They ain't coming back. You'd have to be living under a rock to not see that the Tech landscape has funadamentally changed overnight, and the sad fact is no one can predict what skills will really be needed go-forward. Boomer to Gen-Z, all have or will be discarded along the way in the next year or two. We are looking at UBI to avoid a violent revolution... (48 years in tech here, 'retired' now, but would like to continue to contribute part-time to stay mentally active- I'm just a 'hobby' Python and Data Science guy now). I do hope it gets better and doesn't turn out like I suspect... not optimistic though. Good Luck to all of us in the pot as they turn up the temp. on us frogs....

Startups with less than 10 people in midsize towns generally don’t provide CPT/OPT sponsorships due to budget. They prefer citizens and also they sometimes offer unpaid roles. So don’t fall for these traps.

UK here. A couple of other points that I have noticed: 1. Hiring managers in small towns are often proud of their towns, so if you have any personal history with those towns they will be pleased. For example, a London accent might NOT be welcome in Coventry but a more local accent will be preferred. 2. If you have a passion/hobby then you will be preferred by firms in that sector. For example, a car fanatic will be able to 'talk cars' in an interview at say BMW.

I have worked with many, many small teams. Generally almost all the key work is done by one maybe two of the staff in say a 30-person group. So you want those x15 - x30 engineers.

Software engineer with 25 years of experience here, 6 years with my current employer. My department consists of 300 people. Out of this there are maybe 80 of us who can actually code. The rest are management, project coordinators, PMOs, DEI, manual testers, newsletter editors etc. If we fired half of them no one would even notice. Over the recent decade many people come to IT just for money and promise of better life. They have zero passion or interest in technology and cant understand that IT is all about continuous learning. Our industry is changing at breathtaking pace and single online course simply wouldn’t cut it. I blame the so called big tech for promoting this false zero to hero ethos and I’m not surprised that they’re laying people off. My advice for the new joiners would be: if you want a prince, be a princess.

I am in Data Analytics and the data analytics field is experiencing significant overlap with developer and business analyst roles, leading to unrealistic job descriptions that expect proficiency in a vast array of technologies. Companies seem to be struggling to define clear boundaries, resulting in a "jack-of-all-trades" approach that can be overwhelming for job seekers and ultimately hinder specialization.
