- This past weekend, the USC Trojans landed two of the best portal prospects in women's basketball for this offseason cycle: Stanford's Kiki Iriafen and Oregon State's Talia Von Oelhoffen, the former of whom was expect to visit Dawn Staley and South Carolina's women's basketball program this week. With these two decisions being made, some members of the WBB sphere are legitimately posing the question of whether or not the Trojans, led by Juju Watkins, are now better than the Gamecocks, in spite of Carolina's undefeated national title run last season. How does this add to the degree in which Carolina fans despise the media and how it could put a cap on the growth of the sport over the next several years? I think eventually Joyce could be the better player of the 2, but since she hasn't even played a NCAA game yet, I think you have to currently give the nod to Kiki.
@@krbcan1569people act like Kiki has been playing as well as she did last year for years. The most she averaged in her first 2 years was 6.7 points. Last year her numbers jumped significantly and she is a good player, but she isn't JuJu, and I don't think she will be better than what Joyce will eventually be as you said, although I agree that currently Kiki should get the nod as she has played in college whereas Joyce is yet too.
It's not disrespect as much as stirring the pot. Trying to create drama. It will only help Dawn Staley motivate her team.
We need to stir the pot tho to create storylines … same thing done in the pro game … trust me it will be a good thing but settled on the court
SC has ten starters on the team. They will be awesome. It will be an interesting and exciting season.

South Carolina was ranked #6 on paper last season. Need I say more. So Cal will need more than those two.
They have Juju too which is probably the best woman player in basketball

Well Juju certainly helps. Think they're putting an inordinate amount of pressure on the freshmen they have coming in, but they do need to learn how to play together. Also, still don't know about their coach, at least on my end.
Iowa had the Caitlin Clark and couldn’t get a national championship two years in a row. JuJu may be the best player, but it remains to be seen which school has the best team. Having the best player is not good enough. Teams win championships.

Caitlin Clark is in good company. Over 5,000 others didn't win one either while only 24 did. In fact, even more never made it to a championship game, my friend. Trust me, she's not concerned about not winning a trophy. As the face and savior of WBB, she has bigger fish to fry. She has enough money to buy a trophy. She has an NIL of 3.1 million and counting, not to mention a WNBA contract and more. She couldn't get a championship in 2 years but her loses made her more money than all those who did. NCAA BB is an amateur sport not a career sport; the WNBA is. Winning a championship in college will bring good memories. Playing in the WNBA will bring good money, especially if your name is Caitlin Clark or JuJu Watkins, my friend. †

Correct! LSU was listed by most pundits to repeat. NOT. USC was slated to reach the final four. Not. What occurred SC went undefeated and will get another RING. Period.
I'm a USC fan and I know they are not better than South Carolina lol The moves USC and UConn are making does give them a CHANCE to beat anyone in the tournament but it's way too early to make that call with just names on a roster. People think it's easy to do what South Carolina did last year with their extensive talent. What they don't understand is, it is SO hard to do what Dawn does to get her team to buy in and play so unselfishly.
If you have Juju and Iriafen they might be able to will your team to a win. Problem is, when you have the star power USC has now, there is only one ball on the court. They will have to do a lot of work to get the necessary chemistry to be able to win it all next year. South Carolina is still easily the team to beat, based on their defense and depth alone. I like all the moves because it will be very competitive next year and the tournament should be so fun to watch. South Carolina is in the top tier by themselves and then in that second tier I would put teams like UConn/USC/Notre Dame/LSU/Texas. Can't wait to see how it all plays out next year.
Come on man! Main and social media been grooming Paige Bueckers, Cameron Brink, and Caitlyn Clark for all the last four years Dawn Staley teams were dominating women college basketball.

The powers that be has always hated on Dawn Staley. It is deeper than basketball and not worth listening to the disrespect. We will just continue to show up and play.
1. SoCal got beat in the elite 8 by an injury riddled UConn team. That same UConn team that SC beat by double digits WITHOUT Kamilla Cardoso!
2. Oregon State transferTalia von Olehoffen and her teammates got beat by SC in the elite 8 by double digits.
3. Stanford transfer Kiki Irafen has never beat SC while at Stanford. I doubt she can do it at So. Cal.
4. So. Cal struggled against Washington State, it took double overtime to win…and they want smoke with South Carolina?!

I do think they'll make a deep run, but I also don't know what to make of that team. Juju is clearly a generational talent that has brought a lot of attention to that program, but will it automatically equate to Final Fours and Championships? Unless she can score AND facilitate like Clark, I don't think it's a guarantee.

And Malaysia Fulwiley is also a generational talent. SC is deep and talented and will repeat. We will take whatever ranking they give us in the preseason and take command at the start of the season. Look at what happened last year? 38-0. I’m not saying we will go undefeated, however, we will take the ranking and let our play speak for itself.

Nobody wants Dawn Staley to win outside of state SC, the hate is real based on what, because her team is mostly black? It's just what winners have to deal with when everyone else is jealous of her dynasty.
All the teams can stack pad all they want but they are not built like SC. The only team that can beat SC is the refs and that’s it. They haven’t go a Dawn Day Care

And you said so many true things. And the Caitlin Clark hype this last year, the more I think about it. It's not a referendum on the media, or Caitlin Clark, or her bandwagon fans. It's a referendum on the abysmal failure in advertising women's baskteball for the last decade. It should not be that no one cares about anyone else but Caitlin Clark or Angel Reese. The rise of South Carolina should be a bigger story, other teams should get more attention too. The sport needs to do a better job or recruiting fans beause it shouldn't ONLY take the flukey kind of attention Clark got bring attention to the sport.
I know the media reported it, but they more than likely got the two USCs mixed up. Could never see her on the east coast unless she was drafted by a pro team.

If Breezy and Raven can MAKE their shots in 2024-25, it's will be a LOCK-IN.
23-24 team preseaon ranked at #6 because they lost their entire starting rotation to the WNBA draft and graduation -- that's fair (and one could even argue that #6 may have even been a bit generous). But the 24-25 team returns their entire starting rotation (minus Cardoso) and backfills the 4/5 spot with an amazing recruiting class, after winning an undefeated Natty -- and they get disrespected by the media because the left coast pseudo USC team brings in 2 high profile portal players? Did the media forget that Von Oelhoffen was a nono-factor - going 3-12 and scoring 8 points in the Elite 8 game against the True USC? Did the media forget that a Cardoso-less USC beat UConn by 19 points? Did the media forget that the True USC Gamecocks have forged an unshakable bond where TEAM is what makes it tick?
Make it make sense. The 24-25 True USC team is the de facto team to beat - hands down.
That's why I made the comments I made at the end. Almost like they're trying to manufacture a storyline so they don't have to just say "It's South Carolina and everyone else" this offseason which, granted, is part of their job to unearth other storylines, but I agree, Carolina has earned the respect for people to say "They're the best until another team proves otherwise".

what do you want, media coverage or championships? I'm willing to bet Clark would easily trade 90%of her hype for a second win over South Carolina. Who cares if people think SoCal is better "on paper?" Mike Tyson was a 40-1 favorite over Buster Douglass and we all know how that turned out. Hell, SC was way better on paper than Iowa last year, and we know how that turned out too. The fact is, outside of the state of South Carolina very few care about SC WBB. Espn is going to cover the team(s) that are going to draw an audience. Let me ask you, what was the viewership of the title game two years ago when the elite of the elite women's programs met? 4.85 million. The two most dominant programs, by far, BY FAR, the last 15 years drew fewer viewers than Iowa-West Virginia and Iowa-Colorado this year. Way less than Iowa-LSU the past two years, and SC's semifinal game was HALF of Iowa-UConn game the very same night. So what does that tell you? People would rather watch other teams. So what? Just focus on what's important. Winning games and not what some doink commentator thinks. Let people think SoCal is better, and then beat the dog out of them like you did Iowa. Take your title, go home and be happy. Same thing for people bitching about Clarks shoe deal and why Aja Wilson doesn't have one. Well, the obvious truth is this: Nike doesn't give any more of a rat's ass about Clark than they do Wilson. But what they do care about is who is going to sell shoes. If they thought AW could sell as many shoes she would have had a deal years ago. South Carolina, like Wilson, is the best. But that doesn't mean fans, media, companies are going to like you the most. As a gamecock fan, I don't have a problem with where trojans are ranked. Iriafan is a Great and experienced player. She was arguably the best player on a team that had Cameron Brink. Oelhoffen is an excellent player. Their recruiting class is one of the best in the nation. JuJu Watkins is THEEEEE best player in the nation. So yes, So Cal should be ranked number 1.
