    It's not quite a fair comparison as one piezo system has a mic and the other doesn't. The K&K with mic sounds much better than the Baggs element, but then the Baggs anthem system, an element with a mic, also sounds much better than the element alone. Though I really like the K&K idea, I'm not such a fan of having to have an external pre-amp.

    • @LucasHaneman
      @LucasHaneman  Рік тому +1

      Fair enough. Unfortunately I don’t have many pickups at my disposal as I don’t own a music store and am a full-time musician. Haha It was more about comparing the sound of the piezo to The body transducers of the K&K. Also, certainly not trying to sell anything as I don’t work for either company, but there is a version of the K&K available with onboard EQ, so a preamp isn’t required in that case. Just wanted to make mention in case you were interested in the sound of that system but wouldn’t want the external preamp

      @@LucasHaneman Thank-you for the suggestion and I will look into that arrangement. I do like the sound you are getting with your set-up and am interested in the K&K as it doesn't have near as many spikey treble sounds to filter out as the under saddle. That being said I do get pretty good results with the element in my Gibson by keeping the pa eq bass at 50% the mids at 20% and the highs at 15%. It's quite the task at getting it all to sound good in piezo systems but I do believe the mic at 10-15% adds a tremendous amount to any piezo arrangement. Many Cheers and thank-you for your videos, suggestions and replies! David

      @@davidsimpson3380 thanks David! I hear you. Everyone has to use whatever works for them. For me when I play acoustic it’s usually in a solo or duo context so I don’t feel the need for a piezo. If I were playing acoustic in a band situation it would certainly be different, but whenever I play with the band I play at telecaster, Stratocaster or some kind of electric guitar I do find the K&K sounds a lot more like a true acoustic guitar when playing acoustic live, but it means that the front of your guitar is a microphone in essence, so some people find it’s a little too sensitive. Personally I like that and I like being able to tap on the body of the guitar to get certain sounds at times. If you can find someone in your neck of the woods who has one of these systems give it a try to see if it’s something you’d like

      Thanks so much for checking out the video. They are really my favorite, and I have tried many. To be honest, I have a video that I think exemplifies the sound of the k&k Trinity system a lot better than this one. For whatever reason it didn’t really hit the algorithm as can happen with UA-cam but I honestly think it’s a better representation of the Sounds you can achieve with these pickups. If you have a few free minutes and wish to check it out. It’s episode 127 of Guitar tone Tuesday.. thanks again for watching and commenting!

      It’s because I am EVERYWHERE ALL THE TIME!!! lol. Yes, indeed, I couldn’t agree more about the K&K. The great Canadian guitarist Don Ross got me hooked up with the company years ago around 2013 and I’ve never looked back. I use these pickups in all my gigging acoustics at least once a week, often multiple times a week, and have never been disappointed. I feel like every guitar retains a lot more of its personality, when plugged in when compared to a traditional piezo

    Another geat video. I hope to find an anthem vs k&k vid of yours. (The anthem seems to be the most used in Nashville right now but all blended pickups seem miles ahead of piezo alone. I plan to buy an Eastman and exoect to mic it, but a blended pickup might be something I'll add later.

      I would love to do that video someday. I don’t have an anthem around but did enjoy the ones I have tried. I am lucky enough to be a K&K Artist, so this is certainly my top pic of choice. I have this system in about five or six of my guitars, and really like the fact that each guitar sounds like it’s self when plugged in. In retrospect I wish I had of done a little more EQ-ing on the plugged in K&K in this video. I usually have it set with quite a bit more top end, but don’t have a way of monitoring myself when I am recording acoustic clips for these videos. at this point I was still very much dialling in the pickup on this instrument. It’s sounding Great now. Thank you again for watching and hopefully someday I will be in a situation to do that comparison.

    My opinion? The LR-Bagss makes it sound a little more present chimy with a mild mid-range heady sound. The K&K brings out the warm more intimate qualities of the guitar. The E60M is just a versatile instrument from what your playing demonstrates - so sorry I missed that last gig, I'm sure it sounded great!

    Great video. The style of playing at 4:51 really demonstrates where under saddle piezos fall short. This is exactly what frustrates me with the stock Fishman system in my own guitar. I like to get aggressive sometimes and the piezo sounds horrible for that stuff. The K&K handles it more gracefully at 6:36. If I only did quiet solo stuff, I’m sure the K&K would be a far more natural sounding option. But I also wonder how the K&K would cut through a loud mix.

    • @LucasHaneman
      @LucasHaneman  2 роки тому +1

      Hi. Thank you so much for checking out the video. I agree with your assessment about where the piezos fall short. I will say though that I definitely don’t just do all quiet solo stuff. I have used this system before in a band context, and I use it regularly at solo shows, and duo shows that range from small clubs to big festival stages. It holds up great in the solo and dual context. In a band mix it also works well, but it’s a bit more sensitive to drums and other instruments that may have a lot of bass frequencies, because of the fact that it turns the front of your guitar into an amplifier in someways. That said I really don’t find Feedback issues to be that bad at all and as I say I’ve played it on many a large stage with my monitor blaring at me. If I were using my acoustic in a band context often I would not probably go for the K & K, but since I play electric when I’m playing with a full band it’s not an issue for me at all. I’d say yes it definitely cuts through a mix if EQ properly. Not in the same way that a piezo would cut through mind you, but personally I find that sound harsh. Maybe the happy medium would be a piezo with an internal microphone. I am going to do another video sometime soon where I compare the K and K to a Fishman with a microphone as well. That will be a video specifically on dual source pickups. I know a lot of people like the LR bags stuff with the internal microphone and piezo for that purpose. I’m trying to remember what it’s called, but I can’t recall right now. I know Fishman does something similar as well with the matrix etc.. The other nice thing about any acoustic guitar pickup these days is the option of using impulse responses, so you could do something like that with an under saddle pickup and get a more natural sound

    I love the comparison video. It is very helpful. K&K sounds better. The Trinity seems like LR Bagg's version of an Anthem pickup. Would love to see a comparison of both.

    Definitely losing that piezo quack when you were digging on the low E. Much better sounding. I’ve not put a trinity in but have the pure mini which merely lacks the mic. May well consider upgrading if I find myself wanting a mic at some point in the future. Didn’t go it right off as I didn’t want to purchase the preamp etc. Sounds great.

    • @LucasHaneman
      @LucasHaneman  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks Arthur. Yeah I certainly favour the K&K. In retrospect it doesn’t sound quite the way I would’ve liked it too in this video. When I record plugged in acoustic guitar sounds for these videos I don’t yet have a way to monitor myself, so I would’ve preferred a little more top end, but oh well. Speaking of top end, I found this is really what the microphone adds. I only use about 10% microphone and 90% of it is the transducers, so I wouldn’t say that you’re missing much. What I find I get from the microphone is some shimmer. I find I hear the strings more if that makes any sense. Because of loud volumes or what have you I have done quite a few gigs with no microphone in the mix, and I like it a lot that way as well. I just find it sounds that little bit more like the acoustic guitar when I can add the microphone in, but the transducers alone are certainly not shabby

  • @soniczoo
    @soniczoo 3 роки тому +1

    Interesting vid! Wow, the k&k trinity has the warmth!
    Wonder if the mic part can be turned off if necessary, that'd be cool in loud situations where it can't help but feedback?
    I'd be interested in hearing how moving that mic (pointing at different spots) effects the sound. I think I sense a slight phase issue that may resolve if pointed elsewhere.. could be the camera too. But it does sound nice as is - just a thought.
    With the raucous band I was in, I ended up using a solid-body fake acoustic-electric thing live. When recording or playing an acoustic only tune, I go with one condenser mic pointed at the 15th fret (the standard), and maybe a room mic (watching for phase issues). After like 30 years, still haven't had to alter my hummingbird or martin - hah - but if that time comes, I'd probably try a K&K.

    • @LucasHaneman
      @LucasHaneman  3 роки тому

      Thanks so much for your comments. Listening back, I’m wondering if I had the phase flipped on my external preamp. I had a gig a couple of days before I shot this and I had to flip the phase to deal with that specific set up. Good ears. With my recording set up for videos I’m not able to monitor my plugged in acoustic sound quite yet. To answer your question about the microphone, yes the placement can certainly change the character of the sound. I tend to go for something close to what KNK recommends but I do mess around with it depending on where I am playing, and the specific guitar. Still fine-tuning this one. Yes you are able to control the level and the EQ of the microphone and the sensors separately, so it’s a very versatile set up that I certainly recommend to anyone who isn’t playing in a crazy loud situation. When I say that I do play quite loud gigs on acoustic guitar, but there aren’t any drums or bass On those gigs usually. When I’m playing with a band I’m almost always on electric. I go into the details of the Trinity system in much more detail on my other video. If curious look up “ guitar tone Tuesday ep: 127 - Why I Play K&K Pickups”. Something to that effect anyhow. On that episode I demonstrate the system in three different guitars and show the preamp that comes with it. Feel free to check it out, and I’m almost certain you would be happy with one of these pickups. It’s the best thing I’ve found, and I’ve looked around a lot. Nothing is perfect when it comes to amplifying an acoustic guitar, but I really find that these are as close as you can get these days. I just like actually hearing the wood and lots of the character of the guitars I put this system into.

    • @LucasHaneman
      @LucasHaneman  Рік тому

      That clip with the thin sound was the LR bags. The K and K is much warmer. In fact I usually EQ the KNK to sound a little bit brighter than I did for this video, but I really wanted to illustrate the contrast. The K and K always sounds more natural and more like the guitar at hand to my ear when compared to this LR bags option

    • @LucasHaneman
      @LucasHaneman  2 роки тому

      Hey there. No I don’t think you will have to drill a new jack hole. There’s a small chance it might have to be resized a little to fit the other Jack, but I don’t think so. If it were my guitar I would leave the other electronics in so as to not have a hole in the side of my guitar, and just install the K & K as well. It’s a pickup that can be installed without any other alterations to your guitar. You would just have to change the jack over, but you could get away with keeping the rest of your old system in as well

    So I have an HD28 special no pickup. It’s so awesome hardly needs one. I just ordered an 000-18 from sweetwater. When they get it I chose to have a LR Baggs anthem put in. I like both the kk mini and Baggs. Sweetwater doesn’t carry the kk brand at all so it was so the Baggs or wait and try to find someone I trust to do the mini install and I don’t know anyone but guitar center. Yikes. Yes another topic for another day. So I just prefer sweetwater do it and it’s inspected and warrantied. Thoughts? Is the mini that much better because I hear both ways? Also I play more times than not just in my home no amp. I hear the Baggs has minimal if any issue causing the sound of the guitar to be different. Is this true? I’m not an expert guitar player but sweetwater says it’s so minimal I would never notice a difference with the Baggs over the mini playing no pickup. But of course they are salesman. Albeit great guys there. I hope I made a good choice I really have to have a pickup in this guitar because currently I sold a Taylor and it was my only pickup guitar beside my gs mini that I have. Thoughts? Thanks man for you nice video.

I just go direct from my board into the PA, and use the monitor in front of me on most stages to hear myself. The sound person takes care of The rest. It’s great. @@gunjabeans absolutely. I’ve done many gigs with it where it’s been quite hot in my monitor with no issues whatsoever. Because of the fact that the face of the Guitar acts like a speaker sometimes this system can pick up vibrations from say drums or things like that if it’s really really loud. Otherwise I’ve used this system on Festival stages and large clubs a lot, and no feedback whatsoever with my guitar literally shouting at me from the monitor

      @@gunjabeans I understand what you’re saying Robbbbi. It is a tough choice, but if it were me I would get it done, especially if you love the guitar and like playing it A lot. I have an acoustic (a dreadnaught with a cutaway) that has been my number one since 2008. Now it has been played on so many gigs, has had two different pickups in it (One of these K & Ks’ since 2013), and it’s been amazing to see it get worn in over the years, and very importantly here it open up with all the heavy play time. You can buy larger end pins to replace the jack if you find that you want to turn it back into a standard acoustic after a while. For me though I just love having the option of recording with a great guitar or playing it live. The nice thing about these systems, even some thing like a Fishman or LR bags with the volume and tone wheel on the inside of the sound hole (If you decide to go piezo) is that you do not have to Cut any wood out of your guitar aside from the larger and pin jack.
