Def coachella ateez week 2. First week had terrible camera work and sound (fancams were way beter than the official coachella work) and it was windy but they still used smoke and so on the best parts, nothing was visible... but week 2, totally different. Thankfully coachella learned fast and corrected it. So, go with week 2.

If you like korean movies you will fall into ATEEZ. Their concept is unique (Pirates and distorsion). Not only their song and music are really good, but live performances always amazing.

All of their songs are definitely masterpieces including their energetic but also slower songs! If you like cinematic MV I would recommend HALAZIA (+intro & epilog), GUERILLA (+intro /trailers), DON'T STOP, many others but I'll stop here :)
I forgot! Mixing cinematic aspect and great performance, you should check their mama 2023 (bouncy + crazy form cinematic version) that can also help understanding the story line

Glad u are liking Ateez! Their style is actually very unique, and not the typical kpop style that many people know of. It's amazing that your introduction to kpop is Ateez. Also the instrumental at the end is Crazy Form teaser!
I recommend checking out the songs in the coachella setlist first before reacting to it. I also recommend getting to know the members more before that! So that you can see their growth and enjoy it fully. It's totally ok if you want to check it out first tho. As you said, being open-minded is the key. Their culture is very different.

Secondly, (this is a long one), here's a short kpop 101;
One of the unique things about kpop, among todays music scene, is how many members there are in a group. When I tell people about these groups they're like; 'Thats a lot of members, does that even work?!' Considering the 'normal' amount in a pop group, we're used to here in the west, is 5 members, and in kpop they're normally between 6-10 members, some more, some less. And yes, it works - they MAKE is work. The many members in the groups, is what makes kpop, because it creates this unique dynamics, life and energy in the music. It's because of this, that they are able to mix several genres, like pop and rap into one song.
The mixing of genres and tempo is one of the things that make kpop stand out. Kpop artists are often multitalented in music, mastering different genres. You'll find the groups have both upbeat dance/EDM and slow pop songs, some even in the genre of rock as well.
And the dance. In kpop, the choreography is just as important as the singing and rapping. Kpop is a three part thing like this and it is something every artist is judged on and trained hard in.
Now, for a little history lesson;
Kpop is a music genre/style born in South Korea in the early-mid 1990's. It first saw daylight in the hiphop/rap trio 'Seo Taiji and Boys', who got inspired by western pop amd hiphop, during a time where South Korea started to open up to and let themselve get inspired by the outside world (society and politically, at lot of things happened in South Korea during the 1990's, kpop is the reason for some of the changes, but that's a longer story 😅)
In the late '90's, three entertainment/music companies was established by established South Korean musicians; SM, YG and JYP. These three companies are the pillars of kpop and are still running, as some of the biggest companies in the industry.
The genre/style of kpop has been around, for the better part of 35 years and it's been sort into what is called "generations", as the style evovles and grows, more into it's own. 'Seo Taiji and Boys' started the 1st generation of kpop in the early '90's and in late 2023, we stepped into the 5th generation. There is no particular rule for when it changes, some will say its so and so many years, but even that doesn't add up. However, when you listen to music and see MV's from all groups across the years, there's a slight change from each generation to the other, in style and sound of the music.
My three favorite groups are good examples of the difference in generations and how kpop has evolved/expanded over the years.
ATEEZ is 4th generation, debuting in 2018
SUPER JUNIOR is 2nd generation, debuting 2005
MONSTA X is 3rd generation, debuting in 2015
Each group has it's own fandom and that fandom is given a name, by the group/company, often with a unique and significant meaning.
ATEEZ fandom is called 'ATINY' (a-ti-ny), which is a combination of 'ATEEZ' and 'Destiny' binding the members and their fans together through destiny. Also, ATEEZ has this concept of being pirates and their pirateship is called 'DESTINY' 😉
Every group also have a special designed lightstick, which represents the group. Fans buy this and brings to concerts, to show support and attendance. Lightsticks often has names as well. ATEEZ's lightstick is called 'Lightiny' 😉
In the kpop fandom, we have the word "bias", which is a word we us for our favorite member/members. Like in ATEEZ, my bias'/favorite members are YunHo and YeoSang, because I can somehow related to them and just find them especially cute/funny/talented - they stand out to me, among the others.
There's A LOT more to kpop, like the way they are discovered, trained and debuting. The way kpop artists are CELEBS and interacts with fans. Some people, unknown to the genre and culture, will think it weird how one can obsess over a celebrity they've never talked to or know, however, all groups have these reality/varity shows, where they show some personalities and dynamics of the groups. They have a ton of 'behind the scenes', vlogs and often go online to interact with fans, so yeah, you do get to "know" these people, more than just some far away celebrity 😉 And while it of cause doesnt show all, you still get an idea of the person behind the music. You find out that they are humans, like everyone else and its one of the charms as well 😊
FYI, the ATEEZ members' reality/varity show is called 'Wanteez' (can be watched on youtube) and it show you another side of the boys, like the fact that they are silly, rather chaotic and really down to earth people 😊

I’ve been a Kpop fan for 10 years, witnessed many groups come and go, but there are none that I respect as much as I do ATEEZ. Even though they came from a small company that could barely afford to promote them and had to rely on their hard work and talents, they are always humble and respectful to everyone. As you can see, their music is very unique to them and you can immediately tell them apart from other groups. To give you some backstory on how “Bouncy🌶️” came to be, many KPOP groups do song challenges on social media apps like tiktok and instagram where fans can promote their songs while dancing along to the chorus, since ATEEZ usually uses difficult and hardcore choreographies they never jumped onto this trend. Feeling bad for their fans, they decided to make “Bouncy🌶️”, an upbeat and fun song with an easy choreography that others could follow along to. The dance instantly became a hit and everyone was doing it, gaining them lots of attention! People even refer to them as the KHot Chili boys lol🤣 As they gain more attention, people are constantly trying to pressure them into changing their music style to something more widely accepted (Western) to which their leader, Hongjoong, adamantly refused saying they have no intention of changing their music to fit in with other groups, they want to stay true to themselves and produce music they enjoy.
Their Coachella performance was absolutely amazing. Week 1 was good but there ended up being a lot of technical difficulties on Coachella’s end, Week 2 ATEEZ put their all again and the performance was powerful and emotional. If you do decide to watch it, I hope you enjoy!😊

Note for you K-Pop is Not a genre but a hole Industry to it's own. It's so much more than just groups that are performing songs on stage and do M/V. It it so so so much deeper than that. They are in a league of their own. No one can equal the K-Pop world. Once you're interested and get in you just can't stop and fall for K-pop industry. They are amazing. Ateez are my Bias and have a very special place in my heart for them. You such check the others too. Like Stray Kids, TxT, Enphypen, EXO, ZB1, Seventeen, NCT 127, NCT Deams, SHINee... And much more. So many, all great, all unique and all worth your time. Enjoy the ride.

Firstly; I think it's now safe to say, welcome to the amazing and colorful rabbithole that is kpop! 🎉 I desovered kpop 3,5 yesrs ago and I've never looked back. Even if I wanted to, I wouldnt have the time, because there is SO MUCH to discover 😅😉 I am what you'd call a 'boygroup multi stanner' meaning I know and listen to A LOT of different male groups of all ages. However, I have three all time favorite groups, that I especially enjoy listening to, know of and follow. ATEEZ are one of them. The OG group SUPER JUNIOR, who's been active for almost 19years is another and the group MONSTA X, who have two full english albums, is the third. They are three very different groups, that I just overall love, both the members and their music 😊

Idk how to explain this but ATEEZ have a very unique sound even among the other kpop groups (you will notice this as you keep learning of other groups, the kpop industry is big but many groups have very familiar sounds so when I discovered ATEEZ I was blown away by how different their sounds are!)
