Everyone at Veloce would like to wish Romain Grosjean a speedy recovery after his horrific accident in the Bahrain Grand Prix. Yesterday showed the world that technology and safety in Formula 1 has come an extremely long way and that we owe our praise to Charlie, Sid, Ian and Allan, along with everyone at the FIA, the track safety workers and marshals. Backseat Driver is a series that showcases the emotions us as Formula 1 fans share whilst watching a Grand Prix. Often these reactions are positive and light hearted towards the entertainment we watch week on week, however as with the case yesterday, the start of the race was far from positive. If you would like to avoid the reactions to Romain's incident, please skip to 4:24
I think i speak for all of us creators when i say this was a difficult one for us to carry on trying to be upbeat and light hearted after that incident, we are all thankful Grosjean is ok ❤️
I think the fact that the universal reaction to Grosjean’s escape was “What the fck” just shows the brilliance of the safety precautions and engineering the sport has adopted recently.
Yeah, this crash was absolutely horrific and still he just jumped out oof the car. Both the fire and him going through the railing could and honestly would have killed him only couple of years ago. Still watching the crash gets my heart beating because it shouln't be a crash you just walk away from. Looking at old crashes that leads to death or severe injury many of them seem to have either fire or something that causes severe head trauma as the cause. And this crash had both of these elements but still he was pretty much unscattered thanks to the halo and fireproof suit. I'm so impressed by alllthe engineering and how they manager to create safer cars. Sure even today with some worse luck or if he had been unconscious or stuck this crash could have ended much worse.
Here are the heroes: FIA, Romain Grosjean, Alpinestars, Alan Van Der Marwe, Doc. Ian Roberts and Doc. Sid Watkins that isn't why us anymore but played a super important role on the safety improvement. Thank you all for making this sport safer. Get well soon Romain ❤
It is so amazing for us "older guys" watching you younger people react so sweetly and with so much concern as we all did. you guys are our future and with you guys our future is in good hands. very nice vid and commentary.
thank god they invented halo... im so happy Romain is ok... and i hope he gets back for his last race in F1... Thank u Allan and Ian as well and all the marshalls on the track... They were so brave to get this close to this huge flames and help Romain... im so happy that the safety of F1 has made such a huge stap forwards with halos and all that stuff... and im sure this would end diffrently if it happned 10 years ago...
grosjean’s crash was so traumatizing that every single subsequent incident, no matter how minor, gave everyone watching chills and you could just tell.
I was literally shaking because you see an explosion like that and you instantly think the worst but to see him pretty much walking well and hes still intact shows that the safety of the halo but also the fireproof outfits that the drivers wear have come so far and saved a drivers life. Everyone that was involved in helping grosjean and fia bringing in these safety precautions need huge appreciation. We may all meme grosjean for the crashes but we never expected him to have this serious of a crash and we still love seeing him racing. Also saw one person on twitter having no sympathy for grosjean and saying that grosjean had no awareness of what was in front, behind and alongside him and that he inflicted it on himself for being a shit driver. Yes he may have gone into kyvat but he was in his blindspot so he couldn't see him then he was also preparing for when the alpha romeo of kimi was gonna return to the track. We also dont know if the racing poits part of front wing hit the wheel that might hindered something a bit more. I just dont get how you can look at that and take away that grosjean caused it and it's his fault that it was that big of crash
I agree with you. Grosjean may have been in crashed that he caused like the one in Belgium in 2011. BUT FOR SOMEONE TO BLAME IT ON HIM IN A CRASH THAT WITHOUT THE HALO COULD’VE KILLED HIM IS ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING. Romain Grosjean was SHAKING, he was scared, he was shocked at the fact that his life would’ve ended if it wasn’t for the halo. If you’re going to check on a crash. PLEASE, check ALL THE ANGLES to investigate more in. It was no one’s fault. Grosjean didn’t see Kvyat. Kvyat didn’t see Grosjean coming. So how can you blame it on Grosjean when he didn’t see it coming and possibly could’ve died. And for those who say that the halo looks ugly on the car. Look at what Sid Watkins said. It was for SAFETY. It wasn’t for decoration it wasn’t for improving sight. It was for safety. The halo sacrificed itself to save Grosjean’s life. Without it, we could’ve lost a driver. If we go back to the tragic death of Jules Bianchi in Japan, 2014. If the halo was introduced there then his liga would’ve been saved. Leclerc would’ve been happy to see him and maybe possibly driven with him. I actually can’t thank enough to the safety car, Ian And Alan Van der Meuuwe, the FIA, F1, and the late Sid Watkins for their work on safety. They actually deserve to be appreciated more.
Thanks for handling it so respectfully I was looking forward to this backseat driver since last night but I was afraid you wouldn't post due to the incident
I had an instant PTSD when I saw this accident, the whole scene of Senna's accident came to mind (yes, I am this old). I don't even remember if I breathed in until Show him coming out of what was left of the car.
Hi Veloce, you know what, I watched Formula 1 since 2005 and I’ve seen some horrific crashes in the past but this one is probably the most scariest and horrifying crash I’ve ever seen, I’m so glad Romain was ok after the crash and huge thank you to the medical car, the marshals, the FIA and the Halo.
I've never been so happy to not watch a race live in my life once I found out Romain was ok. I almost cried watching it on Channel 4, hours later. Memories of incidents past... Get well again soon RG!
I'm not surprised we didn't see Keira's perspective. Not to sound demeaning or whatever it may seem like I'm being, but I imagine she inparticular was unsettled by that crash more than most. If so, I can't say I blame her
@@kami_narisama Well I don't know her so this is just best guess, but I imagine she was probably crying. The rest of this lot held it together even if it was very horrible. But Keira I reckon she probably cried
Me and niran reacted the same, as a new fan that one caught me off guard, at least romain is ok and didn’t end up like the guy from rush at Watkins glen
After the Grosjean & Stroll incident I've never wished for a boring race until them moments! I was just like get out of there with everyone safe please!
I was watching this live when I was supposed to be asleep, I was on my iPad watching it in bed and fucking screamed my head off and immediately opened the Formula 1 Fan Community Discord Channel on the side screen and everyone was shouting their heads off in the chat aswell. That was the scariest moment I have ever seen watching an F1 race live. The next morning, my mum literally cried when she saw the crash on the morning news. The incident was 50-50 fault imo. Well done to every marshal, the FIA medical team and thank god that Romain is all good ❤🙌
I had a feeling about that race, sounds stupid when its a super wide and safe track, but idk i got a bad gut feeling before the race...and when the crash happened i said...hes gone...no way he was out of it..thank god
The mental thing was seeing the HALO after bouncing a steel barrier at 100+ MPH. The carbon fairing a bit scuffed and charred, fuck all else. If a piece of equipment could talk you can just imagine it going "Barrier? What barrier?"
As much as he's not my favorite driver, I was relieved to see Romain was okay considering the circumstances. When I saw a car hitting the barrier, and the fireball, my first thought was, that someone just died...
Why are people so scared of the incident even now? Grosjean is going to be ok... I know that it looked really bad but he's largely fine... I'm not trying to seem tough I'm actually curious
