Favorite song and music video of all times! Even kicks "my heart will go on" off the throne. Marcellas voice is not from this world and Siobhan gives this song the special extra. An alltime Hit! 💜
Iconic song and was number one 30 years ago in the UK. In fact it literally STAYed at the top for a staggering 8 weeks. This set a new record for the longest stay at the top for an all female assembly...and 30 years later it still holds the record. Great band, great song.
@@davidcarrol110 Yes I agree. I did hear that the low selling singles was responsible for the one of the fewest chart toppers in a year in 92. I think that Stay, despite being number one for 8 weeks was the fourth best selling song of 1992.
@@davidcarrol110 yeah I remember the Wedding Present hacking the system by putting out limited-release singles every month that year. Which made the chart whether they were good or not (they were not good)
A video where Death actually appears and the mortal literally wrestles with them for their loved one. On top of that it’s an incredible vocal. Doesn’t get better than that
I love how Siobhan gives a half smile towards Marcela when the guy comes out of his coma but then rolls her eyes not a second later like "okay you got this one..." Lol xxx
I am lucky enough to be see this the first time this came on The Top of The Pops - which I don't know why this discontinued it - anyways, and I to noticed that eye-roll. An yes- I am old as shit! LOL.
Michael Kaplan overrated "masterpiece". Seriously? That whiney high pitched grating nasalish voice and her mannish face? Death....dressed up in a glittery outfit? Come on, I stopped drinking the Kool-Aid when it came to this song....maybe you should try too?
When she rolls her eyes as if to say, “Oh just bloody have him then” 😂 The way she just walks off at the end, like "whatever" is always hilarious. This remains one of the most beautiful songs ever written!
The composition of this track is so original. You just don't see tracks made like this any more. So happy they decided to get back together and make amends.
I DEDICATE THIS SONG TO MY BROTHER TONI WHO DIED AT THE AGE OF 37 IT WAS ONE OF HIS FAVORITE SONGS ! I LOVE YOU FOREVER MY BROTHER ! ALWAYS YOUR SISTER ! 🕊🙏🕯🌹😭
I just love the arpeggiated section just before the last chorus. They did the with a guitar and a synth what some bands couldn't replicate with an entire orchestra in the years to follow. Always a classic
You are 1000% correct. Unforgivable that they were so overlooked in terms of talent, song arrangements and a style so unique at this point in music history..
Probably because Siobhan was in Bananarama and they were like a European version of The Bangles, they were huge over here and she was beloved because of that. Marcella was always going to be second fiddle to Siobhan, at least in much of Europe.
When my Dad was in hospital he was upset with tubes in his throat and I heard him say to Mum that he'd had enough, he'd had a lovely life with her, but he wanted to stop. The only time I heard Mum swear was when she told him "Don't you bloody dare". And the line here "But if you try to go on alone, don't think I'll understand" is that in song. They lived another 10 years and more together.
I was declared clinically dead twice before I turned 21. I decided after the 2nd time that drugs weren't my friends. This song reminds me that there must have been an angel holding my hand to bring me back. The OD's happened in the late 70's. I have been drug free since and thankfully so.
Bless both you and your friend. What would we do without these angels on earth? Have faith that your dark times will ease. I hope better times are on the way for you. Stay strong.

To be fair, they didn't usually make music like this back then either. That's why this was a massive hit. I generally agree that music was better back then though.
I love how death is depicted. Especially to anyone in pain- mental or physical, death can look beyond beautiful and shiny. Like a treasure. And that scream in song voice is perfection 💕
I was 18 when this song was released. Thirty years… wow. I forgot about this song long ago. Ten minutes ago it just randomly popped into my head like “hey remember me?” Still as powerful, beautiful and haunting as the first time I heard it. So glad I paid attention to the randomness and got on UA-cam.
Tears the first time I heard it 30 years ago, tears every damn time I hear it. Timeless masterpiece. I miss this mind-blowing show of artistry and talent in music.
This song accompanied me through some horrendous depression in the early 90s. There were 3 or 4 songs which were number 1 for months between 91 and 93 and whenever i hear them , it reminds me of the soundtrack of my misery; a terrible time when I could only see one way out. But then i stop - and see how far i have come...i have a lovely wife and son and a decent salary and a nice place to live. I have been all over the world and experience both pain and joy. And i am at times , profoundly happy.
Only just watched this video through fully for the first time this week. Siobhan’s representation of the Angel of Death is exquisite. So many times the angel is portrayed as this calm and somber character that creeps in gently when in reality the angel of death knows EXACTLY what they’re doing… Siobhan’s performance captures that… Unapologetic, intentional, tenacious and lip-licking hungry for that kiss of death.
Ha! This happened to me too! I was staying at a buddy's house in high school and sleeping on the couch. Fell asleep with the TV on MTV. Woke up to it disoriented and was nearly terrified.
When I was 16 in the mental hospital, there was this girl who lived down the hall who would sing this song at night. The whole wing could hear her. Helped me sleep soundly.
Never heard this song before until Ghost's cover, and I have to say both verisons are equally beautiful. This one sounds beautiful while Ghost's cover sounds more melancholic.
Thoroughly beguiling. The singing is sublime, but Siobhan is utterly magic, with incredible nuance and inflection in her demeanour and the staccato cutting of her movements is perfect. To get the best from this treasure, you have to watch the video performance, not just listen. I was spellbound then and am now. Joyous and a celebration of musical art par excellence.
Totally agree! Great isn’t it. I think it’s meant to give the connotation of ticking time. That coupled with the song itself being from ‘92 is probably part of the reason this part resonates with many.
I like that. Maybe the relaxing is the temptation to give up and the intensity is the knowledge that he must fight to wake one day in his own world? Sorry if I've over-analyzed it!
James Raymond It’s when a song or melody changes so quickly and is so completely unexpected during the play of it. Lots of musicians try it but few get it like this band did
Some songs are somehow immortal and never age. It's so good to see it attracting to new people so many years after the release of the the CD... That I still have and listen. ;)
Liebe ❤. Den der Todesengel holt alle Seelen ein.
I love how open to interpretation this video is. The second woman could be anything from an ex-girlfriend to death itself. I also adore how her voice “rolls” when she sings “only time will tell…” 😍
@@UA-camSCAMEXPOSERS glad this is confirmed. I was looking at her face unable to tell if she was trying to be demonic or genuinely didn't know what she was doing
One of the most brilliant lyrics about possessive love ever written or sang. While Marcella's part is kindness like and cheats us about her feelings after the break up, Siobhan explodes into the very core of jealousy and anger. Immortal gem!
That is how I always interpreted the song. The thin line between love and obsession. Even Marcella's part skirts really close with her demanding he only think of her, stay with her, never leave her etc.
For me, the lyric wholly subverts what appears to be happening on the surface. Marcella presents herself as a saviour, a lover, a friend. Siobhan appears to be sinister darkness. But in fact, Marcella wants her love to give up every scrap of autonomy and selfhood, and is exploiting their vulnerability and helplessness. It is the scary Siobhan who offers the chance to discover your real self....
36 years on and it still destroys me. Losing the only one who loved you with all your faults. Time does not heal. You miss them more every day. Wonderful song. xxx

My22 year old only son got stabbed in the middle of his brain two times at Boston Pizza in Prince Albert Saskatchewan. I got the call from the hospital and rush to be by his side. I fell to the ground and sang him this song everyday till he finally woke up out of the coma. The surgeons who performed 3 surgeries told he there is no explanation how he survived. I knew it was my love and prayers from many who love him. Today he is totally fine. ❤
Rediscovered this, amazing how memory pops into place sometimes. The vocals dig into my heart, and the video gave me chills anew 30 years later. The expression of the Other when he wakes, the pleased-in-spite-of-myself followed by the eye roll conveys everything.

Binge watching when music meant something!
When death enters and the song/video take a very dark turn, it's so haunting and beautiful.
🙏✌️🇦🇺
Haunting and addicting. So beautiful.
Im scared of this song as first, whenever it plays on MTV90 but true its addicting
If by "beautiful" you mean "scary af" then yes, I agree 😱😅
Favorite song and music video of all times! Even kicks "my heart will go on" off the throne. Marcellas voice is not from this world and Siobhan gives this song the special extra. An alltime Hit! 💜
Iconic song and was number one 30 years ago in the UK. In fact it literally STAYed at the top for a staggering 8 weeks. This set a new record for the longest stay at the top for an all female assembly...and 30 years later it still holds the record. Great band, great song.
It was quality over quantity in 1992 as most singles were low selling. This, however, is still an exceptional gothic ballad 30 years on.

Doesn’t get better than that
@James Kirby What I would call a frightening beauty.

Can't believe it's been that long! I remember watching this video on Top of the Pops when it came out.

I am lucky enough to be see this the first time this came on The Top of The Pops - which I don't know why this discontinued it - anyways, and I to noticed that eye-roll. An yes- I am old as shit! LOL.
Underrated masterpiece.
I really don't think it's underrated, it spent eight weeks at number one in the UK, the longest run by any girl group.
In the us it is.
Michael Kaplan overrated "masterpiece". Seriously? That whiney high pitched grating nasalish voice and her mannish face? Death....dressed up in a glittery outfit? Come on, I stopped drinking the Kool-Aid when it came to this song....maybe you should try too?
@@Zinwaq I think he's confusing it with I can drive or it's a trip,or the likes 😂
brilliant xx
I am here in 2024 .. i don't think Shakespear Sister realised how great they were ........ best days for proper and classic music...legends 🙌🙌
They did. But apparently they couldn’t stand each other
This song really did "Stay With Me" all these decades later. It looks like I'm not the only one. I hope she knows.
This is reality not delusion
When songs had more then 2 repeating lines...good times
And most others didn't realise it, but then the masses can't do anything right, that's why they're the masses!
I was deeply touched by this back in the day because of personal loss. Still love the music and the classic video.
Siobhan Fahey's entrance still gives me goosebumps
She drank a bottle of vodka in the 12 hours before she was filmed! Shit faced!
Imo she makes the video. Her facial expressions are priceless.
The fact she was actually drunk at The time too, Shows what great acting it can be in the end!!
Okay cool you know her name do you want a sticker or something
Yeah , totally knockout! Surely a prime reason it was a hit!
One of the most emotional songs of 90s. A pure classic that will never be forgotton.
It's better than the other "Stay" song that was more popular than this one at that time.
The lisa loeb song? That was released about two years after this song though.
No, this song was the most emotional. ua-cam.com/video/pdwNlvCj87U/v-deo.html
When she rolls her eyes as if to say, “Oh just bloody have him then” 😂
The way she just walks off at the end, like "whatever" is always hilarious.
This remains one of the most beautiful songs ever written!
The composition of this track is so original. You just don't see tracks made like this any more. So happy they decided to get back together and make amends.

I just love the arpeggiated section just before the last chorus. They did the with a guitar and a synth what some bands couldn't replicate with an entire orchestra in the years to follow. Always a classic
Finally the kids are waking up to this masterpiece. To me: best song AND video ever!
Siobhan's glam/German expressionist performance is outstanding.
Timeless classic. They pull it off brilliantly. Massively underrated group.
You are 1000% correct. Unforgivable that they were so overlooked in terms of talent, song arrangements and a style so unique at this point in music history..
Its as great as annie lennox's song Why omg just perfect
I never get why Marcella doesn't get more credit. I've seen fans talk like she's just a backup singer, this song is magic because of her
Probably because Siobhan was in Bananarama and they were like a European version of The Bangles, they were huge over here and she was beloved because of that. Marcella was always going to be second fiddle to Siobhan, at least in much of Europe.
Personally, I love Marcy for what she wrote and sang together with Clapton.
I love her outfit.... it brings this song to another level
I love the song because of her bit!! 💕

"where there is love, death is powerless"...incredible, thanks so much for this ♡ xx
Great to see that you are progressing on your journey - you'll have bad days & good days, hopefully the good out-way the bad

I am just so happy for you.
She was drunk out of her head when she filmed this - and you can see
@@michaelleacy Yep she had been on the vodka. I don’t think we would’ve got such an awesome result if she’d been sober.

When I was 16 in the mental hospital, there was this girl who lived down the hall who would sing this song at night. The whole wing could hear her. Helped me sleep soundly.

I first heard this song in the adolescent mental hospital also!
Awesome story
"What a sweet sweet melod... oh, that got fucking loud quick! I love it!"
Honestly cannot get enough of that piano and beat at 2:39. It just feels so intense and relaxing at the same time 😌
Yeah that part of the song is genius. Simple but brilliant.
im going to learn how to play it on my keyboard because I really like it
Totally agree!
It is one of my earliest memories as a kid. It resonates as one of the first melodic sounds that I remember as a baby.
Still one of the best "shock" changes in a song ever...

Oooh What's a shock change??!! 😊😊
James Raymond It’s when a song or melody changes so quickly and is so completely unexpected during the play of it. Lots of musicians try it but few get it like this band did
Rob Taylor, you are absolutely right! It goes from angelical and serene to tense and almost scary.

So she had an alcohol problem??
Its her own pshychie, its her own bad thoughts & insecurities about being on her own & still being in love.
Even Marcella's part skirts really close with her demanding he only think of her, stay with her, never leave her etc.
seriously? Britney's sung way better.
I loved this song back when it released in the early 90's. I've always loved it, the vocals are phenomenal.
36 years on and it still destroys me. Losing the only one who loved you with all your faults. Time does not heal. You miss them more every day. Wonderful song. xxx
