    I didn't realize this was by Elyot! I saw the original trailer for it when he posted it in the Prismata discord, but didn't realize the clips I was seeing in your Discord were of the same game.
    I really hope he will have a chance to create a game more inline with his original vision, assuming he still wants that - a competitive 3d puzzler sounds incredible

      @IcelyPuzzles  6 місяців тому +3

      it's been really great to follow Elyot's stuff through Prismata/JIS/now this, but yeah, it's funny how the trailer ended up giving a certain vibe to the game and experiencing how different those areas really were. and totally agree about still wanting that original vision, but I kinda have the feeling if it even happens as a different game it's going to have to not share a lot mechanicswise with this game lol

    This was a really fun watch, it's surprising how many of the grid puzzles you made for the game as they were also by far my favourite puzzle type offered as they ranged from being extremely intuitive and satisfying to solve to what felt like easter egg hunts that'd give me a laugh after finding the solution for, and I also agree that I hoped that the other types of puzzles offered were more consistently as fun as them. Glad your channel is doing so well now as they way your videos have been structured has changed so much over the years and it seems like you've got something that works really well for you now (and hopefully is enjoyable for you to make as well). Sort of miss watching your older videos now and then, but I completely understand you privating/deleting stuff that isn't on theme with what you do anymore.

    42:47 I think the questions/issues with always online would halve if the servers were designed to handle the load. At the launch the servers were absolute dogwater, constant rubberbanding and random tps, the friend and party system had no purpose and doesnt even work. Currently servers got better, but last time i played the party system still didnt work and servers still had some issues. Always online feels like something forced with no purpose, even if it's remnants of a potentially cool mechanic. Or it's another attempt to "protect" the product from piracy costing the performance and overall user experience, like denuvo. Which is a fairly good way, but like with denuvo there will be a crazy human somewhere out there that will embed a local server into the package and just connect client to it

  • @BleachWizz

    33:08 - oooh this should've come in pairs. somewhere where you can see a sort of a mirror, it'd be broken but the puzzles would be "reflecting" like one in each side.
    then you solve one and realize the other is a different one, and then you see they're the same but the clues are flipped and that would've been so beautiful.

    This and taiji? 750 puzzles in ioi ? I’ve been watching you here and there but I never knew you made games somehow. Also islands of insight is the best game I’ve seen in a long time. I know the numbers ain’t great but it’s a puzzle game and those always require a foot in the door for the players to get hooked.

    You wrote a *fifth* of the grid puzzles? You absolute mad lad, I'm pre-ordering your productivity book. And they're good puzzles too.
    I can't help but feel a lot of good work and effort is hamstrung by platform choices. Most forms of puzzles would just make more sense on touch screens. Failing that, running on a laptop with hidden object games specs just multiplies your addressable market to a scale that applies to few other genres. That video of CtC in the glass maze should be mandatory viewing for game devs, reminding them that you are not your audience.
    And I still don't know why the ticking clock of always online is there. I don't understand why there are cosmetic gloves but not backgrounds, palettes, cursors or texture packs; a player will at least see the latter. I also feel the game needlessly antagonizes a lot of audiences that not fluent in a major language. A lot of the game text could have been sketches and GIFs, and it would even increase info retention for native speakers.
    There's a lot of care and elegance put in a lot of small and silly things, you can feel the love there, and this just makes the places it goes astray bewildering.

    Meniscus gave me a lot of trouble; the mystery was worded in a way that made it sound like I had to treat the numbers as being one-off as well. The puzzle box is pretty cool, though.

    Can't believe you worked on this game and taiji! I'm halfway through it and I'm loving it, I vividly remember the puzzle at 8:00, it was my favourite of that enclave! Also, the pillar Taiji puzzle you gave the base idea for was a great one.
    But I do have one question, I've been trying to get into playtesting puzzle games (started with a small one where I knew the developer and another one with a dev still small, but that had already made a bit more well-known puzzle games) and I was wondering if you had any advice on where to search for more puzzle games to playtest, because I'm really loving it!
    Advice on how to be a better playtester from your experience would be nice too, but I don't wanna be asking too much so if you answered my first question only it would already be great!

    • @IcelyPuzzles
      @IcelyPuzzles  6 місяців тому +1

      there is a 'puzzlevideogames' community, and also you can find games that are about to release on Steam Next Fest (who tend to have demos up and maybe a small discord server to join), or give feedback to developers on itchio
      finding cheese is cool, have the mouse cursor shown if you can. Another thing that's very different about producing content and testing is that I think developers would prefer a mostly uncut recording even if it means lots of repetitive footage, I believe they will know to skim through it if it's too repetitive. making guest puzzles is also a good way to improve your own puzzlecreating skills and leverage past guest puzzle experience for future developers you ask, like I did with this game :)

    This game looks so interesting and promising, which is absolutely tragic since there's a 99% chance that the servers shut down and nobody can ever play it again. I refuse to let myself get attached to something with such a disappointing shelf-life. If the developers can eventually remove the always-online thing (since it's just a leftover) then I would be willing to give this game a shot.

    • @IcelyPuzzles
      @IcelyPuzzles  6 місяців тому

      the director of this game has expressed not wanting to allow the game to get shut down in such a way that years worth of work will be unplayable. I get the situation is different since the guy has a publisher in the loop (so not-100% control) but the previous game, Prismata, was a game that also unfortunately didn't find a big audience (only a small dedicated group of big fans) and I saw the director made sure to keep the servers alive even throughout AWS issues and while working on this project. I do also get that the "team looking for new work" does potentially imply and leave the option open though, I wish it was more clear what was actually being stopped. but keeping servers alive just (subjectively, I dunno the values myself) should be much less than paying a team of 20 salaries for continued work.
      But yeah there have been talks about having an offline mode. To me that would still be a sad ending instead of implementing some competitive or leaderboard feature to try to wrangle this game to multiplayer but it is sad that the launch window opportunity is kind of past that.

So I view the the black as whole section rather than individual section. I didn't get it until I saw a post in discussion thread about it
    Edit after watching the whole video:
    I still think going multiplayer is bad idea. In general puzzle games has much smaller audience. Even if there are competitive elements, at its core it is still a puzzle game. I don't think it would attract wide audience just because there are competitive aspect in game. And hosting online game is expensive too, if it didn't do well, there is chance of constantly losing money with server cost.
    Realiscaly they should have at least start as single player game and maybe if it is sale well, then add the multiple player aspect

    • @IcelyPuzzles
      @IcelyPuzzles  6 місяців тому

      puzzle games do have a rep of being niche yeah. it's weird though, cause some puzzle games are able to really break that 'niche' barrier, baba/portal/witness/supraland have tons of reviews and the very start of IOI it was pitched as being potentially able to pick up these kinds of players and retain them. so I personally feel it should have been truly multiplayer from the start, it's also harder to suddenly program multiplayer into the game afterwards i think. "multiplayer puzzle game" is at least a unique genre (both to pitch potential investors and for players), instead of "another great singleplayer puzzle game"

      for specific moments, you can often start the puzzle by building around that interaction, and then what remains afterwards if it doesn't fill the rest of the grid you can add more clues and symbols, it's also possible to cut off the grid with a 'null' cell or adjust the size to remove those ambiguous cells entirely, and you end up with a unique solution

      I recommend you learn python and use CPMpy. It's a solver for logical puzzles. you tell it the constraints and it will figure out the answers and total number of possible solutions to these kinds of puzzles. With it you can then quickly prototype new rules and constraints in puzzles. Also create a quick UI for it.

    I was secretly hoping for a 4x4 logic grid where the solution is the Lingo smile

      I have a puzzle that draws the word "HI" as a kinda lingo reference lol
      but making an interesting 4x4 is hard :p but that would be very fun

    Considering you worked on it, how do you feel about the lack of success it had?
    Personally I find it unfortunate, as it is a great and fun game, but some decisions made were a bit questionable... So I wasn't surprised... Still, hope the game will one day still get the treatment it deserves.

    I was very excited for the game and recently tried the demo, but it just didn't click with me. I think that I would 100% buy the game if it was just a level select into the logic grids and no more than that.

      Btw I haven’t played Islands yet (I wish to eventually), but is there a way to also contribute puzzles to the game for DLCs or something? I don’t imagine there is, but I’m asking just in case.

    Wish i could actually buy the game though but russia is banned from purchasing this =/
    ...Which was weird to learn since the pre-release playtesting *was* allowed in here
