- This is how I make endcaps out of resin that fit 3 x 4 vinyl downspouts found at most home improvement centers. These can be affixed to the downspouts that have been cut to size with silicone caulk. Drill holes, fill with hydroponic nutrients and you are all set.

I worked a lot with two-part epoxy resin, both for tabletop gaming and jewelry making, and I love your approach to this. I cannot emphasize enough that the resin for this needs to be a non-toxic variety meant for things like countertops and such. There are lots of resins out there, and many of them will leech toxins into liquids over time. Also avoid any polyester resins as those with absolute do a number on your lungs just working with them, even if you're outside.
Thank you for sharing that Mr Dancy Pants!
I'm in a green house re-build right now when I start my re-start on setting up I will definitely be adding your system to the systems I already have working for me, you rock Mike all your ideas are much more attainable than the normal hydroponic systems, hydroponic is not cheap but it can be if your thinking out of the box and not wanting a plug and play system.
We old hippies always freely share skill and knowledge so all can prosper, I admire you and your sharing in spirit of the old hippies.
Great video and great information.
Thanks
Rock on Robin! Hippies unite!
Very Cool...I would suggest cosidering using an old window pane glass or an old mirror...the surface is smooth and non porous when cleand...I used a glass pane and mirror when making artistic Acrylic and Vynal paint peels for my DIY art projects...I absolutely love you impregnating the molds with decorative items like the gears you used and the thermometer...A Very Nice and Unique Touch....Thanks Mike.
Thanks much Felix!!
I think it’s great that you share how to do stuff, even if it competes with what you sell.
Thank you, I really appreciate that. We all need to eat and pay bills but I think it is worth it if I can help some people along the way. That's priceless. Have an awesome weekend.
This is the BEST channel!! Thank you for sharing some of your wins and losses in creating your system.
Thank you! I am so glad you find it helpful ☺. Have an awesome weekend.
Thank you for being so complete with your instructions🙂
Wow. I watched your vids a couple months back, and you are still progressing. Impressive. And I appreciate how you share even your newest ideas right down to how to do it ourselves. Thanks a lot
Awesome Mike! You have another great video! If you want to get more bubbles out, touch the side of the mold with an electric toothbrush.
Thanks, that's a great tip!
A blow dryer will bring the bubbles to the top too.
I make resin jewelry for a hobby. If you take kitchen wax paper and lay it down the resin won't stick to it and it leaves a clean look when removed. Hope that helps💜
Thanks much!
Your ideas & instructions are awesome. Great videos too!!!
My mom played the house of raising sun on her accordion. I miss her…. She could rock an organ as well and sing…. Really getting into learning your system, my second attempt. I have to get the "jist and skill" thanks for teaching
Hang in there Barbara.
Mike- you are a great problem solver!
Thank you Jeannie!
I was curious of how you made these end caps, and it just so happens to like up with one of my other hobbies. If you added baking powder/baking soda, one wouldn't have to add nearly as much mica powder to block light ☺️.
wouldn't light sanding on the inside of the downspout end help the resin set better and stronger? Works well when I'm doing epoxy work on my sailboats. Smooth surfaces have difficulty holding adhesives and resins unless the resin is reactive to the surface or I sand with find grit first. Curious about your experience in making these. Thanks.
Make a mold of the end cap that your friend has been making. But extend the bottom part by about 4", that way you can stack them on top of each other using resin
Mike be careful to not breathe in mica powers wear a mask 😷 great job 👏🏼♥️. Best resin ever is “StoneCoat Countertops” they are here on UA-cam
Hey making end caps with small cheap level devices in them would help when setting up you don't have to find a level.
Cool tip!
Great Work Mike, it's amazing how you come up with so many different ways to make things. 🤗
I use Isopropyl alcohol spray on Resin Bubbles & Homemade Soap surface Bubbles, stinks but disappears. Lol..
TFS KOG, & take care too everyone. ❤🙂🐶
Awesome! Thanks for the tip!!
@@KeepOnGrowin Your very Welcome Mike. 👍🤗❤🙂🐶
A hair dryer will also bring the bubbkes to the surface.
@@ceselifred4241 Ooh Yes, good idea. Thanks Ceseli. 👍🤗
Howdy Mike! Fascinating video and such interesting ideas. Thank you for sharing.
I may have missed a detail. Did you say we would need silicon to glue the finished resin caps into the ends?
Do we need to follow up with a line of silicon even when pouring directly into the downspout as well? Or do those stay in on their own with no further attachment fixative?
I appreciate your sharing, as well as selling. I bought some of your first end cap covers, but never got around to using them yet. That just goes to show that even the easiest methods may compete with daily life and time constraints. Sometime its best to let someone else do it.
And now you have another amazing technique. I can't help but laugh and enjoy the learning process and all the brilliant outcomes! Cheers!
Lol, I know you will get around to it! Have fun, that's important. The end caps will stick when you first pour directly into the downspout. For how long they will last, I don't know. The first ones I did are still holding up with no extra silicone. They have been through 2 crops.
I got so excited and ordered a bunch of materials to start building these, but I literally cannot find a 3"x4" vinyl downspout. The closet one is 2 states away and Home Depot won't ship it. Lowes doesn't carry it either. Help! Has anyone found the vinyl downspout in Utah?
Does it really matter if it's level. Since just want to make sure it plugs the hole.
I think what you’re doing for the end caps are very nice but I think it’s more complicated than it needs to be. I will try using a router to make the original PVC cap fit snugly together and see if that works better.
Some people do not have power tools. This was just to help them. I made some on a CNC machine, hardly anyone has those.
House of the rising sun cool
Would a little rectangle of plexiglass siliconed to the exterior of the gutter work as well?
Yes
how long do it take from little sprout Basel to eatable_?
Hey Mike! I have metal downspouts I was given. Can I use those? What can I do for endcaps?
You will have to experiemnt with one. I don't know how hot it will get during the heat of the day.
Have you thought about adding "Electro Culture" to the mix? I just came upon it recently before I found you.
Cool 🤩 Do you sell the molds for the end caps.
I'm sorry, not anymore.
What product(s) did you use for the blue, rubber moulds? Maybe start selling them as well?
This is what I used: amzn.to/3cp23gu
I did sell the molds for a few weeks to help people out, but the product is quite expensive.
Mike, are you still selling the molds? I am trying to get this going as my son has a biology experiment with hydroponics and I can’t even get lettuce to sprout. Please let me know. Thanks.
I stopped selling them for now until I get caught up with the endcap orders. Make sure the temp is not too high for the lettuce to germinate.
Hey mike, what’s the music you used?
I made it. House of the Rising Sun is public domain. I found a midi and added the instruments. Just a quickie I did one night, going to refine it more when I get time.
@@KeepOnGrowin Wow that’s awesome! Is there no end to your talents?
Be sure to use food safe epoxy
How big are those downspouts? They look like 3"x4".
Correct
@@KeepOnGrowin k we can't get those in Canada or I haven't been able to find any yet.
Is a 2 inch by 3 inch downspout big enough to work. It’s all I can find locally. I am concerned there wont be enough space for fluid plus air gap and a bit of pool noodle. Could I do it on its side, 3 inches high and only 2 inches across? I really want to give this a try.
I started with the 2x3. The only problems are they are thinner and allow algae growth, you have to fill them more often and they can tip as your plants get bigger.
Why bother with end cap moulds? Just stand cut downspout on end and pour directly into downspout. After curing, flip and pour through side holes for other end cap.
Guess you covered that idea later 😊
Parafilm paper will probably work well to seal ends for pouring resin without leaving a texture or sticking - not sure of cost vs mentioned release tape.
Why not just put clear tape on the inside of the cut downspouts, pour in the resin & let harden. The resin should just come out once dried.
You can try. It sticks pretty good to clear tape.
I've used masking tape before w/resin to contain it in its area & it wrks well.
@@ceselifred4241 query: the way he uses the wood board with the tape on it to pour directly into the downspout,... are you suggesting to put the tape instead across the opening of the cut end of the downspout, and pouring directly in? Would that remove the need for the poster tack to hold it in?
@@Metqa yes, but use masking tape instead of clear. I suggested using the clear tape on the inside of the downspout so the resin doesn't stick to the inside & you wouldn't have to cut the downspout.
Nevermind, don't use masking tape.
very nice idea however the resin is a chemical and I think will leach chemicals in the water which will be taken by the plants...
There is food safe casting resin out there. Not certain that all plastics don't leach something out though.
Yes, the manufacturer says after it cures it is food safe. It is in a vinyl downspout that goes on the side of your house.
@@KeepOnGrowin I was referring to the resin caps...resin is not food safe...unless there is a different brand that sells it with the label for food safe...I will love to know that information. thanks Mike
The Craft Resin brand does say food safe. I was wondering why the concern when the downspouts are not considered food grade. amzn.to/3RcDj9N
If people are worried about a little line or imperfection they need to find something else to do.
I got lost in the details
Whatcha need?
