    The roses don't look bad considering the weather we're having Jay Jay and Donna's garden is looking great, very colourful. Black spot is a big problem for everyone this year, yours are holding up really well especially with no feed for most of the season ! Thanks for the tour, you have a lot of new growth and a bit of sun is all we need and they'll be flowering again, the forecast is looking better next week and rest of August hopefully some dry days 🤞

      Hopefully Linda, as I just said above you didn’t get to see the front but there’s quite a few roses there hitting second flush now that I waited patiently for this year, they have taken a beating this past week. Many of the flowers just balled up or misfired on opening. There are still buds there to come so will see what happens next week. ;)

    I think your garden is looking very nice J.J. Said before how much I love the colour of the Gladioli and the Hot Lips Salvia is a stunner. Your grass is looking good too. You have a lot to mow there and it's my least favourite garden job to do. I think our plants are confused with the strange weather this year. Rosemary Harkness is another one for my list of "wants". Stunning colour.

    Jay if you want a good soil. Make a compost heap using everything from kitchen waste (nothing cooked). Wet cardboard. Wet shredded paper etc. Every year we used to spread it thick in Spring. Now we are too old but I still compost. Plants from your wife’s cottage garden with seed heads will revisit by seeding themselves in the beds.

      @@Jay_Jay Hi Jay, I’ve been composting for years and a spade goes through my soil like a knife through butter. You only need a simple wire bin. 4 large pieces joined by ties. Let the sun and rain get to it. Turn it every now and again. There are some good books on it. It’s a fascinating subject believe me. I wish I could send you photos how lovely my garden was. I was a gardener like your wife. Real cottage garden. Have only gone over to roses and shrubs because of my age.

    Hi there…Rabbit’s in the Garden, your Greyhound Must feel in Heaven 😂, i would not dare not to feed my Roses in Potts, they have nowhere else to go for nutrients so ifyou starve them…in the Soil they can still search for left overs…Blackspot here is allover, Windrush has barely a leaf left…CPM, Golden Celebration…they all have some …so what, next year will be better ❤❤❤

    • @Jay_Jay
      @Jay_Jay  11 місяців тому +1

      Made me smile. That’s the spirit. The roses in pots particularly the ones getting good sun they are doing well now but I fed them pretty early in the season when I could see they were a little stagnant. It won’t be something I will be repeating. The ones in the ground done ok for first flush and only now it is clear they needed food. The reason I haven’t put food down now it is clear is because it’s a little late in the season and I’m kinda hoping the roots are busy reaching out and searching for the left overs as you said. That’s the logic anyway. So come next year they will be stronger for it. But they will be all getting fed. :)

    Don't beat yourself up about not feeding - most of us out here are still waiting for a second flush on our DA roses too! I think it's the lack of sun and excessive rain causing this. This time last year I was sitting on the decking surrounded by roses in flower, but not this year. And if you only have one good rose to show off today, it's a stunner! You have lots of other colour and interest to enjoy while you wait for the next big show of roses.

    • @Jay_Jay
      @Jay_Jay  11 місяців тому +1

      Hi nik, if I had made it to the front garden you’d have seen. That was my intention. The majority of the roses in that front are approaching or hitting second flush something I’ve had to wait for this year. But when it happens we’re hit with the relentless rain and many failing to open, battered or balling. Only fruity Parfuma in that front garden has hit 3rd flush but she’s stripped naked. The potted roses in the centre and at the end of my back garden get great sun and they’ve been fed. The ones in the ground there I’m still waiting on. Interesting what you say. Last year for instance boscobel flowered relentlessly, multiple heavy flushes, Olivia, Gabriel oak the same. Now I’m still waiting on that lane and the ones that should have opened got hit the past 2 weeks with wet weather. It’s still bare naked lane. Just when things started to finally show promise we are hit, bang have that. So that entire front garden im still waiting on an actual display of second flush. Looking out there now only Amadeus, timeless cream, timeless purple and Leonardo holding on. The rest a balled up mess or still waiting on.

    Hi Jay Jay, this year has been, in terms of weather, very unusual, so it is not to be expected that the garden will perform at its best. Better days will come...
    Sometimes we have to give the plants time to establish themselves and, roses are no exception. Maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to give Carolyn Knight a chance! Here's the tip...
    The plant with the lovely blue flower is a Salvia. Bye 🙂

    • @Jay_Jay
      @Jay_Jay  11 місяців тому +1

      Hi there. You are of course correct, many roses need more time and all should be given that chance to strengthen. I know for a fact some roses take time to settle so I know you are correct and I should have added this. The problem I have is two fold. I have a number of potted roses looking to go in the ground. They have been potted for some time and space in the ground is a premium hence abit of a not so clear dilemma. The second thing is that is a pretty exposed spot to wind rain and sunshine. Its been said this rose doesn’t fair too well under these conditions despite its beauty. Again I should have added this.
      This rose and delightful Parfuma both I’m still unsure of. If I had an extra 30 feet of garden bed I can assure you I wouldn’t have suggested it. What I say here doesn’t take away the fact you are correct. More time.

    Hi Jay-Jay! Great video as always. You've done it again, lol, I put Rosemary Harkness on my wish list. The nice thing about orange roses is that they supply that pop of color we all need. I have one that I rescued from my Mom's garden (America? ) that just sings and livens up the garden when she blooms. And, she usually blooms quite a bit except for this year, of course, haha. I think the fertilizing is a must - I know I have to from now on. I've been better about it this year but my plants took such a hit with the two late frosts that I think it's difficult for them to respond. They are confused, lol. Soil gets depleted and compost is great but it doesn't supply all. Big aha moment for me when I read that compost (manure) is really quite weak in nutrients for plants. Great to get the micro's going but that's about it. I've been fertilizing with a Bonide product and have seen some new growth but I'm curious to what you use to fertilize your roses?

    • @Jay_Jay
      @Jay_Jay  11 місяців тому +1

      Rosmary harkness it’s like an amber orange pink colour, unusual and I think amongst other roses it’s colour does get drawn out in a very positive way. Fantastic to see from a window or up close. Lovely fragrance I’m very happy with mine. The only thing I put down this year was plant based organic mulch. A good thick layer all over my beds and on my pots but I don’t think it was enough without any feed at all. Not with my soil anyway. I will feed my roses next year for sure. :)

      From my situation here in the final bleak month of a NZ winter, your garden looks amazing.
      Just love Rosemary Harkness. I always like Harkness roses - and their distinctive ruffled petals - and the color is beautiful 😍.
      Re Mme Alfred Alfred Carriere, I've had it for probably fifteen years and find it to be one of the most vigorous and hardy roses imaginable. It is considered to be one of the best roses for growing in shade. I just let mine grow in a woodland area and scramble up trees. It also takes extremely readily from cuttings.
      That little white daisy growing next to the pretty purple geranium is, I believe, feverfew - really a herb.
      The lovely purple-blue flower you asked about is a salvia, I think. And the other one in the back with tall spires is probably an astilbe - although I couldn't see it properly.
      I would guess your soil (I nearly put soul 😄) is perfectly fine but that because the roses in the ground are competing for nutrients with the perennials, that they do need the extra nutrients that feeding them would provide.
      But a wonderful garden tour. Thanks once again. And your wife's Hot Lips? salvia as well as her dahlias and echinacea are so pretty.

    • @Jay_Jay
      @Jay_Jay  11 місяців тому +1

      @@helenthompson5926 hi Helen. The Madame Alfred I don’t disagree it’s a magnificent rose with huge reputation for growing. I have two, both currently potted. The one that was in the back garden just appeared a little uncomfortable as the summer drew on. It got fantastic sun there from early morning until sunset. We had a very hot June and I think that’s when the troubles started. It may have been from her young age I know but it’s flowers did not last and it’s growth was stunted compared to the other one I have in the front garden that received afternoon shade. We have also had relentless wind this year and that position is very exposed, but the front garden gets more shelter. Hence me deciding to move her. Both will remain potted for this year but hopefully with some height added to them they will go in the ground next year and with the added height I’m hoping replacing snow princess at the front won’t be as noticeable :) that’s my logic anyway. Thank Helen

    Sounds like this is a year to be proud of having any roses at all! I thought we were going to see a complete disaster of brown ruined roses & dead canes & bare earth. As others have commented, it wasn't that bad, at least some of the "supporting cast" took over when the "stars" of the show couldn't show up. I have not ever heard that not fertilizing potted roses works, unless you use a time release fertilizer in spring. I think any rose in the ground less than 5 years or in poor soil should definitely be fertilized. The Master Gardeners in my area did say that alfalfa pellets in the spring should do the job; I prefer liquid fertilizer as it's easier to apply & I am a lazy gardener. Also, Heirloom roses here in the US is very adamant about granular fertilizer being bad for roots. Here's wishing you a bounteous flowering inlate spring/fall flush.

      Hi. Thankfully I didn’t get to the front garden which was my intention, then I think you would have seen. Many roses just failed to open for second flush in the rain. Yes the potted roses I identified as needing food early in the season and logic led me to feed them. The ones in the ground they seemed to do ok for first flush but it’s at a point now I’m under no illusions my roses need food my soil just isn’t good enough. Mulch alone isn’t cutting it. Comparing my roses to previous years when they were younger were flowering more. Looking back over old footage it’s clear. I won’t be doing that again. :)

    It's rained once this summer here on Vancouver Island, Canada, and I've been struggling with powdery mildew and spider mites. On the plus side I haven't had to deal with balling! 😆

      Wow. A lovely part of the world you live. I didn’t tacos it was so dry there. We did have a very dry spell but its come back the complete opposite way now. I can assure you I know what I’d prefer between an extended rainy and dry spell. :) hope you get a decent spot of rain soon.

      @@Jay_Jay we're considered sub Mediterranean here (on the south Island) so our rainy season won't start again until October. Even though it rarely rains in the summer our temps stays around 20C so it's quite comfortable... Maybe we can trade for a little while, summer rain sounds heavenly! 😉😁

    1:20 Yes, here in Ohio, my Francois Rabellait has black spot. My 50 by 300 feet vegetable garden has demanded too much of my time with weeding,thinning carrots etc. to take time to seek a solution for the black spot. If it were fatal, then I would let everything set and seek a solution. 2:23 Yes, I had to fence in my 5 30 foot long rows of carrots, in the night, while I slept, the rabbits were relieving my carrots of their leaves. I was having thoughts of hassenpfeffer. Anyhow, the carrots have returned to 90% normal with 2 growing months left.
    4:48 Yes, I am gardening 50+ years now, growing nearly everything and the past year or so, I have a sort of "revelation" that we are growing many plants that to do occur naturally anywhere. What we are growing are recessive genetic traits that have been coaxed out into existence by hundreds and thousands of years of selection. So, our "unnaturals" have "unnatural" requirements, such a fertilizer, fungiceds etc. 9:52 Really nice gladioli color. 12:37 Yes, during the coldest time of winter, I shovel horse maure on the dormant plants. The coldest part of winter so that the frezzing and thawing will break it down into a form that can be cultivated into the soil. Thank you for sharing, interesting to see which reisisted disease and whicj did not resist.

      It sounds like you have a really big garden would love to see it? Yes my soil at least needs feed I think. I see other gardens seem to do so well without feed but mine I think is lacking this year and suspect the soil isn’t as suitable. That said now we have had some sun this past day or two the roses are starting to wake up I’ve been surprised.

      The vegetable garden is 50 feet by 300 feet planted as densely as possible. $ types of dry beans, cannellinis, two colors of kidney beans, and borlotti beans, then yellow wax beans, then Kentucky Wonder green beans that I have on thin 12 foot tall wooden poles from the woods, then cauliflower, early , midseason and late cabbages, Chinese cabbage that I use to make kimchi with, purple cabbages, green and purple kohlrabbi, many varieties from the 1890s. New England pie pumkins, acorn squash, zuccinni squash yellow crookneck squash, cucumbers, butternut squash, cavolo nere also called Dino Kale, cippollini onions, scarlet runner beans on tall poles for the hummingbirds, and brussells sprouts and Genovese basil and Goliath tomatoes.
      The fower garden begins the year with crocus, snowdrops, next tete a tete and various other daffodils, then hyacinths, tall bearde irises next, lupines, then the roses, David Austin and old heirloom roses light up, next are orietal lilies that go taller than I am releasing their clouds of perfume. Tuberoses and dahlias.
      Is there an email where I could send you photos?? Nearly midnight here in ohio, must move on. Thank you for your words of encouragement!

    Perhaps lack of feeding is where I'm going wrong. Which feed do you recommended for roses?

    • @Jay_Jay
      @Jay_Jay  11 місяців тому +2

      I’m honestly the wrong person to ask Catherine. Do you not feed your roses? I’ve tried a few different things over the past few years and all I thought were ok. But I am always confused about dosages. When you read the instructions on the side it’s like the krypton factor or perhaps I’m just dumb. The manufacturers I believe make it deliberately confusing in an attempt to make you use more than is required. But I think the most important thing is regardless of brand, not to overfeed them if you use pellet or granular feed. My Maths I worked out a SMALL handful evenly around the base. Last year I used cheap rose feed from Wilkos and it was good. Next year I will try liquid seaweed in addition to the twice yearly feed. From what I’ve tested you dont have to be quite so careful on dosages of liquid seaweed. But it is expensive.

      My friend just feeds her roses horse manure…… even fresh, which I thought was a no no…… however, her roses are amazing, full blooms, no black spot, and looking so healthy. She doesn’t feed them anything else. They obviously love it! I’ve just moved, so when my roses are planted out, I’m getting bags full of manure from her!! We are in Shropshire, and my David Austin roses had black spot last year quite bad, I did pull all the leaves off, re mulched and cut back, so far this spring, none to see yet.
