A lot of people complaining about gatekeeping lately, they should ask themselves why companies are only offering courses, not job offers...

Ugh. I'll just keep tech as a side hobby. I don't want to worry about layoffs, competition, and a volatile economy. The tech part on it's own can be stressful

Why then were there 400,000+ requests for H-1b workers, 75% of which are in the IT space? The reason is simple, job discrimination and a complete unwillingness of middle management to look at the saturated local engineering market. A fact laid bare in the DOJ vs Facebook (2020) and Apple 2023.

These jobs won't come back. The industry is in a major transformation and the skillsets needed once these changes are complete, you won't have.

As such, organizations simply don't need as many tech workers. 😳

What about all the jobs that are being outsourced to other countries for cheap labor? How will that impact the tech labor market? What jobs in tech are in danger of being outsourced and what jobs will never be outsourced to other countries?

I had trouble hiring developers. They say they’re in the US, but they actually are in Asia or Africa. One even sent another guy to visit our office. So they’re stealing jobs that aren’t even trying to outsource.

People are getting jobs in tech the economy is bad across the board and tech was wayyy over leveraged and so they let people go so there’s just more competition to get those jobs but people will leave there’s seats. It’s like a game of musical chairs you just got to impress your interviewer

Software engineer with 25 years of experience here, 6 years with my current employer. My department consists of 300 people. Out of this there are maybe 80 of us who can actually code. The rest are management, project coordinators, PMOs, DEI, manual testers, newsletter editors etc. If we fired half of them no one would even notice. Over the recent decade many people come to IT just for money and promise of better life. They have zero passion or interest in technology and cant understand that IT is all about continuous learning. Our industry is changing at breathtaking pace and single online course simply wouldn’t cut it. I blame the so called big tech for promoting this false zero to hero ethos and I’m not surprised that they’re laying people off. My advice for the new joiners would be: if you want a prince, be a princess.

Kind of pointless to compare 2009 to 2023 or 2024. The interest rate environments were completely different. The financial conditions were significantly more loose in 2009.
If you want a real comparison you need to look back at 2001. GFC was rough but tech thrived because…free money.
If you want to get back into tech now or even next year, you have to grind hard. Or alternatively you have to wait for loose financial conditions. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

They ain't coming back. You'd have to be living under a rock to not see that the Tech landscape has funadamentally changed overnight, and the sad fact is no one can predict what skills will really be needed go-forward. Boomer to Gen-Z, all have or will be discarded along the way in the next year or two. We are looking at UBI to avoid a violent revolution... (48 years in tech here, 'retired' now, but would like to continue to contribute part-time to stay mentally active- I'm just a 'hobby' Python and Data Science guy now). I do hope it gets better and doesn't turn out like I suspect... not optimistic though. Good Luck to all of us in the pot as they turn up the temp. on us frogs....
