Bro the law is the law and the judge is just doing his job and everyone is just doing their damn jobs, everyone here knows this is a terribly ridiculous thing. Dude has $250 in fines for a $4 bag of donuts.
at the end... did i hear right that the dude spend 193 days in jail over a bag of donuts? and the credit for the time spent toward the punishment is only $34 ?
250 dollar fine. 93 days in jail, credit for 34 days, balance is suspended. So, no more jail time and he has until the end of the year to pay the fine.
They do their job regardless of the crime or case being brought to them. What sucks is the COP could have easily just let this guy go but he wanted to send a message. Over a $4 bag of donuts. Now this guy has $250 in fines.
how does a donut like that get into court over stolen doughnuts? i mean seriously ... how much can doughnuts cost? in UK a bag of doughnuts was like 69 pence, in some EU countries similar bag is about 2 eur (bit bigger). those are custard or jam filled, plain powdered doughnuts are even cheaper. i mean seriously .. he steals a bag of doughnuts and ends up in court? are they all totally DUMB in the head? he could have just offered to pay for the damage done directly to owner, why is this court needed for? 50 dollars and "remainder" in 60 days, i assume that total amount was like 300 dollars or something? WHY ALL THIS WASTE OF TIME, he could have just offered to pay twice the doughnut's price directly to owner .. and if owner refuses, then it's his fault for being an a-hole. honestly if i was judge and owner refused to take the payment directly, i'd fine that owner 1000 for wasting court's time. ALSO if you're literally starving and can't afford food, just ASK! walk into shops and ask nicely, say that you have no money and you was thinking about stealing, but you decided to ask. and if they say no, then at least ask for work! most shops or similar businesses always need some work done, just ASK, most likely you will be hired on spot. i know, cuz i've been in bad situations, kind of still am .. and it's easy to get work if you just ask. dont waste time on some applications and interviews, just walk into common businesses and ask for work. some construction, car repair shop, food stores ..etc. but he straight out just resorts to stealing doughnuts ... cmon man. i generally dislike most people and i think people are selfish and mean, but there are good people too. some people don't mind helping if they can. just stop stealing, go ask for work if you're in that bad situation.
In the USA the law is supposed to be blind, which is unfortunately why he was punished so harshly ($4 bag of donuts $250 in fines). But I agree it is insane and ridiculous and the judge may have given him a break. It is what it is.
Its hard not to smile when there is 10 people at work in their best suits because of a guy tha stole a bag of donuts.

there is so much tragedy that comes through court rooms, it is nice to see some levity for a minor offence.

Love judge Simpson
If I was the prosecutor I would be embarrassed to even present this case. What a waste of time and resources.
what a sad case you are..
