I’ve got a black powder double .50 set I am doing my best to build a gun around, every once in a while I have to watch the videos to give me a bit more motivation to finish. Completed 1 lock this week, made from scratch. Really makes one appreciate these ready to go firearms.

I have one in .54 with the longer barrels and the two rear sights....I LOVE this rifle. I bought it to hunt big game in New England, U.S.A. Specifically Black Bear and whitetail deer. I look forward to the day I can use it to harvest game.

Fantastic review of a fantastic rifle. So good, in fact, that your review enticed me to purchase one of my own. My only difference is that I chose the .72 caliber (I have several American "Plains" style rifles in .54 already, some of which shoot round ball, some conical). My .72 caliber regulates nicely at 100 yards with a .715 round ball patched .015" and lubed with Wonder Lube, propelled by 120 grains of Swiss 1.5 Fg. I can't wait to take it hunting. So, I owe you a hearty "thank you" for your review, and leading me to a very pleasing rifle.

To answer your question, recoil is what I would call relatively "mild". It feels far less than my various .45-70's loaded with 400 grain cast bullets in the 1,900 fps range. Probably pretty close to Mr. Kisner's thoughts, in that it's much like .45-70 recoil, at least with original spec, "Springfield Trapdoor safe" loads. As far as conicals, the .72 caliber rifle has a 1:144" twist - very, very slow. I have not tried it (I don't have any molds for conicals in this size), but I strongly suspect it would not stabilize them. So, in the intervening five years since I commented, I've hunted with the rifle on a number of occasions. I've taken a large-ish black bear in Washington, and several hogs in California. The big round ball has proven to be very, very effective. Nothing has been shot at much over 30 yards or so, and it's certainly no long range rifle, but boy does it hit hard up close. Five years on, I'm happier than ever with it. And thanks again to our host for leading me to purchase one of these.
That's a good shooter. With a full load it will shoot higher, much closer to where your point of aim was. I really need one of those Kodiaks in my life!
Pedersoli should provide a suggested load with each gun. Surely they do a substantial amount of test firing while regulating the barrels, and so they should have a good idea of what the gun will do after it leaves the Pedersoli factory. These are neat guns and buyers should be buying the "package." BTW at 6:25, the barrels are crossing, a classic example of low velocity or low bullet weight. Increasing velocity or weight can straighten out the regulation. By the way, my 1880s-1890s British double rifles have 2" accuracy at 100 yards...

Sorry to correct you, but you didn't keyhole that target in the same round of fire. One bullet was from the first round of firing, one was from the second round. Your group expanded slightly, in fact. The two barrels did not keyhole during the same round of firing.

That was some excellent accuracy. The bullet is very close to the old Thompson Center maxi-ball. I shoot a T/C Hawken 54 caliber. My hunting load is 90 grains of FFG with a 430 grain maxi ball. That load will harvest anything in North America up to 150 yards. I have only taken Mule Deer and Black Bear. However that Kodiak double barrel would be a much better dangerous game rifle.
This is my most favorite muzzleloader I lost mine or the early model to a house fire but it was what I used to hunt deer with and found out what happens to a deer when you fire both barrel at the same time on a deer fantastic ,it's just a fantastic rifle.
Always enjoy ur videos-very informative and interesting. Always appreciate hearing from the "other side of the pond", where firearms ownership is much more restricted than here in the US. Black powder/cap-and-ball, as well as military surplus are both major interests of mine.
I had one of the older 58 caliber express guns... I did have many problems getting the gun to shoot both barrels in a group.. It printed a group from 1 barrel that was Acceptable. However, the next barrel printed a group 8" away from the other.. I sent it back to the company they said It was made that way and if they had to Regulate the barrels to each rifle, the cost Of producing them would drastically incres. My gun had to set of rear sites. One for each barrel...it still didnt shoot accurately enough.. I never kept the rifle.
May want to watch at 6:13 mark..... That was not the correct group. Second group 1st shot was left of first group and second shot of second group was touching right side hit on first group per my take.... Still good, just didn't see what presenter said....stay safe ! Would like to see a review of old long tang Thompson Center Hawken .54 caliber if ya ever have the time. Interested as to your opinion of the old style "long tang" TC Hawken in .54. Thanks...
Holy Pedersoli , Batman !! The barrel convergence seems to be pretty good ( understatement ) for the load you used . Is that a maxi-ball mold ? I normally use the Maxi-ball with the grooves fully greased , those look dry .
This video was fascinating. I had never even considered using a double bbl muzzleloader for hunting. I don't know how it is in Europe, but in the US, people who use muzzleloaders enjoy a longer hunting season than those who use cartridge firearms, and some places where the human population is quite close to the forest, hunting may be restricted to muzzleloaders and shotguns only. In Hungary, (I think that's where you said you are from) is obtaining and owning a bp firearm a lot less hassle than owning a cartridge weapon?
As a user of a muzzle loading rifle, in my case a Thompson Center .50 caliber Hawken, I know a thing or two about loading them. First off it would have been nice to know what load you where using, powder wise and bullet wise. I think you shot low because you where not using enough powder. I use 80g 2f blackpowder a over powder wad then a Thompson Center Maxi Hunter bullet. I'm dead on at 50 yards. Okay, you said you only used 62 grains, yep a light load for a heavy bullet. Bump that load up to 75 grains and I but you will be right on target.
I tried to find a Pedersoli Hawken in .45 caliber but they’re all sold out. All they have is the .54 caliber and another one that’s huge- .69 caliber 😮. That’s just way too big for me.
It appears to me the two bullet holes ( 2 in 1 ) where both shot with the left barrel. With that in mind I need to ask you a question. Since the left barrel is striking the target in the same hole at 50 meters, would it be possible for the gun maker to adjust BOTH barrels to strike the target in the same hole? Perhaps one at 100 yards and the other at 50 yards if a dangerous animal is closing on your position. Great video as usual. Thanks from Texas
HI, it is possible to fine tune the barrels to a specific load, but it is also possible to play with the load to find the crossing point of the two barrels at a specific distance. We just took a rifle to the range and shot it out of box for testing.
The classic timing for a double barrel rifle is identical impact at 100 yards. This gives an effective range of 200 yards for any properly timed double. Personally, I disagree with that concept. I think that both barrels should shoot a true parallel. With parallel timing, range is irrelevant. Having said that much, Cap and Ball is completely correct. You have to find the particular load that your individual rifle "likes". And that can concievably be a few grains different for each barrel, and shooting should be paired, because heating up one barrel while allowing the second to remain cool is simply asking for trouble.
Excellent point on care of loading barrels in a consistent pattern. I would have not really given it any thought. Are you shooting at Pedersoli? Noticed a Komz ZRT spotter on the shelf....
Do you know the CUP pressure rating for the .54 cal Kodiak Express MK IV? I need a rifle that could save my scrawny ass from a Brown Bear (Grizzly) when I go to Yellowstone park. I'm not setting out to go hunting a bear, just making sure I don't get hunted. None of my rifles are especially good for that. They are too heavy to carry all day, and center-fire cartridge double rifles are too expensive. Maybe I should just get a 10 ga shotgun, cut the barrels down to 20 inches and load it up with rifled slugs. I have a .454 Casull revolver, but I don't know that it would take down a Griz. Black bear, it'll turn inside out, but old Griz is more than twice the size of old Blacky.
+TheGunrunn3r i wish they still made guns in 8mm mauser but except for a few old war relics worth a small fortune you wont find any semi auto 8mm mauser's. A good big bore revolver or a 12 gauge pump or semi auto shotgun would serve you well for bear protection.
+glockfan112 The Egyptian Hakim (based on the Swedish AG42 Ljungman) rifle is a 10-round 8mm semi, and could be had for $500-$600. I have an Israeli FALO (The Hebrew Hammer) in 7.62X51 (.308 Win) but it weighs over 13 lbs empty. Not exactly designed for leisure backpacking.

4570duplex what's the recoil compatible to with a 72? Could thid gun handle a conical?
I thinking that recoil would be the same as a 45 70 rifle recoil

I have a 58 double , great rifle . The rear sight on that 54 looks like a real improvement over the two rear blade system on my 58 .

My old school .54 cal.Hawkins rifle has a brass but plate . I shoot the maxi ball bullets at 492 grains .

Double rifles were made for hunting dangerous and big game, because you could potentially be killed without a quick follow up shot!

Looks like the paths of the projectiles cross at about 20 yards.
They need to make a break action version of this. where you can put rubber cartridges filled with black powder like you would a Smith carbine.
Look up the Nitro Express or elephant gun. It's already a thing.

Why would you beat and deform the nose of the bullet while loading. Just push it down to meet the powder.
Is there any historical background with this style of rifle? If so what years were they first produced?
Not sure but I used one in the late 70's. 58x58.
I have a 10 gauge muzzleloader shotgun it has the same stock it's just a shot gun if you have any information about theses rifles I would love to know
