Don’t be weirded out by the unattended shops as there is often a bell somewhere and and look out those trust box things (for payment). When we visited it felt no one actually worked anywhere but they’re there muddling about somewhere else. It’s very much a Midsommer Murders / Agatha Christy vibe
Your mention of The Street brings to mind a road i pass frequently and even use occasionally. It's called The Straight Mile. Strangely enough it's a mie long and ruler straight
@@MeansToTravel about 8 miles north of Oxford. The A4260 runs from Oxford to Banbury, the A44 from Oxford to Woodstock. Upper Canpsfield road links the two by running along the northern edge of Oxford Airport. The Straight Mile runs from the A4260 to a point about halfway along Upper Campsfield Road.
Harriet and I have been to Bristol and The Cotswolds . So much of what we think of the UK's countryside. It rained when we were there too. The video was stunning straight of the cinema. It brings back more memories of our times there. Thank You for taking us along. Sending you lots of love💖💖 Jim and Harriet. Richmond, Va.
Sorry to hear it rained for you, too! I suppose that's fairly common, and you just have to push through because it's still so beautiful. Thanks as always for watching, Jim and Harriet! 🙏💙
This British man found this video very interesting. Thanks for the posting. Two points of detail. 'Parking on the sidewalk' is illegal in Britain - but prosecutions are extremely rare. Secondly the Roman Road Fosse Way is pronounced as one syllable - 'Foss'. The e is silent.
Thanks for sharing both of these points! And of course thanks for watching! So interesting to have it confirmed that parking with two wheels up on the sidewalk is illegal, since I’ve seen it so often in Britain! No wonder I said it felt wrong - haha I must have had an intuitive hunch. And noted about Fosse Way! Sometimes I feel like our entire time in Britain was just us walking around trying but failing to pronounce things 🤣🤣🤣
Those cakes are ALWAYS for sale on the tables in Castle Combe! Considering the number of tourists that go through that town, I bet the baker makes a lot of money! 🤑 I have been to Castle Combe several times, I didn’t go last year. So I still have not filmed a video of it for my channel!
Eliz, you did this all in one day? Great videography and the subtitles were quite helpful, too. Those lanes looked pretty narrow. Another fun fact: Agatha Christie based her Miss Marple series around Chipping Camden.
We did! I probably wouldn’t recommend it, though, because we felt very rushed all day. Derek and I agree that two full days in the Cotswolds is kinda the minimum amount needed to make it feel like leisure. 😌
That’s so funny that you mention that about Chipping Camden! I didn’t know that, but I can tell you I went to a LOT of Cotswold towns and villages last summer! The one that seem to me most like it was straight out of Miss Marple was Coln St Aldwyns ❤️
Wearing a poppy leading up to the 11th of November is very British but it's also something that's done in other Commonwealth countries. Canadians have a poppy similar to the one the British wear, I remember seeing a picture of Prince Charles on a visit to Canada wearing 2 poppies, the British one and a Canadian one. In Australia (and I think New Zealand) poppies are only really worn on November 11th, there's no real tradition of wearing it weeks beforehand. But there is a lot of poppy artwork displayed around memorials, knitted poppies were all the rage recently. Australian Remembrance Day poppies are more realistic, than the stylised ones in the Uk and Canada. I quite like the tradition of poppy wearing and buy one each year from the RSL, which is the veteran's organisation in Australia.
Great point! I had seen some folks wear them in the US over the years, too, but you're very right that it's definitely more common in the UK and Commonwealths. Thanks for adding this comment!
Thanks so much for watching and joining the community, so glad to have you! The Cotswolds is an easy weekend or overnight destination from London so I hope you get to go on your next visit!
Happy to! Here is a Google Maps link with the route we took. goo.gl/maps/Umofq6PzDnfvWi6t7 I probably wouldn't recommend doing all five towns in one day with kiddos because of how much driving there is, but we were so glad we were able to see so many cute spots! Have fun!
Beautiful.. Where did you drive from? London? I am planning to rent a car from Birmingham and drive to Cotswold (Chipping Camden, Snowshill, Stow-on-the-wold, bourton-on-the-water, Burford, Cirencester and Chedworth Roman Villa) for a day tour and back to Birmingham in October! Not sure if i can do all those in a single day 😂
Sounds like a really great visit! On this trip, we drove from Bristol. However, we've also visited the Cotswolds from Bath before, too! Driving from London is a bit of a long journey.
looks amazing - what pubs/restaurants do you recommend from your trip? Also - did you pass by some historic buildings that were converted into hotels/Inns? Would love to know
I'm driving up the Fosse Way through moreton etc from cirencester later this afternoon. Does coming to England from the US seem reasonably financially good value for money nowadays, given the exchange rate etc? It's pretty tough the other way round now.
I hope your drive went well and you saw some great sites! To answer your question, yes, coming to England now is much cheaper, which is certainly nice for us Americans! The first time I went to England years and years ago, the exchange rate was around 2:1. I'm personally very glad that traveling to the UK has become more affordable since then for Americans! With that, at least for you guys the pound is still higher than the dollar, so traveling to the US would still be more affordable than other potential holiday options for Brits!
Thank you for the video! What time did you leave in the morning and what time did you arrive at your last stop? I’m trying to figure out how long the drive is going to take, and I know Google maps cannot be trusted on its estimate. Thank you!
Great question! We left central Bristol around 8:30am and arrived in Chipping Campden around 5pm (which was probably later than we would have wanted given things were just closing). I’d recommend leaving earlier than we did in the morning so you could make sure to get to every stop before five/sunset. An additional consideration was that we were traveling in late October when the area is less busy with tourist traffic, so if you’re driving during high season expect the driving journeys to take a bit longer. Hope you have a wonderful trip! 😀
@@aprilc9877 I don't recall specifics since we aren't big on planning things to the hour/minute, but we definitely didn't dawdle in each town. We wanted to hit all five in the day before sunset. I believe we spent the longest amounts of time in Bibury and Bourton-on-the-Water, and then we drove a long ways back to Bristol from Chipping Campden after dark.
@@MeansToTravel thank you! I think what we’re going to do is to have a list and modify it as we go based on time. We need to be in Stratford at a particular time, so want to be sure not to run late :)
You missed the essential part of the Cotswolds; you only did the usual tourist stuff. Thankfully most of the region is unspoilt because the typical tourist doesn’t know about the hidden gems , such as the natural springs. And thank god too !
Yep, we were definitely most interested in the tourist spots on this day trip in the Cotswolds! Perhaps if we had more than a day we’d have looked for more. With travel, I think there’s always a trade-off. For example, as a former NY’er, I am never surprised that tourists visit Central Park more than Greenacre Park, even though Greenacre Park was my personal favorite spot in midtown. I suppose it was nice to have a spot that felt local-y to me!

You certainly covered a lot of places in one day! Those small roads can be scary but the scenery is really pretty, loved all the autumn colour.
We sure did! I agree, the autumn foliage was pretty amazing, so we were very lucky!
