    Hi Jenny. I ran across your channel when I was looking at other medical school videos. I am very glad I came across your channel because I am currently trying to become a doctor. I applied to only MD schools last year, but didn't get in anywhere (I'm a non trad). When I applied I was still under the impression that there is a strong bias for MDs to further specialize and i am very interested in doing a surgical specialty. I am now going to reapply to schools this year, and will be applying to MD and DO schools. Your channel has explained the DO school curriculum and experience much better and I am now more open to whatever may be. Your channel has further solidified my idea that I can do whatever I want as a DO or an MD. The end goal is the same -- I will be a doctor, I will be treating patients, and I will be making a difference. So thank you!

    Hi Jenny, Congratulating!!!!!😄
    I absolutely enjoy watching your videos. I was wondering if you would ever think about making a video, talking about what it is like to have rotations in family medicine. In detail like what you do, the hours, and the experience in general. As well as, what you did when you shadowed an O.D physician before medical school. Thank You.

    • @drjennale
      @drjennale  7 років тому

      +Sofia Hernandez Thank you so much! I will definitely try to make a more in depth video about family medicine. It's just somewhat difficult because you can do so many different things as an FM doc depending on what type of practice you belong to. Example private practice will differ from FM Internest, will differ from those working in groups.

    Hey Jenny . First of all Congrats on ur matching : ) . And u are so right about Surgery! it just hit me that I was only interested about the superficial suturing rather than opening up the abdomen or anything . For a while I was wondering if I should do vascular surgery as I got a chance in my college to assist in it . but now that I think about it it's just the hands on thing I like but not really into the whole aspect of surgery as whole . Thank u so much for enlightening Me !! :D I have been struggling for the past 3-4 yrs about this decision regarding surgery . And u gave me a new idea about Family medicine which I never thought off all this while as my mind was clouded with surgery! Thanks a lot really ! And I think the same as well regarding having a life other my career like family and travel and FooD of course :p I'm so happy I came across ur video randomly checking for how to choose speciality ! I would like to know more about family medicine from ur future videos :)

    i'm a couple days late, but I just discovered your channel and I really appreciate everything you've shared!
    i'm in nursing school now, and but I find myself being drawn into medicine. I love that nursing is centered around patient care, and doctors focus more on the medicine. Can you explain that a little more? shouldn't all of healthcare be patient centered?
    my speciality doctor is a d.o. and it's fantastic that its more holistic-- exactly what i'm looking for. if you had any recommendations or advice for nurses going into medicine, specifically d.o. programs, please share your thoughts!

    Hi Jenni! When you said you are those person who enjoy medicine but also their family, I saw myself in you. In my case, I am 24 and just finished my bachelor in Bio. I will apply next year. But Iam having troubles choosing btw med school and PA. I love medicine but I don't see myself spending most of my time as a doctor instead of having a good time with my family. And I am also afraid to lose interest in the speciality. I am not sure about what area I love the most. Becoming a doctor is a long and sacrificed path. I would like to ask why did you choose becoming a doctor instead of a PA if both can do the same thing and PA have the flexibility of working in different areas of medicine. I will appreciate your advice. :)

    I can relate to your feelings about surgery. I have always thought that I want to go into surgery because I like working with my hands too. But I also want to be able to have a life outside of medicine. I was also concerned about applying to DO schools if I wanted to be a surgeon. I have also considered dermatology, but I guess I'll have to see once I go to med school.

    • @drjennale
      @drjennale  7 років тому +1

      +Brice Bouffard There are a lot of sub specialties of surgery like ophthalmology (which has a pretty clutch lifestyle) - those are things you'll just have to look into. And as long as you do well in med school, score high on board exams, you should have no concerns.

    Hey Jenny! I'm totally with you regarding the whole idea of wanting to do preventative care, wanting to have continuity with patients, and just going with primary care. I'm a first year med student (MD), and I'm in love with Ob-Gyn, but the parts that excite me are more the embryology, the preventative care, the women's health. I want to use some type of primary care abroad in Asia to the community that matters to me most, and I'm just trying to find my options. I also love IM, ophthalmology, and EM. But just so many options.
    Thanks for sharing your story and your thoughts on everything! I can't wait to get past these first few years and get to my clinicals to actually get some hands on practice. Any thoughts, suggestions or advice you can give a 1st year?

    Congratulations on your specialty! You are going to do great things! How did you realize what specialties you really liked? I am also really interested in general surgery, but I want to broaden my horizon and see what specialties there are before I set my mind fully on surgery. However I find it really hard to imagine what other specialties would suit me because I always imagined becoming a surgeon. And there are a lot of specialties that I find interesting, but I can not always see myself doing that for the rest of my life. And I was wondering if you have some tips for me to help me 'broaden my horizon'?

    • @drjennale
      @drjennale  7 років тому

      +Margaux Van Maele I asked my school to schedule all the rotations that I thought I may be interested in earlier on during the year. This way it allowed me to really figure out what I wanted earlier on, or at least rule out specialties. You really just have to immerse yourself in the speciality before you really know.

    As a DO student, I feel like there is this lurking denial that students just "fell in love with family medicine" or "decided IM is where they would get to where they want to be" and it freaks me out because I KNOW I want to go into trauma surgery. I worked on a med/surge unit for 5 years. I have followed pts all the way from diagnosis to surgery to recovery over multiple grueling night shifts and I still want to do it. Statistically though, that's not how it goes down with DO matches. 80% of the students go into primary care and a select few specialize. I find it impossible to believe ALL of the students going into PC actually WANT to be there when the numbers are so heavily skewed compared to what students say they want ALL throughout med school. It just adds a huge element of anxiety when it genuinely feels like people aren't being honest about how happy they are with their match results.

    Congratulations I'm so happy for you and I'm so proud that females are being matched to those residences. I'm going to a medical school in Ethiopia but we don't have the specialty that I want in the country and I'm really confused about what to do when I'm done with Medical School because I don't want to go for anything that is available instead of doing what I love😪

    I get why you didn't chose the other two but could you explain why you chose family? Is it because you get to have a life? And after you're done with your rotations and chose one, you have go get accepted into it? What do you have to do to ensure you get accepted? BTW Congrats! Sorry for so many questions!

    • @drjennale
      @drjennale  7 років тому +2

      +Afghan Girl I chose family medicine because I wanted a specialty where I had continuity of care. Where I was able to build a patient doctor relationship. I also wanted a specialty where I am able to use OMT. And family medicine gave me enough variety so I wasn't bored. If I wanted to specialize in say sports medicine or emergency medicine - I have that option in the future.
      Fourth year of medical school you apply and go on interviews for residency in the specialty of your choice. This process is similar to the ones you did to get into medical school. There are no guarantees that you will get accepted. You just have to get good Board Scores, shine on your interview, and wish for the best!

    I want to be a doctor but my problem is I’m a bit squeamish. I don’t like needles or surgery and such. I mean I can watch but it’ll bother me. Also, I feel that when it comes to me doing it, I won’t be able to. It scares me so much that that will be my downfall. I feel like I can do it, though. Like I can grow to the point of it not bothering me. What do you think?

    So when you are in med school.. do you have to go through every rotation? Or just the specialities that you match to?

    Loved your video!!! I am a pre-nursing student thinking about going pre-med. I know nothing about becoming a doctor and everything about becoming a nurse (my mom and sis are nurses) I never really thought about it until about a year ago and I kept saying...no I don't want to go...I don't want to be consumed in my career with no family time. My career goal was to become a Family Nurse Practitioner but I hate that I won't be able to work autonomously. So i have such an important question. What is the typical work schedule for a Family Physician? I don't mind working long shifts..nurses do 12 hour shifts. I just would like to know what I would be getting myself into if I make this transition. I hope this finds you well. And I appreciate you putting your journey on display.

      +Miranda Harris most full time family medicine physicians work 4 days a week. Clinic is from 8-5 but most need to stay long after to finish documentation. Those who work part time work 1 full day and two half days. You ultimately decide how busy you want to be

      Jenny Le wow!! I am so surprised. I always thought becoming a MD meant a huge work hour commitment 60+. I honestly wish I would have knew about this sooner. Thank you so much for responding to me.

    • @mirandaharris9871

      I understand now that it depends on your specialty

    • @drjennale
      @drjennale  6 років тому

      +Miranda Harris there's much more work that goes on behind the scene like reviewing charts and documentation but as I said, you choose how busy you want to be. There is a much higher debt burden to consider as a physician as compared to nurses

    When you match to a specialty do u get to pick which specialty you want to match to? For example if I wanted to be an ob/gyn do I automatically get to specialize in that?

    • @drjennale
      @drjennale  7 років тому +1

      +Maya Johnson#1 Yes you get to pick what speciality you apply to. You will only match into a program that you have put on your list.
