I was taught Gregorian Chant by professionals - the Benedictines. I now assist with training the novices entering into vocation.

Hello Mark. How can I know what mode to use for the Liturgy of hours?

Psalms can be categorised as trust psalms, hymn psalms, royal psalms, wisdom and didactic psalms, lament and petition psalms, or praise and thanksgiving psalms. Go here: www.psalmsandaffirmations.com/psalms-categories.html for one way of categories each. There are psalm tones appropriate to each of these types. For example Howard Hughes, SM, has compiled a set of tones accordingly which you'll find on our website. www.dominicanlaity.ca/DominicanLaity/MorningPrayer.html. Further down on this page I've picked appropriate tones for all the psalms for Saturday Morning Prayer weeks 1-4 in Ordinary Time. I hope this is helpful in pointing you in the right direction.
