    Hi Ed, my filter is still doing a great job, thanks for recommending.
    How often would you change the Phosless cartridges?
    Are they any good in your opinion?
    My local Koi dealer said it’s a bit of a gimmick and, due to the expense, swap them out for a bag of Alfagrog, what are your thoughts?

      Hi Paul, great to hear that your new filter is doing a good job on your pond! I have to say I agree regarding the cartridges- any adsorption properties they have would only last a matter of weeks, a couple of months at best and then they would need to be either re-charged (which can be done in a salt water solution) or replaced. Personally I just leave them as they are- although their use as a phosphate and ammonia remover will stop the material used in the baskets still has its uses as a biological filter media and will harbour beneficial bacteria. Should you wish to replace this media- rather then alfagrog I’d use a ceramic media/sintered glass media which will have a larger surface area for maximum biological filtration.
      Hope this helps!

    I have inherited a pond with a screenmatic2 4000. I noticed that the sponges are connected to a plastic channel with runs along the bottom of the filter and into the separating plate. There is a cap on the end of some of these channels, blocking the flow. Is this cap supposed to be underneath the separating plate or at the back end of the filter?

    • @CrystalClearAquatics
      @CrystalClearAquatics  8 місяців тому

      Morning! Thanks for watching and commenting and in answer to your question; these rectangular blanking end caps should be fitted at the opposite end to the separating plate, ie at the end closest to the discharge/purge valve. Positioning them the other way around underneath the separating plate would simply prevent free passage of water from the dirtier filter foam section to the slightly cleaner filter outlet side of the filter and prevent efficient filtration and flow. I have found that over time these blanking plugs become loose and it becomes easier for the flow of water to push them out entirely, leaving the channel ends fully open. This is not ideal as it means water can enter these channels and ultimately reach the filter return by by-passing the filter foams and this obviously compromises filtration massively. A good modification if the caps are loose and not fitting tightly is to wrap a few layers of electrical tape around the ‘foot’ of the blanking plug, before pushing it into position, creating a much tighter fitting plug. Hope this helps and makes sense!

    Great vid. I am about to buy one of these. It will be about 6m away from the pond and the return pipe will have to go underground and then up again to return in the pond. Would I be ok reducing the 110 pipe to two inch at the filter end or should I go 110 all the way and reduce at the pond? Appreciate any advice you can give. Paul.

      Good morning! Great choice of filter-I’m a fan of these! The distance you’re placing the filter from the pond is absolutely fine, no issues there, however I’d highly recommend you don’t reduce any aspect of the dn110 outlet pipe across any of its length. Reducing any section down to 50mm/2” will cause potential outflow backup problems, resulting in a possible overflow and catastrophic leak from the filter!! Remember gravity discharge outlet flow volume is always slower then forced pump fed inlets, which is why the outlet on gravity filters is always either much larger then the inlet, or there are multiple smaller outlets. Depending on the flow rate of your filter pump you MAY be able to reduce down to a 3”/dn70 pipe-I have done this without issue, BUT only as the pump flow rates were equivalent to that of the recommended flow rates expressed on Oases website for the smaller filter model that used dn70 as its outlet pipe size. Hope this makes sense and good luck!

      @@CrystalClearAquatics thanks for the reply. I thought that might be the case so I’ll go with a long run of 110, and if I do reduce it at the pond I’ll split and use 2 x 50mm, will that be ok? For the 110, would standard soil pipe be ok? I can’t find a clear OD for DN110, some suggest it’s not actually 110mm. Sorry for the ramble, hope it makes sense. Paul

      @@paulallott9338 Hi Paul, that should be ok-although even splitting the outlet to two 2” discharges will cause a small amount of water friction at the connector, but I shouldn’t imagine you’ll have any issues-try to make the split a Y rather then a T as this will cause less friction/restriction. Standard 4” soil pipe is fine-I frequently use this and much cheaper then Oase’s own! The only disadvantage-if it can be called that-is standard soil pipe tends to be brown and the only black pipe I can find is Oase’s own, but if it’s buried that’s not an issue!!! Evolution aqua make some fantastic rubber connectors (eazy connector) in 4” that make connecting 4” pipe a breeze. There’s various straight, 90 degree and 45 degree fittings that I regularly use when installing 4” pipe work.

      @@CrystalClearAquatics Thanks Ed, really appreciate you taking the time to respond. Here’s what I’m ordering:
      Oase Screenmatic 2 90000 (Would consider the 140000)
      Oase Bitron Eco 120 W UVC
      Oase pump to suit. Can you recommend a model? I currently have an All Pond Solutions max flow 12000L/H so wondering whether I should give that a try first to save a bit of cash?

    Hi Ed would be interested in your opinions on the filtration capabilities of this filter compared to the filtoclear range by oase ?

    • @CrystalClearAquatics
      @CrystalClearAquatics  2 роки тому +1

      Hi there Luke, thanks for your comment; I love the filtoclear range of filters and for many ‘average garden pond’ installations they are a fantastic unit. However theres no comparison in terms of filtration efficiency- in my opinion the screenmatic2 systems are leagues ahead and would ‘out filter’ a filtoclear in every way way except for installation discretion- the filtoclear being pressurised can be buried/positioned lower then mean pond level (or cascade level) and retain the pressure of your pond pump, making installation an easy process. The filtomatic2 systems are pump fed gravity discharge and so have to be positioned with the outlet higher then pond level, which could make installation a little harder for some. The screenmatic2 units are physically much larger, with the obvious benefits that an increase in filter media surface area entails. Obviously you should be considering overall pond volume and stocking density/what sort of fish you’ll be keeping when considering your filtration system. One big (financial) advantage is the filtoclear systems come with an integrated uvc- something that would have to be purchased separately with the screenmatic2 systems.
      Hope this helps!

      @@CrystalClearAquatics thanks for the detailed reply I’ve been looking into these filters for a while and from what I can see they seem to be about the best “all rounder” pump fed filter you can buy at a reasonable price 👍🏻

    • @CrystalClearAquatics
      @CrystalClearAquatics  2 роки тому +1

      @@lukemichael7772 agreed- they are a good unit, although I’m not sure I class them as ‘reasonably priced’ !!(sorry Oase!) they have their flaws (albeit minor) and its very important that you keep on top of keeping the screen mesh clean-its surprising how much a dirty clogged screen can then compromise the rest of the filter- but overall I highly rate them and regularly use them in many of my installations.
      Good luck with your install!

      Hi there! The pump for the vast majority of my installations are simply submersible units that sit in the pond and deliver water from there to the filtration system.

    Good but annoying when your not showthe basics ie they all pump fed can they work on gravity systems size of inlets outlets can it be connected to bottom drain also would have been nice to have a camara shot of pond and pond water could be chocolate brown for all we know,,

      bo jo ah ha, but then the name of the video would have been “ Oase screenmatic2 Installation” or some such title and not simply “screenmatic2 filter clean”, which as the name suggests, is simply a reference to how to clean the filter!! If you’d like to see details on how clean the pond is with these two units operating please watch “So you fancy a pond?!...” and the first of the three ponds is the one being filtered by these systems. Lovely and clear as you’ll see!!
      As for set up-these are pump fed gravity discharge-2” inlet (will take smaller hose) and a 4” outlet. These systems aren’t designed as a gravity fed system so not to be used in conjunction with a bottom drain. Technically possible, but no benefit of doing so.
