Thanks for the complements! :) One of the reasons I keep going with these videos is because the audience is so positive and friendly (most of the time).
I have speakers that are powered from wall socket (AC). Can I cut there wire and add a USB head to them to power them from my PCs USB port or is it not so simple? Please help. PS awesome video, love your channel.
Incredible to watch this today and see just how far you've come, in terms of both project scope and the production values of the videos. I've got so many projects I'm inspired to work on, so thank you for doing what you do.
dude! i was just watching one of your recent videos and got this vague memory of watching you yeeears ago converting some sony ericsson speakers... and it turns out it was actually you! my converted speakers are still going strong after all these years. legend!
I have to say your DIY are the best among all those I have seen. Well shot, edited, explained, edited.. No rubbish, Just pure DIY. (And I think few snapshots of layout will only add to already great video) And thanks for your awesome videos and replies.
I did this a few days ago but used the jack, button, and microphone from a pair of smart phone headphones. I haven't used the speakers much so far but they work pretty well and provide decent sound powered by a 10,000 mAH battery pack/charger. Total cost was less than $20 with the added bonus of putting soldering skills developed long ago as a calibration specialist and biomedical equipment tech to use after many years of neglect. Tip: don't count on the rosin core from the solder. A light coat of flux from a lead-free plumbing repair kit on the wires made tinning and soldering very quick. I squeezed out a bit and dragged the wire ends through the flux and when touched to the iron the solder wicked right into the wire. The ear bud wire strands were individually coated but a bit of flux and bead of solder on the iron quickly dealt with the coating.
Excellent tutorial, I found an old set of these speakers the other day and was planning on doing this to them. I found your video and followed your steps, it worked perfect first time! Thanks a million mate, this little mod is after saving me the cost of buying new portable speakers! Thumbs up!!
Wow, I've already watched lots of the newer content on this channel and now I randomly found you again when looking for these speakers! 😀 (I was searching for a 3d printable grill for them to prevent my son from damaging the membranes.) My grandfather did this mod for me probably around the same time as this video was released, when I replaced my Sony Ericsson W580i with a Sony Xperia Go in 2012. 🙂
Excellent video! My old MPS-70 speakers were just laying around collecting dust, and I didn't want to throw them away because I always thought they sounded awesome for speakers of their size. Now I have converted them using this video and use them with my laptop and with my new phone. In the latter case I just stick the USB cable in a 5V (5W) adapter which I had since earlier and plug it into the wall socket. I'm definitely bringing these babies with me out to the cabin this weekend. Thanks!
Finally I was able get my hand on one of these and mod them accordingly ^^ Worked like a charm though I think the USB cable I used has a cable break. Everytime I touch the USB cable the power gets lost for a split second. Will just replace the USB cable and all is perfect :) Thanks for this cool tutorial.
I followed your guide and successfully converted my speakers. These little things really sound great. Thank you. Btw, great videos on your channel. Keep up the good work.
bruh what a good idea, I actually just salvaged the amps and made another project, but I will definitelly try to do this as soon as I get one of these speakers
Thanks ... my MPS-70 was long time lay in shelf .... BUT today I connect with pigtail of USB and 3,5 jack ... AND SOUND WELL .... thanks for your DIY step by step ... I dont buy new but repair old ones. Thanks again ... (y)
Thanks for the video! I managed to convert the MPS-70 into 3.5mm + USB speakers. Sounds so good in a small package. Great on my Acer Iconia A500 Tablet as it has a full-size USB port already.
You are one of my favorite youtuber & i am pleasantly surprised to see this video as i had these laying around & was looking to convert them to audio jack Thanks for instructions & keep up the good work 👍
guess what? i have the exact speakers back in the days except it has a gray face plate. i followed the wiring diagram here and it works awesome! it's a good thing i kept it since these tiny speakers sound decent and so loud 😀
The process of converting the MS-410's should be very similar (same contacts etc), but I expect that its connector is mounted directly onto a PCB, rather than wires, so the challenge would be soldering your usb connections etc to it. The only way to find out would be to open it up, and Sony's stuff is usually quite hard to get into.
To power the speakers from a battery, just get three AA batteries in series (no more than three, and you'll probably need a battery holder) and attach the black cable to the - side of the batteries, and the red cable to the + side of the batteries. :)
It needs the USB connector for the power, while the audio comes in through the 3.5mm jack. To make it 100% USB operated would require some kind of USB audio interface.
I did the same mod with the first of these type of Ericsson speakers. Good as mobile speakers, especially if you also have a batterybank to use along with your smartphone or music player.
Running from batteries is fine, as the voltage range of the amp is something like 3.7v - 5.7v. Great way to listen to music from a phone or MP3 player, where no usb port is available.
Hello, there is no advantage to directly accessing the PCB as the wires go directly to it anyway, so there is no difference in sound quality. It's perfect quality stereo, and sounds fantastic. :)
There are some basic unspoken 'rules' in that usually black is ground, red is live etc, but that's all. You can usually find out what colour wires do what by looking at the circuit board, and trying to figure it out that way.
Yes, be careful of that if you try this build. The wire is rubbery, and incredibly difficult to strip cleanly. I tried 3 times, each time nicking the wires. Easy enough to fix with some electrical tape, though, so it wasn't really an issue.
awesome to see videos where you started from! I wonder if you can do this to convert it to USB-C, without using any other connection for power supply :)
Not really usb speakers, but usb-powered. If you buy one of those small usb audio adapters, you can make it so you only need to plug in the usb cable into computer. Basically, those speakers(audio card really) would appear as a separate audio device to the system.
I have a USB wire and jack only speakers, They have socket for power input. My question is, how do i connect the (Red and White wires of the Jack(which broke)) to the (4 wires of USB). Basically I want to replace the jack head with a USB.... Thanks....
Only if the device has the ability to give power from its micro usb connection. I doubt many devices do (though my Nokia N900 does), but some Apple products have the option. You could of course hardwire it directly to the phone's battery connections...
Great sound for the money invested. Can be used as travel speakers for laptop and phone. Important is to use a good quality USB cable and jack. If you use some cheap cables it might not work, it happent to me, cheap wiring bad signal or not at all!
Try going through all the connections again, and making sure you've got them right. But first, check that the volume on the device you're plugging it into is at full.
You'd have to be a lot more specific than that :) do you mean passive 'bookshelf' speakers that work with most hi-fi players? If so, you could just add a jack to the wires (combine the ground signals) and just attach them directly. That's what I've done with my PC and the sound quality blows away any 'active pc speakers' you can buy in the shops.
great video.question if i wanted to make it blue tooth can this process be made or no? will u make a video on how to make any speaker blue tooth with the amp as ur other video adding components like headphones, like the boom box u made but just with more stuff lol ur videos are awesome and i can understand everything in ur step by steps ..nice work
if you do this mod you can use one of those portable phone chargers (which are essentially batteries with a usb port) to use it with your phone/tablet/mp3player etc.. on the go
s there some kind of connecting cable to buy so it can be attached to the original sony ericcson cable and just go to usb without cutting rewiring and everything else. so like usb A to usb B ?
pretty clever stuff :) i have a question for you. i have a set of usb speakers for my pc if i put the volume up too loud (not very loud) theres whining and crackling interference when theyre not outputting sound? do you know why? would be nice if you could do a few more techy diy projects that cover something like my prolem and other things too.
I had done this myself over 3 years ago - only difference being that I initially used a 9v battery. I eventually made a USB cable with a 9v battery connector on the end.
Just saw this video yesterday, and did the mod...Awesome :) . Now I have an iPhone and I´m gonna try to make something work...I have an old Android phone that doesn´t work normally, but is powering up...So I´m gonna try to use that as a source for the power and my iPhone for music. You think this would work? And one more thing :) , what´s the name of the song you play in this video ? :)
hi, great explanation! i have one of these but i've seen in several videos that is better to keep the build in pcb twich comes with it and power it from usb and then conecting the audio jack to these pcb. is there a big difference in the sound between doing that and doing it your way? Because i have to say your way is easier but i want to keep the sound of these little speakers! Thanks in advance Thanks
sir i think your the one who can help me. my laptop female headphone jack is broken i dont want to open it, im afraid to damage my laptop. is the ordinary headphone jack (male) can be converted into a usb jack? thank you and looking forward to answer my question. more videos to come!
hey i have speakers with just those two things to plug into the laptop but it doesnt work, do you by chance have any other methods on how i can get it to work? im abit coward and think i'll mess the whole thing if i try this method you showed.
If you don't fancy doing this project, here's something you could just buy from Amazon instead that's pretty much the same: amzn.to/2iqQSo7
Man, few days ago I saved a speaker like this from the trashcan thinking I could do something with it! :)

@@KamranKhan-ew2yd u cannot just add a USB cable as ur speaker would contain rectifier circuits and transformers first you have to remove them

Haha, nice one! The speakers fetured here are still around and used occasionally, too!
Wow, a 10 year old video helps me today xD
I now wanna rebuild my MPS-70 to a bluetooth box and I hoped to find the pin-out detail in your vid ^^
Recent comment that's not over 5 years old. Good video, and shows that you've come a long way in the quality of the projects and videos.
I have to say your DIY are the best among all those I have seen.
Well shot, edited, explained, edited.. No rubbish, Just pure DIY.

Good to see your soldering has got better over the years.

The price of the speakers, solder, shrink tubing, and headphones was less than $20. This price did not include the power pack.

This is a fun and easy project to get people used to doing soldering and electrical jobs… great job. Thanks.
A 9 years ago video with this incredible quality.. wow i'm speechless

Love your videos BTW Matt!
Fantastic! :) I hope you enjoy using them as USB speakers!

Oh didn't realise. I've got the MPS-60 which are have the amp in the connector part rather than one of the speakers. Thanks for your help!
I followed your guide and successfully converted my speakers. These little things really sound great. Thank you. Btw, great videos on your channel. Keep up the good work.
bruh what a good idea, I actually just salvaged the amps and made another project, but I will definitelly try to do this as soon as I get one of these speakers
Thank you for this tutorial! I thought i will not have any use form these speakers, and now you proved me wrong!
i was about to throw the speakers, decided to googled about converting it and found this. Awesome video

Came here for learn some tricks by this legend
To power the speakers from a battery, just get three AA batteries in series (no more than three, and you'll probably need a battery holder) and attach the black cable to the - side of the batteries, and the red cable to the + side of the batteries. :)
Time to revive my old mps-70s....
Great job! I've been looking for this for a while and your video is the best.
It needs the USB connector for the power, while the audio comes in through the 3.5mm jack. To make it 100% USB operated would require some kind of USB audio interface.
Works flawlessly! Now listening to the video through them! Thanks!
Amazing stuff, just what I needed. Thanks a bunch!
I did the same mod with the first of these type of Ericsson speakers. Good as mobile speakers, especially if you also have a batterybank to use along with your smartphone or music player.

I recognize that pilot of old good AIWA HI-Fi system ;) I have almost the same pilot from a little older NSX TR-99 model than Yours ;) Greetings!
You'll have to find a hardware store or something. Ebay is also a great place to buy it from.
There are some basic unspoken 'rules' in that usually black is ground, red is live etc, but that's all. You can usually find out what colour wires do what by looking at the circuit board, and trying to figure it out that way.
My sister just found hers and we were wondering if we could turn them to be useful again, thanks!
Yes, be careful of that if you try this build. The wire is rubbery, and incredibly difficult to strip cleanly. I tried 3 times, each time nicking the wires. Easy enough to fix with some electrical tape, though, so it wasn't really an issue.
Thanks man :D I'm gonna do this and if they go loud enough I'm gonna fit them to my motorcycle.
i dont get it , u said ur turning a jack speakers to usb ones , so why did u connect the speakers jack cable to ur laptop?
You look so young :)
Hello, may I know that which wire you cut very first ( which has five cables with blue color signal wire ) in this video?
Amazing video dude, have mps-100 model, is possible change to usb ??
awesome to see videos where you started from! I wonder if you can do this to convert it to USB-C, without using any other connection for power supply :)
interesting idea but a little but misleading title. if powered was added to the end it would be more accurate
LordDrachenbluxzc
Yes you are true.. usb is only meant to power right?
This is really good. I want to change my stereo speakers USB and outlet. I just dont know how..
Nice video my friend. I have a question, I just can use that 3.5mm jack ? I mean, I wanna use it for any smartphone, you know ? No only for a laptop.
Thank you. I have these. and i fortunately i see this video. Awesome.
Not really usb speakers, but usb-powered. If you buy one of those small usb audio adapters, you can make it so you only need to plug in the usb cable into computer. Basically, those speakers(audio card really) would appear as a separate audio device to the system.
But there would still be no connection to the amplifier in the speakers?
Hi. Could you give an example of such USB Audio adaptor that you speak of? Sorry, noobie here...
The amp is in one of the speakers, not in the connector.
I have a USB wire and jack only speakers, They have socket for power input.
My question is, how do i connect the (Red and White wires of the Jack(which broke)) to the (4 wires of USB).
Basically I want to replace the jack head with a USB.... Thanks....
i remember those, they got preety good quality

That doesn't turn them into USB speakers. They just get powered from USB, that's all.
+scarystuff1970 This bugs me tremendously....
agreed. you can buy that kinda speaker very cheap
The best USB speakers in the world :)
Great sound for the money invested. Can be used as travel speakers for laptop and phone. Important is to use a good quality USB cable and jack. If you use some cheap cables it might not work, it happent to me, cheap wiring bad signal or not at all!
I Have 2 of these... I already made one like this but do you think i can connect the other 2 together for surround sound?
Only that you ought to check the left and right wiring, and maybe the jack you used. :)
I love this sound though
Nice job Matt
Try going through all the connections again, and making sure you've got them right. But first, check that the volume on the device you're plugging it into is at full.
Thanks dude, your videos are awesome, you should make more. Have fun :)
I need this video for long time thanks yor videos are good maybel
Do you think USB type C would draw enough power so these could be powered by a modern smartphone port?
Can i connect two separate speakers (have only +, - wires) in this method?
OMGGG IT WORKS - i done this, wooohooo
video could have beeen slower though, iit was hard to keep up wid u
Do you mean "heat-shrink"? It's available at most electronic shops (although I got mine from ebay) :) very cheap but very useful.
I like this! It's perfect! thank u for this work. Excellent Video! Greetings from Colombia! my BRO
thank you very much !! it's so great tutorial and my old speakers are like brand new :)
Thank you, nice tutorial and it's working without problem!
Yeah, just replace the USB bit with a 3x AA battery pack, and you should be good to go! :)
I excuse myself in advance for a noobish question but can it work just with 3.5mm jack or does it need the usb for the power ?
Great video :)))
You'd have to be a lot more specific than that :) do you mean passive 'bookshelf' speakers that work with most hi-fi players? thank, i dont get it at @01:49 because i'm people who doesnt know electrical XD, but i try my own experiment, and it works! thank again!
I'd like to help, but that link throws up an "internal server error" :\
totally not me replying to a comment made 8 years ago.
@@est495 yo , what's up
Yes, but only if your smartphone has the option to output power over its usb port. Many do, so it's worth looking into.
This does not turn them into USB speakers. They are USB POWERED speakers, but not USB speakers.
I did something like this last year only I added in the option to switch between a 9v battery and a USB connection. It does work with a 9v battery
is there any way to change those speakers into USB-C for example for my samsung s21+ ?
thank you! 😊
I did it and works simply great!
Thank you!!
great video.question if i wanted to make it blue tooth can this process be made or no?
will u make a video on how to make any speaker blue tooth with the amp as ur other video adding components like headphones, like the boom box u made but just with more stuff lol ur videos are awesome and i can understand everything in ur step by steps ..nice work
Thank's so much for this quick video. It´s very helpful.
I will look into it.
Great video. Very helpful. Works like a dream.
You should be able to, yes. The wiring will probably be slightly different than the MPS-70 speakers, though.
if you do this mod you can use one of those portable phone chargers (which are essentially batteries with a usb port) to use it with your phone/tablet/mp3player etc.. on the go
haha, i did this few years ago and they work awesome even now, really nice speakers for a laptop
s there some kind of connecting cable to buy so it can be attached to the original sony ericcson cable and just go to usb without cutting rewiring and everything else. so like usb A to usb B ?
Hello dude i just watch your video it really helpful wanna ask you something
Why does my speaker is not so loud this speaker came from the flatscreen tv speaker
pretty clever stuff :)
i have a question for you. i have a set of usb speakers for my pc if i put the volume up too loud (not very loud) theres whining and crackling interference when theyre not outputting sound? do you know why?
would be nice if you could do a few more techy diy projects that cover something like my prolem and other things too.
Sounds like there's some interference in your audio signal. You could try a different soundcard I guess, as they're not that expensive these days.
I had done this myself over 3 years ago - only difference being that I initially used a 9v battery. I eventually made a USB cable with a 9v battery connector on the end.
