In 1979, my dad purchased a Grundig Studio 3010 music centre. It was new old stock from 1976 so he got it on the cheap. Predictably enough, it came with a whole swathe of Grundig sales brochures (even the one for in-car audio) and I remember this radio from one of those brochures.
I've never encountered one in the flesh but the 10 year old me saw it as a glittering prize! Even the game shows on telly didn't have anything this good as a prize, it wasn't a radio for mere mortals. This was a radio for legends! You could even plug in a turntable and use it as an amp! They'd thought of everything...
Beaten down over the years by such real-world considerations as financial constraints and an obsession with the acquisision and repair of cruddy old hi-fi gear, thoughts of the shimmering Satellite were pushed firmly to the back of my mind.
Imagine therefore, my suprise and delight when I opened You Tube today, unsuspecting that these decades-old thoughts would be re-awakened!
This is the latest of several absolute must-see series you've put out. I know you'll get this radio back on top form and I can't wait to see that! Except, obviously I will have to wait...

These are in fact great radios. Just out of curiosity I looked up the original sale price (it was actually DM 1400), and factored in an inflation calculation. The price today is in the order of €2000. Quite an investment, so not taken lightly. Back then these radios were bought to last, and cost a lot of money. Today all that has changed, with ‘disposable’ equipment being the norm, so these are even more treasured by hooks like us 😊

Manuel, finally you got one - you´ll have fun with it´s restoration. A hint: Weak AM reception may be caused by the bandwidth switch (3 settings). I had to unsolder and open this switch manually because contact cleaner didn´t help. The preowner didn´t use this switch for decades because he didn´t know what this is for .... OMG.

Thanks Stefan. I’ll keep that in mind. Many of the functions on older equipment suffered from that problem - don’t know what it is, so don’t touch 😊

I just managed to get hold of a Satellit 3400. I was originally a bit daunted by the length of your videos and wondered if I was going to be able to get mine working adequately. It was very cheap and sold as untested. When it arrived yesterday it had the usual array of broken switches and missing knobs and was pretty dirty. It was totally dead initially and I found the sliding contacts adjacent to the power lead were not contacting properly. Once I understood what they were doing I managed to get it to power on. None of the bulbs were lighted but that is not a problem provided the access is not too hidden away. I was really delighted to have it running at pretty good volume on FM and after studying your videos and fiddling with the switches I managed to get the frequency counter and AM to work. This was much more than I expected. I have bought a 2000, 2100 and now the 3400. The sound of all of them is really great and the 3400 seems to have the best sound. I now have a nice project ahead of me to strip the switches and clean them and give the case a really good clean. The secret to success with these old radios seems to be getting hold of rather tatty ones that have not had anyone digging around inside them. None of mine seem to have been opened up for years if ever. Thanks again for your guidance. I now have many happy hours looking at your videos on the 3400. John

      Hi John
I’m happy to hear that my videos have come in handy. That is precisely the idea of my posting those long reports, in the hope that they will serve as a source of valuable hints and info for anyone wanting to undertake a similar project. It is difficult to actually assist anyone doing a project personally, due to time and memory constraints, so I try and put everything out there in the videos when I’m doing the restoration itself.
Good luck with yours. It’s a great radio, and well worth the effort.

I have now had some time to look at the likely cuprits for losing wavebands on my 3400. I have today tacked the middle switch was I know dirty and I took the board out like you did and then removed the switch and disassembled it and cleaned it. I also cleaned the turret short wave connections. Now everything works!! I have good volume in all bands and no crackling. The FM particularly is great and I think nothing needs to be done. I still have some switches that need new levers and can be easily remedied. The sound is magnificent and I think the components, particularly the capacitors are good quality and I am not inclined to change them. I found my 2100 had similarly good components and works really well and I didn't renew any capacitors. The 2000 was a different kettle of fish. The capacitors were the plastic cased ones Orange and dark red. One had no reading and had leaked all over the place. I am so grateful to you. John

I purchased a Grundig Satellit 2100 about 2 years ago for £40 and it worked first time. Had to buy a missing telescopic antenna £20, plastic battery box cover for £6, dial display bulbs for £4. In all, I think it was worth it, because it is a great radio. I had been looking at the Grundig Satellit 3400, which does look great, having a digital frequency readout. The circuit for the 2 models are quite similar for the amplifier and power supply. As you mentioned the Grundig Satellit 3400 is expensive and hard to find. I will follow your progress on this radio and see if it will encourage me to buy one.

Some notes on my repair of a 3400: That 4700 uF is known to short...so it is better to replace it even if it is ok. This radio has a lot of these blue Philips electrolytics which are generally not that great. One of them completely killed FM on mine. Hope you get yours working perfectly again. 👍

Perfect timing! 🙂 I have 3 of these wonderful "beasts" waiting to be repaired. (1 only for parts, 1 in good condition and one somewhere in between). I'm eagerly awaiting your video series. 😄 If the radio is operating on mains power, the counter switch can be left in the top position and shows the LED frequency counter. On battery, it is either off (0) or can be pushed in the lower position to turn the LED on temporarily to save power.
I had in both of the functional radios big problems with the 5V converter due to bad caps.

@@electronicsoldandnew Yes, that's what I plan as well. Unfortunately, in one of the 5V converter, the transistor heated up the surroundings and destroyed the printed circuit as well. This 5V converter is located in a roundish metal casing inside the square metal box in which the frequency counter is located. It's a bit of a pain to solder it out but if it fails, nothing is working correctly.

      @@electronicsoldandnew Hi Manuel!
I have the original printed Schematic which I scanned and assembled into one big jpg file.
I also have other explaining graphics which I think are in better quality what you have.
(Especially the one for the tuning order.)
I also made photos of the inside of the frequency counter box. As you guessed, there are more things inside not just the counter logic. In the 5V converter which I mentioned above and which is located in a heavily shielded box inside this box are unfortunately 3 Roederstein caps. As you know from your other projects, these are most of the time broken. (On the photos you can see what damage my converter had.)
I couldn't find any email or contact address of yours so I uploaded the zip file to my server and created a tiny URL:
      tinyurl.com/3z54arhm
In the file are 2 PDFs, 9 PNGs and 11 JPGs.
I hope this helps a bit on your project. If you are doing the video on the capacitor replacement maybe you could give some advice which brand of capacitors should be used. This is my first radio repair project and I don't have any experience so your videos are my masterclass. When you shut it down with the power switch, that circuit to empty the filtercap through 18Ω is activated, so I think thats why it looks like a short when powering down. It is about the way you just alternatively power it.

The big problem nowadays is that when people find something ”old”, or looking old in their attic, they think they found the 7th wonder of the world and they ask insane money for it. When everyone begin to act like that, thenmarket gets completely biased to the point even a non-working pile of crap from the eighties that practically needs a total overhaul gets sold like if it was a lamborghini countach. Not saying this particular radio is crap, far from that but you get the point. People are just too greedy and also so very dumb in general.

One quick question: so many of these 3400's have grey, smoky plastic windows. It looks as though you have something of this sort with yours. Were you able to bring them back to being clear again or is the smokiness internal to the acrylic and therefore not restorable?
