than $10, and they delivered it for free to my door. That will last my family and me a long time. And don't throw those bananas away - you can freeze super ripened bananas and use them for smoothies and baking. Same with sweet potatoes.
