Being an owner and my mum having a Mini, I think my A1 has more of a presence on the road and they get more looks as there's a Mini on every street corner.
We have these at work, petrol and diesel, and I really dont like the diesel one its quite noisy. The 1.4 petrol is just brilliant though, really fast when you want it to be and very quiet and happy to cruise around. Thats the one I would have.

i drove one of these last month in the diesel configuration... now its a good car but i just really hated the driving characteristics of it completely it was weird

It has been ten years, but yes. The A1 is sector leading when it comes to a soft & comfy drive, so if you live in a place with lots of cobblestones, uneven & rough roads then getting the S-lIne basically cancels out the advantage the A1 has. It will make it slightly more fun to throw into corners and bends on nice country roads, but the gains are marginal compared to losses.
Great, thorough review, although a tad mean about the back seats as I'm 6ft exactly and have no problem at all sitting in the back of mine. Leg room is abundant and although headroom is limited, it is ample enough for me which should be ample for most, given my height
