For those wondering: the crunching chewing nose he is making when grinding his teeth is "bruxing" and when his eyes look like they're bouncing up and down, that is "boggling"...
Both are signs a rat is very happy and content. It's like purring and snuggling from a cat.

@@sellbydate LOL! Even though rats are not normally eaten by people, rats are still part of the food chain. By nature, ALL animals, especially referring to those in the wild, are part of the food chain. This means that somewhere, an animal is going to be eaten by either another animal, or by a human being. Humans (for the most part) are at the top of the food chain. 🍀
As for certain farm animals (such as cows), a few of them do get lucky enough to be converted into pets... especially at farm sanctuaries. 🐮🐓🐐🐏

@@sellbydate Sure! I realize now that I should have worded it a little differently. What I meant to say is, there are some animals that were *_destined_* to be pets (it was in that particular animal's destiny, such as John Smith's pet rats). I wasn't referring to only certain types animals, such as dogs and cats. I was referring to any animal, in general. _That's why I brought up farm animals, as an example, in my comment to you._ Sometimes people make them into pets, even though they aren't traditionally seen as pets. I hope this clears things up for you. 😃

The only downside to having a pet rat is that their lives are so short. Anyone who has had a rat will tell you that they are so capable of love and so extremely intelligent. It's sad that an animal with so much intelligence and big personalities do not have longer lives! I still have a rat shaped hole in my heart from losing my rat Lydia years later. I agree. Ice Cube looks like a Dumbo rat, which is a heavily domesticated breed. They are sweet and mellow and would not be able to survive in the wild. Humans seem to think we can just domesticate any animal, but when we get bored of them, we think we can just throw them out again. Maybe that’s the case for snakes, which is why we have such a huge problem with invasive snakes in Florida.

The day I decided to set him free I just couldn't do It. The odds were against him from glue traps, mice traps, poison and the cold winter. He had no friends but me. Squeaks has brought me great joy and I thank my cat constantly for this wonderful gift. Who keeps a caught house mouse as a pet....Guilty as charged. I love him just as much as you loved Ice Cube. Pet rats differ from wild rats in a few ways.
Rat breeding is not even 200 years old, arose from the interest of pied catchers to learn more about their "prey".
Over the years, those that were less aggressive/shy towards humans were chosen for breeding, leading to the pet rat.
Unlike wild rats, pet rats are extremely tame, even in the absence of human contact.
Likewise, they are no longer afraid of light, and are also very active during the day.
Basically, any species can be domesticated.
It only depends on the will and the necessary time, since domestication takes place via reproductive selection (animals with particularly favorable behavior are deliberately crossed with each other, this takes time, since this process takes place over many generations).

I love my rats and they love me right back. Btw, having rats in the home keeps the real (wild) pests away, haven't had any rodents coming up in here since they've been around😉. One day I was outside taking photos in a railway yard, when suddenly I saw a rat playing with a crow, which I thought was interesting. Then, the rat ran towards me and up my leg. I was shocked, but I knew then that it was domesticated. I advertised everywhere looking for his owner. Nobody came forward. I was able to keep him for two weeks before I left on vacation. "Nosey" was so cute and loving. He loved sitting on my shoulder and chattering in my ear. I wasn't allowed pets in my building so I ended up having to give him to the SPCA. I'm glad I was the one who found him. I miss him! 🐀

I had a outdoor pet rat. I named him ratty boy, he had a deformed tail. He waited for me to feed him every night at my bird feeder. He allowed me to pet him. I had him for 2 years. One day, he never came back 😪. All living creatures deserve a chance to be cared for and fed. I leave large bowls of water outside for the animals. I throw out all leftovers for possums and raccoons. In the morning, all food is gone. Please be kind 🙂🤗😇

My younger daughter wanted a pet rat for years and I was always like ‘ugh, no gross’. Then last august I caved and we got Sirius. He is the literal BEST. We all love him so much, he’s so smart, sweet and cuddly. He completely changed my views on rats and I’m so glad we got him and I can’t imagine our house without a pet rat now! LOL, my mom was the same way with all my rodents. She would reluctantly allow them (she grew up without pets, didn't want her children going through the same thing), but never touched them or anything. Well, my smart trained rat Pogo would go downstairs, climb the cabinets, and get into the Cheerios. Guess who was in the box when my mom went for a bowl? LOL, she SCREAMED bloody murder and out came Pogo just as cute as cute could be with Cheerio dust all over her, and my mom just laughed. She didn't know rats could be so sweet and naughty at the same time.

I went through something similar. I was saving up for pet gerbils and was calling pet stores to see where the closest place they were being sold at was. The one place I called, the guy said, "Well, we don't have any gerbils. But we have rats!" And I felt a certain way about rats, pretty similar to your views actually, lol. I told my mom and she said, "Maybe you should get rats instead?" But... still, lol. I didn't want rats.
Well, we visited the pet store to get some supplies. The rats were in the cage, and the shop keeper let me hold one... I was so endeared, we took two of them home the same day. I've had them for a week and a half, and even though they are still adjusting and have had a few mishaps here and there, I love them. They really changed my perspective on the species. They're already so friendly and curious, I can't wait until they become more confident with their surroundings. They are simply the cutest.
