In her previous bands, Alyssa made "regular" rock vocals, or operatic (Nightwish style). But in Arch Enemy, she's following the growling (fry vocals) of the previous vocalist, Angela Gossow (who's manager of the band and has solo work and colabs). Growling, without technique, blows the vocal chords, damages the larinx, but Alyssa know how to do it properly. Try "The Eagle Flies Alone", "The World is Yours", "War Eternal", "Do or Die" (Amaranth feat Angela Gossow).
“I don’t know a lot about metal from Sweden” breaks my Swedish metal heart. Heard of Entombed? Dismember? Unleashed? At the Gates? Dark Tranquility? In Flames? Opeth? Meshuggah? Edge of Sanity? *panting*
I love your reaction, I love this band not only their quality but their history as a Band with Angela and Alissa. They have a Big heart and put it in their music and performances.
bassstisb ha! That’s the truth. Very nice guy too. Hell, the entire band treated every single person at that meet and greet like they were the only one there. Good people.
bassstisb Bro, I was shocked at how few people showed for the meet and greet (I blame Atlanta traffic). I also met Trivium at the same event, another group of absolutely stellar guys. They all seem to really, truly appreciate support as opposed to expecting it. Btw, the meet and greet wasn’t expensive at all. Worth it bro.
Arch Enemy is awesome With Alissa The world is yours War Eternal You will know my name With Angela Bloodstained cross Leader of the rats Savage Messiah
The blond guitarist is Jeff Loomis, who was famous for his work in Nevermore, Conquering Dystopia and his solo releases, before joining Arch Enemy. Jeff Loomis is a true guitar hero in his own right, mostly for his 7-string work (he's had a 7-string signature guitar with Schecter for many years). Combined with Michael Amott this band has one of the best guitar lineups ever.
Have seen them 5 times the past 6 years and they never dissappointed one of my best live experiences (en par with some very memorable ones from Ensiferum and Alestorm). One highlight was their tour together with Tribulation, Jinjer and Wintersun. Go catch them if they come near your town one day ;) Btw another one of my favorites from that Wacken show is "Bloodstained Cross"
@4:23 That's what the _melodic_ in _Melodic Death Metal_ stands for. Other huge bands of the genre: At the Gates In Flames Children of Bodom Dark Tranquillity
This is their new lead singer Alissa White-Gluz. You should check out the official video of this song too. Angela Gossow was the lead singer when they recorded the music video of this song. Angela Gossow has a much deeper voice.
Last Year We went to NYC. Hammerstein's Ballroom to see Swedish Death Metal Tour. Amon Amarth, Arch Enemy, At The Gates... Swedish Metal: Hypocrisy, Tiamat, Dismember, Opeth, Dark Tranquility, In Flames, Meshuggah, Bathory, Soilwork, Candlemass, Katatonia, Therion, Marduk, Entombed, Dissection, The hunted, Hammerfall, Dark Funeral, Sabaton...
Dude, as a certified Metalhead I highly recommend: Arch Enemy - War Eternal Anything from Amon Amarth And, if you want some clear vocals from this Singer, The Agonist - Panophobia
The tall blond haired guitar player with the big hands is Jeff Loomis...he's probably one of the best guitar players in metal of the last 30 yrs...he has done some solo work and I'm a fan of his previous band Nevermore...check out something from them The River Dragon Has Come & This Godless Endeavour Those are prolly my 2 favorite shredding songs from them
You should really check out Thank you pain by the Agonist. She switches between clear and screaming a lot there and i tell you, youre not ready for that its AMAZING
Bloodstained Cross, or Heart of Darkness.. This band pulled me in and it seems ike I always go back to them. Very good medicine for me these days.. To me, this is precious metal.. Love it..
If im not all wrong that tall dude is Jeff Loomis, mostly famous for being the guitarist of Nevermore. Very sadly their singer Warren Dane died 2017. I love Nevermore and I think their album Dead Heart in a Dead World is at least in top 10 metal albums of all time.
The awesome thing about her is that she can actually sing normally as well. She has an incredibly good vocal techniche to avoid getting her normal voice destroyed by screaming like this. Angela was sick too, both are goddesses
About time! This is my "one" screaming track. Such a charasmatic performance. War Eternal from the same gig is good too. If you want to see what she can do clean, check out a guest appearance in Kamelot "Liar Liar" ua-cam.com/video/VDLZ6Mqy7AM/v-deo.html
I'd suggest checking out AE's "We Will Rise MFVF 2010" with Angela Gossow, their former singer and currently their manager (she wanted to step back to spend more time with her family and picked Alissa as her successor). Both great growlers but with very different growling techniques. Cheers!
they are specifically Melodic Death metal, her name is Alissa and she joined the band in 2014 replacing Angela Gossow, both are brutal but Angela just has a powerfull incomparable voice, if you want to check out the first songs with Alissa, check out War Eternal or Stolen Life, and if you want Angela, in my opinion Silent Wars or Nemesis (Live in Tokyo) to compare it.
Mate, just for you - Alissa is canadian :))))) And if you wish to know swedish metal try Sabaton - recomend you song To Hell and Back or Primo Victoria.
Alissas old band The Agonist is more like Jinjer. You should give them a try. I think she should have stayed with The Agonist, there she could use her full skill range. Great songs to listen to: Thank you Pain, Panophobia, Ideomotor and with there new singer In Vertigo.
The trick is to not use your vocal chords, the technical name of growls and screams are false chords vocals. The false chords are just above your vocal chords and are used very sparringly in normal singing, but growl and scream uses only the false chords, mixed with complex sound manipulation a lot of the lower growls f.ex. uses strict mouth shapes which makes it hard to articulate certain consonants, screaming almost uses no tongue and the mouth shape is close to an open normal singing mouth shape so it's easier to enunciate properly. It's very interesting from a purely voice manipulation perspective.
Awesome reaction to an awesome band yet again man! Don't know if you want other song suggestions or not, nor what you may like/know of, but I'll put some here just in case, for videos or just for your own playlists: *More Arch Enemy* - War Eternal - You Will Know My Name *More of this singer* (from Alissa White-Gluz former band, Tha Agonist) - And Their Eulogies Sang Me To Sleep - Thank You Pain *Kinda related metal* Kamelot - Liar Liar (feat. Alissa) - Sacrimony (Angel of Afterlife) (feat. Alissa & Elize Ryd from Amaranthe) *Catchy metal from my own beloved Sweden* (I tried make it heavy -> less heavy) In Flames - Alias - Deliver Us Avatar - Let It Burn - Bloody Angel Amaranthe - Do or Die (feat. Angela Gossow, Arch Enemy's former singer) - Hunger - 1.000.000 Lightyears Dead By April - Losing You Arion - At The Break Of Dawn (feat Elize) Some will approve of this list, some will not, but personal preference is one of the many joys of music! And if anyone would like to add to this list then go wild! Regardless if you use any of this info Hoop, great work again and have a good one!
You will probably love their former singer even more! 🙂 Angela Gossow is an absolutely beast. Bloodstained Cross, Yesterday is Dead and Gone, Ravenous and Blood is on your hands are some of their better songs with Angela as the singer. If you want more good songs with the current singer (Alissa White Gluz) you should check out No More Regrets and As the pages burn. But they have many more good songs that i havent mentioned here 🙂

Impressive vocals from Arch Enemy for sure. Go back and listen to Nightwish - Your's is an Empty Hope. But pay attention to Floor in the chorus. I think you missed something in your first reaction.
Male death metal singers sound like Cookie Monster Female death metal singers sound like Satan’s mountain lions roaring right before they eat your face off... or more like a... a Puma. Well.... Arch Enemy’s do. They can’t all be winners, but AE has had the fortune of employing two of the most explosive vocalists ever.

brutal voice, but i can understand every word. that is real talent :D
That's why it's *melodic* death metal, it's powerful and "catchy". :) I love this band and this woman and Jeff Loomis!
They are simply one of heavy metals greatest bands. Brutality driven by a sense of melody that few other bands possess
In her previous bands, Alyssa made "regular" rock vocals, or operatic (Nightwish style). But in Arch Enemy, she's following the growling (fry vocals) of the previous vocalist, Angela Gossow (who's manager of the band and has solo work and colabs). Seen them twice in concert, she pretty much never used her cleans...they may be swedish, but she's from Montreal Canada...
“I don’t know a lot about metal from Sweden” breaks my Swedish metal heart. Heard of Entombed? Dismember? Unleashed? At the Gates? Dark Tranquility? In Flames? Opeth? Meshuggah? Edge of Sanity? *panting*
shit, it brings me back decades ago
Avslut, LIK, Orbit Culture, Frantic Amber, Enslavement of Beauty, Night Crowned, Ereb Altor, Månegarm, Wormwood.
Had to add some newer stuff, too :)
Don't forget the legends Soilwork!
Like 80% of the bands I like are Swedish lmao... then again I do love melodeath
I love your reaction, I love this band not only their quality but their history as a Band with Angela and Alissa. They have a Big heart and put it in their music and performances.

roflmao!
Dont piss of the pixie...
did you guys heared about cute vegan etc vocalist of... Napalm Death ;-) no? then you have to!
I love this band. Try 'The eagle flies alone.'
The bassist is Bigfoot hiding in the open. Met em, he was huge, and I’m a big guy.
Well, he does make a bass guitar look like a normal guitar when he's playing. (At least when comparing size, not in the way of playing lol)
bassstisb ha! That’s the truth. Very nice guy too. Hell, the entire band treated every single person at that meet and greet like they were the only one there. Good people.

Nice react dude! Arch Enemy its one of my favorite band. I have all record and I saw live three times xD 😂
They're all I listen to lately! She's the greatest performer/ vocalist in music today - ANY MUSIC!

Dude, AE live in Japan 2008 with Angela Gossow, thats growl. I love them both Alissa and Angela ❤️
Alissa is good, but you should check out their previous singer too! Try We Will Rise live in Japan. Angela is a beast!
6:05 that's Jeff Loomis, formerly of Nevermore. Check out/react to them if you haven't already.

What a show...what a great reaction.
I love this band, Metal forever!!
Business suits and combat boots by The Agonist. AE lead singer, Alyssa, was singer of that band
I prefer their older vocalist for this song "Angela", but at least you got to hear the song.
Like them both but as you said and its written for Angela so ❤️
This is the only song I like much more with Angela.
I am legend/Out for blood from the same album as Nemesis

That band is fucking awesome.

her screaming in this song is nothing compared to how Rob Halford growls in Judas Priest's Painkiller ;)
I think the melodic part is the catchy part of the song.
