The Assad regime is being attacked by Syrian rebels and Syrians from refugee camps in Turkey, armed by Erdogan to overthrow the Assad regime. Assad's brutal crackdown on dissent, helped by Iran and Russia has backfired and the Syrian people have tuned against them. Hundreds of Russian troops have been killed or been taken hostages so Putin fired the general who was in charge of the special operation in Syria.
Well of course, they are being occupied and their oil taken by the US, whilst being sanctioned illegally (even after being struck by an earthquake it continued) to try and force people to overthrow their elected president. So why would anything have changed it is a continuation of an old strategy.
Alastair Crooke is one of the commentators that I trust with my understanding of these wars. He is worth quietly listening to until he finishes what he wants to say..
It's often moral and intellectual cowardice combined with ignorance and how the hyper-rich in the US bought up all the corporate and legacy media outlets. The lazy and complacent simply cannot believe that every major US corporate media outlet is telling them the same lies regarding foreign policy and economics. It might help if they knew the same small pool of said rich owned both CNN and FOX. BlackRock is a major shareholder in both, for example, with enough of an interest to dictate and forbid content.
Listening to Mr. Crooke is always widening the insight and understanding of the Middle East, a part of the world which in western media is always painted in the darkest colors.
absolutely. The aggressions against Iraq, Libya, and Syria are without doubt benefits for Israel. They all three were Israel's enemies. Jeffrey Sachs has essentially made this same observation. All of this has entailed extreme financial costs to the economy and our people. I am beginning to believe this Russia/Ukraine, and China, thing is also tied to Israel. Israel survives only with American support and if the US weakens, so does Israel, (and with that, concessions they would be loath to make) so competitors to US influence must be destroyed or rendered helpless.

I loved what Alastair had to say about the young minds in Hezbollah being taught philosophy to keep them grounded, and to navigate through difficult situations. And what he said about westerners' - coming away after a talk with hezbollah leaders - inability to understand the replies they received in the stories, reinforced what I knew at a subconscious level, which was, the westerners (meaning the elites, the bureaucracy and the media for the most part) notoriously lack empathy with whoever they talk to on the other side. Great interview!

I think the issue with Turkey's interest in the F35 program is not necessarily to buy them but to reestablish contracts Turkish manufacturers once had to supply parts for the program. A lot of money is potentially in the balance.
the planes doesn't work anyway, at least the ones sent to Turkey won't especially against specific adversaries. It is the tech and know-how that's actually the reason behinds Turkey's interest. Defense industry is important for Erdogan. Same deal with Israel. There are sanctions on Turkey that prevents the sale of certain tech to Turkey from various western countries, rotors for radars or advanced cameras for drones for example. Turkey would buy those from countries like Canada, France etc. until 2017. Once the sanctions came in to play it was surprisingly Israel who would go behind the back of the US to supply those hardware to Turkey. Israel gives similar support to Azerbaijan despite the objections from the west. Israel did the same even for China and Russia at times selling them stuff America did not want them to have.
