      Don’t be weirded out by the unattended shops as there is often a bell somewhere and and look out those trust box things (for payment). When we visited it felt no one actually worked anywhere but they’re there muddling about somewhere else. It’s very much a Midsommer Murders / Agatha Christy vibe

      @@MeansToTravel about 8 miles north of Oxford. The A4260 runs from Oxford to Banbury, the A44 from Oxford to Woodstock. Upper Canpsfield road links the two by running along the northern edge of Oxford Airport. The Straight Mile runs from the A4260 to a point about halfway along Upper Campsfield Road.

    This British man found this video very interesting. Thanks for the posting. Two points of detail. 'Parking on the sidewalk' is illegal in Britain - but prosecutions are extremely rare. Secondly the Roman Road Fosse Way is pronounced as one syllable - 'Foss'. The e is silent.

      Thanks for sharing both of these points! And of course thanks for watching!
      So interesting to have it confirmed that parking with two wheels up on the sidewalk is illegal, since I’ve seen it so often in Britain! No wonder I said it felt wrong - haha I must have had an intuitive hunch.
      And noted about Fosse Way! Sometimes I feel like our entire time in Britain was just us walking around trying but failing to pronounce things 🤣🤣🤣

    Eliz, you did this all in one day? Great videography and the subtitles were quite helpful, too. Those lanes looked pretty narrow. Another fun fact: Agatha Christie based her Miss Marple series around Chipping Camden.

    • @MeansToTravel
      @MeansToTravel  2 роки тому

      We did! I probably wouldn’t recommend it, though, because we felt very rushed all day. Derek and I agree that two full days in the Cotswolds is kinda the minimum amount needed to make it feel like leisure. 😌

      That’s so funny that you mention that about Chipping Camden! I didn’t know that, but I can tell you I went to a LOT of Cotswold towns and villages last summer! The one that seem to me most like it was straight out of Miss Marple was Coln St Aldwyns ❤️

    Wearing a poppy leading up to the 11th of November is very British but it's also something that's done in other Commonwealth countries. Canadians have a poppy similar to the one the British wear, I remember seeing a picture of Prince Charles on a visit to Canada wearing 2 poppies, the British one and a Canadian one. In Australia (and I think New Zealand) poppies are only really worn on November 11th, there's no real tradition of wearing it weeks beforehand. But there is a lot of poppy artwork displayed around memorials, knitted poppies were all the rage recently. Australian Remembrance Day poppies are more realistic, than the stylised ones in the Uk and Canada. I quite like the tradition of poppy wearing and buy one each year from the RSL, which is the veteran's organisation in Australia.

    • @MeansToTravel
      @MeansToTravel  2 роки тому

      Great point! I had seen some folks wear them in the US over the years, too, but you're very right that it's definitely more common in the UK and Commonwealths. Thanks for adding this comment!

    I'm driving up the Fosse Way through moreton etc from cirencester later this afternoon.
    Does coming to England from the US seem reasonably financially good value for money nowadays, given the exchange rate etc? It's pretty tough the other way round now.

    • @MeansToTravel
      @MeansToTravel  Рік тому +1

      I hope your drive went well and you saw some great sites!
      To answer your question, yes, coming to England now is much cheaper, which is certainly nice for us Americans! The first time I went to England years and years ago, the exchange rate was around 2:1. I'm personally very glad that traveling to the UK has become more affordable since then for Americans!
      With that, at least for you guys the pound is still higher than the dollar, so traveling to the US would still be more affordable than other potential holiday options for Brits!

    • @MeansToTravel
      @MeansToTravel  10 місяців тому

      Great question! We left central Bristol around 8:30am and arrived in Chipping Campden around 5pm (which was probably later than we would have wanted given things were just closing). I’d recommend leaving earlier than we did in the morning so you could make sure to get to every stop before five/sunset.
      An additional consideration was that we were traveling in late October when the area is less busy with tourist traffic, so if you’re driving during high season expect the driving journeys to take a bit longer. Hope you have a wonderful trip! 😀

We wanted to hit all five in the day before sunset. Yep, we were definitely most interested in the tourist spots on this day trip in the Cotswolds! Perhaps if we had more than a day we’d have looked for more. With travel, I think there’s always a trade-off. For example, as a former NY’er, I am never surprised that tourists visit Central Park more than Greenacre Park, even though Greenacre Park was my personal favorite spot in midtown. I suppose it was nice to have a spot that felt local-y to me!
