- Enjoy these gorgeous full color home movies shot by a lucky couple who traveled on the SS France Eastbound, and the SS Liberte Westbound, here combined to suggest a mythical time when such a trip might have been possible. Bon Voyage!
RIP beautiful France! Another gorgeous liner is being destroyed..I wish there was such a ting as time travel! What an awesome video
Thanks for the memories! I traveled west on the SS Liberte in Nov. 1953. Glad someone got it on film! We didn't own a camera back then!
The most sophisticated liner to date i reckon. A triumph of naval engineering, well next to the Normandie.
I have just gotten led to your videos.. Superb!!! I admire your talent and skill. Thanks for sharing them. Im so taken back by how well dressed everyone is onboard.. No sweat pants, no t-shirts no jeans.. Ah the good old days..
Great to see video of the old ship. I sailed on her as a boy from New York to France in June and returned July 1961. I believe '61 was her last year of service and she was scrapped in Italy in 1962. It was a great adventure and seeing the views from the funnels and at the stern brings back wonderful boyhood memories. Thanks so much for posting these.
Glad you like! The music is from "Around the World with Santo & Johnny" and the song is "Around the World in 80 Days". And by the way, I'm impressed!
Well as a boy I must have met him... I sailed 4 times on the SS France, I have a scar on my forhead from an accident in the pool in 1965 I think, a day after a grand storm around Newfoundland... the swell came from behind, I was in the pool (2nd class) and got whacked against the side. There were some 58 people with broken bones and other injuries from the storm. Planes just don't cut it for me.... I think I cried when I heard she was decomissioned.
Very nice! The ship still exist today as S/S Norway...
SS France was later sold to norway and name was changed to SS Norway....
Hey, that's the SS AMERICA in the background at the beginning! ;;;Gasp;;; And the RMS QUEEN MARY in Southampton at 2:00!!!
One of my favoUrite videos of yours!
I came over on this ship in 1953 from Germany
awsome!
@SuperTitanicfreak Beg to differ. The SS United States was the perfect ocean liner! By the way, all comments are moderated, so you needn't post multiple times, thanks.
Of course, it's just that there's also footage of the France.
@SuperTitanicfreak no worries, but in the ongoing evolution of ocean liner design, the "Big U" really was the pinnacle. The best design to do what a liner was supposed to do... deliver her passengers with safety, speed and style. Always happy to agree to disagree!
@Daewooverbrenner It's Santo & Johnny performing "Around the World in 80 Days" Hope this helps!
@Daewooverbrenner Glad you like!
yes what other ship is there,I thought this was the Liberte
I assume you mean the Liberte? :)
as i am german this ship is more famous here as europa, and i am 23 now so i did not have a chance to experiance one of the great liners :-/
wasnt it weird to be on one of nazi germanys earlier flagliners
