I'm not one who goes to Hobby Lobby but i went with my wife yesterday and found myself looking at all the items and thinking, man i could build that and how cheaply made their items were. While looking at a couple things my wife commented, i know you could make this lol
That's the thing about these home goods stores. You get intimidated because they're selling for $20-40 what you put in $60 worth of work into, then you feel it in your hands and it's not even close. Even if it's a soft wood like pine, it still feels a lot better than most target/hobby lobby stuff.
Man Matt, 5500 views in less than 2 hours? Your channel is smoking!! And almost 20% of views rate the video too? Amazing, most get less than 5%of the viewers to give a thumbs up or down. It's not just your content, which is phenomenal, it's your energy and positivity as well. Add in the excellent videography and editing. Winner!!! Very informational, entertaining, and positive. You're a humble and likable young man, thank you for sharing!
I just got back from a 7 day cruise to three cities in Mexico. Most tourists took pictures of the beaches, food, tropical birds, etc. I took pictures of wood items like benches, fences, wall art, furniture…… Yep, major woodworking nerd. Now, I have 9 new ideas to create for summer. Can’t wait to see how they’ll sell.
I wish I knew you 10 yrs ago, when I retired. My husband and I have struggled with how to do the things we love. Many times ending in a disagreement (at best) you make it seem so simple. I can’t wait to watch some of your videos on the TV.
I'm always taking pics and looking over stuff that I like with the mentality of "I can make that better". I do this every where especially Hobby Lobby. That's for the tutorial! This is my favorite channel! And yes, im a lady woodworker!
The other weekend, I was still thinking about a trellis for my blackberries and materials to use. FENCE PICKET 😮 so I built it with 16 pickets cut 1 3/4". Mathew, your garden ideas were the inspiration behind my design. Thanks.
I bought that A frame display, second hand years ago. Back then, they had a grey wash finish on it. Not made very well. The bottoms are made of the same material doll houses are made of. I think I paid $100 for it, second hand! But I needed it for a vendor market at the time, so I paid it. I added some shredded brown craft paper and my product in them. They looked great. I'll be glad to make another one that is better materials. Thanks!
I am pretty fortunate, we have a wood mill down the road a couple miles and they put out the 8"x8' and 3"x48" scrap slats of various types of wood out on the road to grab. About once every few months I'll swing by and load my truck, plan them to wanted thickness and bring it on to the house for my little projects.
I was at the Hobby Lobby in Paducah with the wife yesterday taking pictures of the things she liked so that I could make them for her. It's crazy how much they charge for this stuff when its so simple to make.
Paducah store is better than the Carbondale, IL store. It is fun 2 check stores against each other 2 see differences. I love watching Matt's videos but haven't made anything of his yet. Still trying to make planters with seat between them and had 2 guess the sizes. Matt tells us about sizes and angles. Still learning how to use the different things husband owns( saws and planner,etc.).
There are many I follow, but Matt is the top for me. I have made many woods project he has shown and sold them all....many were just for the family. Thank Matt
I just found my new hobby and side hustle. This will hopefully get me through college because I’m tired of serving 😂. Thank you so much for your videos!
NOBODY pays full price at Hobby Lobby. Every other week, their wall decor is 50% off, and every (alternate) other week their table decor is 50% off. Also, furniture is ALWAYS 30% off.
@@richardmccann4815Also? They use rubberwood & Acacia, which both activate latex allergies. So, if I use anything in there for too long, my skin will literally split, crack, & bleed. Yay. 🙄
I’m gonna have to go with pallet wood builds. Fence pickets in Alberta are 9 bucks for 1x6x6’ 😱 great tips though, I’ve been making the honeycomb shelves using some slats from an ikea bed frame that someone left beside the dumpsters at my condo
Cool video. As for the J hooks, I have used some metal shower curtain (S) hooks and modified the top. Easy model. Looks great too once I sprayed them black.
Now that spring is here in MN it's finally nice enough to work out in the garage again so I decided to start making things to sell for a few extra bucks. I've binged this series over the last couple days and now have WAAAY too many ideas for projects. Hardest part is narrowing it down to what projects to start first
Love your videos man but you are really talented. Some of the things you say are so easy I think to myself, "I will be struggling with this for hours." Still building all your planters right now and your plans are amazing. Can't thank you enough!
Don't feel bad about it! Everyone struggles a bit starting out. And everything gets easier with practice. Just get some scrap wood plug away at it. Before you know you'll be "talented" too! Peace and have a great day!
Would love to see a storage bench for garden tools pool supplies like the planters- maybe outta pallet wood? Could even add an outdoor cushion for multifunction or cool design on the lid for a dual function as a table. 🤔
Some stores in Australia do charge alot for something very little and easy to make. I have made some of the simpler items for around the home. Keep up the great videos.
A couple months ago I decided to get into woodworking to help pay for gas for my long commute. I was looking at outdoor redwood furniture seeing the profit margins on all of the items some of these companies were making. I just had an "OH DUH!" moment a couple hours ago while binge watching your "high profit smalls" series. Of course i did this after building a prototype 8' picnic table, guess I have a workbench now. haha
You can get advanced angles on a miter saw. Example: If you want a 65 degree cut, double side tape a random piece of wood to the non rotation portion of your miter base then cut it at 20 degrees. Leave it taped down as is and rotate your blade back to 90 degrees. Take the piece you want the 65 on and set it perpendicular to the taped piece so it now sits ahainst the cut at a 20 degree angle to the blade. When you cut the 2nd piece of wood it will create a 65 degree cut. Essentially you've created a 20 degree stop with the 1st piece of wood.
Hi Matt. I'm a beginner to this game and I've been looking for some inspiration for easy projects that I can learn from but also make enough to cover costs etc and your series has been really helpful. I'm from Nottinghamshire, England and although we don't have Big Box Stores we do have similar types of outlets. I visited one today for the first time since watching your videos and found myself looking how things were built or could be reproduced. Thanks for opening my eyes to a way of woodworking and almost certainly the route I will take to get started.
Matthew, you have converted me. I’m going to be building your planter boxes, the anchor and other of your items. What you do I showing cheaper material alternatives is great. Keep it up and can’t wait till the next one
Just found your channel bud, it’s Perfect for me as I have a little workshop (shed) and your ideas are just what I need to get some projects made and sold. I’m in England 🏴 and wood is super expensive so I use lots of wood I find, get given etc. Love your ideas. SUBSCRIBED immediately.
Decals work for the “Love the Adventure” stencil, too. Amazon has a bunch of people who can whip one up for you for a reasonable price. $50 leaves a lot of room for investment. And my 2nd grade crayon scribblin’ chicken scratch ain’t impressing nobody. 🤣
Funny enough, I've seen that fruit display thing at Ashely Furniture, just a bit bigger, and it looks a lot like what you described. I feel like someone at Ashley when to Hobby Lobby, put their Matthew Peech thinking cap on, and upgraded.
Matthew, I saw someone on Neighborhood app selling your farmhouse planters... You are doing a great job. I had a coworker dress the garden basket design. She did flowers, and also thought of magazine basket(for the few print mags left), and gift basket. I make mine out of ceder.
Yes!!! I love the Hobby Lobby videos!! I love all their stuff but if I can make it myself and save money, then that’s a win win!! Thanks for doing these, Matthew! Keep ‘em coming! 👍🏻 Oh and on a personal note…I love the shirts you have on your store! Especially the women ones! 🫶🏻
M8 brilliant again. That really thin plywood thete using not exactly sure over the pond but a no here u get pallets with kike 4-6mm plywood ontop. Great video yhetrs few wee gems in thete to look at. Keep em coming!🏴👍
Thank you. Shouldn’t be any issues bc you are just getting ideas from them and not copying exactly with the same materials and colors and such. Just change it slightly.
I've been pumping out the baskets you showed a while back. Still no sales yet but I'm stocked up now. I can make 1 every half hour at $5 per unit and a resell right of $15-$20. It equals out to $20 and hour.
Another outstanding video, just need to consider that Hobby Lobby almost always has some kind of sale and most of their stuff is 20-40% off, so price accordingly.
These are great ideas... I'd really love to hear from anyone who has had success building and selling items like this. What type of income were you able to achieve?
Love the channel! You've inspired me to make a few different things and get a business going! That being said, I can't for the life of me figure out how you're getting $2 fence pickets. In the ~6 mths I've been using pickets, they've gone from $4 to just under $5. It's still a decent deal considering what i can get for finished products, but you keep saying you're getting them that cheap. I wish!
Matthew, with regards to the chalkboard for the multi-level tray display, what would you say to swapping out the brad nails for screws, and making a separate white dry-erase board to go along with the chalkboard and make them interchangeable to clients who might appreciate the option to have both?
The best part abt this series is that Hobby Lobby is *notorious* for stealing the designs of independent artists, & neither paying them nor crediting them. I got started in woodworking & salvage art after learning Art Journaling & folk art techniques. Not a day went by without an instructor or author finding their original creations copied *in detail* on a piece of Hobby Lobby decor or furniture. Heck, just last weekend, I needed outdoor fabric, & HL was the only local source. Lo & Behold, they had new upholstery fabric, hanging nearby & it copied one of my favorite hand-stitching designers, Alabama Chanin. (Look her up, she's fantastic.) She published five books that literally *taught me* how to sew, & then taught me how to make it beautiful. The thought that a bunch of baby woodworkers are now gonna make Hobby Lobby Decor (but higher quality, & made in the USA) just makes my morning.
When you build something new how many do you usually make too see if it will sell or not? Also can you do a video on online sales like Etsy and and other apps and such that you use? I know you mentioned it but If you did I can’t find the video on it. Thanks for all your videos I became a subscriber day 1 of watching your stuff absolutely amazing buddy keep it up!
I usually just do one or two and I have a lot of luck selling locally so I don’t have to worry about shipping. That’s what tends to work for me. But every location will be different and you’ll have to test your market. I’ll see what I can do, thanks for the idea.
because evryone has a workshop at home full of tools. at the shop you dont pay only for the piece but labour for the piece, logistics and employees at the shop and sort. all these diy stuff needs a bunch of things in advance in order to actually save money on doing these things. it is a fun thing to do of course nothing is wrong with it. simply doesnt actually pays off at the end.
Just subscribed a few days ago because of finding these videos. One question I have is would Facebook be a good place to market this stuff? Also can you try to include more that don't require a table saw? If you can, that would be awesome! Thanks!
Hey bro. I had to stop during the vid when you mentioned the 1/16 plywood. More than likely it is a door skin. 30/68 . I would guess though that it's more expensive than a 1/4 inch luan plywood sheet.
It's been driving me crazy.! I mind got stuck on the really thin plywood.....? I slept late and I'm still working on my 1st thermos of coffee, but I think they could've gotten it from interior doors, the cheep hollow ones.
When dealing with fence pickets or pallet wood in making these projects, how important is it for the wood to be flat and square? Aka should I joint and plane the boards to deal with whatever twist or warp or cupping that is present, or should I toss those boards and keep hunting for something that's not messed up?
Around here the fence pickets are normally dripping with water, my local big box hates that I will sort through a whole bunk of boards and only take 30 or so, I don't want to have to work around the knots😁. I purchase a couple of weeks in advance to keep a running supply on hand, and store them on end so they can dry out, then depending on the project I plane them flat and square the side
Hey Matty Peech! Sorry, I just kind felt like this would be your rap name. I have a request: I have a lot of reclaimed hardwood left inside the storage buildings of an old house I bought in Japan, so I can build some stuff for free. Despite this, it isn't easy to sell stuff for a "nice," higher price, and of course there is also the consideration of the time it takes to build. So, my question for you is, "What five main items do you think would most likely be best for me to build and sell online here, with consideration of time and return?" Thanks so much in advance -- I've been watching you for a while!

M8 brilliant again. That really thin plywood thete using not exactly sure over the pond but a no here u get pallets with kike 4-6mm plywood ontop. Great video yhetrs few wee gems in thete to look at. Keep em coming!🏴👍
These are my favorite videos. One question, is there any legal issues with making and selling a design from hobby lobby?
Thank you. Shouldn’t be any issues bc you are just getting ideas from them and not copying exactly with the same materials and colors and such. Just change it slightly.
Awesome.. Thank you for what you do.
I really like your content, I really need to get started on these projects
Great video! I'm curious to see what you're doing with your laser. Blessings!!!
I've been pumping out the baskets you showed a while back.
Still no sales yet but I'm stocked up now.
I can make 1 every half hour at $5 per unit and a resell right of $15-$20.
It equals out to $20 and hour.
Hello! Would you be able to make a separate video and plans for the farm stand?
Also, thank you for all your hard work and great content :)
Fantastic tips!
Thanks!
Another outstanding video, just need to consider that Hobby Lobby almost always has some kind of sale and most of their stuff is 20-40% off, so price accordingly.
The home centers have 1/8” plywood in the cabinet department for some type of filler panels.
Or, make the chalkboard so it flips/swings to have the dry erase board on the other side.
How do you handle shipping & shipping cost? Local pickup? These items don’t fit in standard priority boxes. Thanks for all the insight. 🙏🏻
I prefer to sell local actually
@@MatthewPeechWoodworking Cool thank you. Appreciate all the vids. Your making my life better. Blessings.
@@MatthewPeechWoodworking anytime! thanks for the reply! I haven’t been able to catch you early enough with new videos till now 😅
they have a dowel rod for drilling hole mine it round it got different size holes i seen your other video but it clams with a all tread
because evryone has a workshop at home full of tools. at the shop you dont pay only for the piece but labour for the piece, logistics and employees at the shop and sort. all these diy stuff needs a bunch of things in advance in order to actually save money on doing these things. it is a fun thing to do of course nothing is wrong with it. simply doesnt actually pays off at the end.
Hey I have a question for you. How long do you wait before building something with treated pickets? Ones I get are always damp and clog sandpaper
Muito bem!
You are the bomb!!
MAtt is just running around hobby barn with a tape measure making everybody lol
Just subscribed a few days ago because of finding these videos. One question I have is would Facebook be a good place to market this stuff? Also can you try to include more that don't require a table saw? If you can, that would be awesome! Thanks!
Yes, several success stories people send me have been from them just posting on Facebook. Welcome to the channel!
@@MatthewPeechWoodworking Awesome! I will certainly try that. Thank you!!
@J anything that he does on a table saw, you can do with a skillsaw or jigsaw. Use what you have.
Hey Matt love the videos. What did you do to create the grey/ lt blue like look on the anchor sections?
I’m very new at this wood making but I have to say I’m proud of this how do I add a pix
For the fence pickets. Do you set them out to age before you use them?
Hey bro. I had to stop during the vid when you mentioned the 1/16 plywood. More than likely it is a door skin. 30/68 . I would guess though that it's more expensive than a 1/4 inch luan plywood sheet.
do you have a build video or plans for the 2 dressers in the background i would love to make this for my kid
Look at boat parts under marine maintenance and parts so many different options
It's been driving me crazy.! I mind got stuck on the really thin plywood.....? I slept late and I'm still working on my 1st thermos of coffee, but I think they could've gotten it from interior doors, the cheep hollow ones.
Its called Luan plywood.
Where do you get your fence pickets? My Home Depot and lowes leave them outside in a very shaded area and they are all warped and possibly moldy.
I get them at our big box stores and thankfully they are usually in pretty good shape.
This is it, these are your mountains lol
