I am going to get a K&K pure mini for my 1995 Taylor Grand concert with Solid spruce top, Solid birds eye maple back and sides. You have sold me on those JP. I also bought a Yamaha LS16M when I saw you playing one. You have made me enjoy playing guitar more now that I am retired and moved to Bouctouche NB from Ontario 2 years ago. Thank you so much JP!
Synchronicity here .. a guitarist on MeWe music group posted a vid here. After 3 minuets you popped on ..omg a message for me to do my acoustic gigs alone agin! and start practicing again ...Forget trying to get jazz musicians to accompany my singing only . I’m going back to my roots..So grateful I saw this. You are a blessing🙏🎸✨
I love the segments of the J.P. Gnome scuttling down the road with a guitar case! Can’t believe Elixir or some other string company doesn’t sponsor you... Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Guys. I agree ... that the immediacy of "attack" on those under the saddle piezo pu's is unnatural. If you are sitting across the kitchen table with an acoustic guitar ..... there is a few milliseconds of delay after you strike the strings ... and the airwaves meet the ear of the listener. I have another K+K to install tomorrow in a '74 D-18 ... it had an LR Baggs in it ... that we took out. Cheers ! MMcC
Excellent video, I've long believed the K&K Pure Mini is the best pickup out there. The trick is finding a guitar without any electronics in the middle of the market, which I'd say is less than US $1000 or indeed here in the UK for less than £1000. If I see a guitar with a 'barn door' pre-amp, I run a mile. Happily, Recording King offer quite a few, especially as I'm after a smaller blues style box! Man, you live in a beautiful location.
Everybody needs a friend like Mr Chris. And two small breed pups to love you unconditionally and be cute at any given hour. My Boston Terrier, Timmy, is immediately loved by everyone who meets him. Unfortunately, he is in his senior years, his eyesight is going, has a bad back, and he does not immediately love everyone he meets. His cuteness is not consent to pet or approach, folks!
Lol watching JP pop the bridge pins out at full tension is how I know we're brothers. I don't do that to mine but I absolutely love him for it!!! As Denzel would say... MAH MANNN!!!!!
Brilliant! Now that I’ve watched this version and the version on your membership page with the bonus footage I now know why it’s worth the membership price Lololol. Both are great but thank you for the extra banter Lololol.
You sold me! K+K it is. I've installed many Fishman Matrix Infinities in my own acoustic builds with satisfactory results. This pickup sounds AWESOME. That guitar is amazing - even if it is blue!!! Thanks for the great video .
I like the simplicity of the k and k ,no battery packs and excess junk in the guitar, but then again i love the sound of the old lr baggs i beam. Thanks for turning me on to the astin origins microphone.
Really enjoyed this video! I put a Lyric in my SG-52, but I’m gonna go to a K&K if I ever get back to plugging in. I’ve been homesick of late, your videos are good food for the soul.
I have a plastic bridge pin puller that fits over the nut that tightens the end pin jack down . Lock tight super glue gell is a clean drip free glue for permanent installation of the pick up. If you run a tenor e guitar string in the jack hole from the out side lower bout and run it through the hole at the top of the pick up jack ,and twist it,it will pull up flush through the freshly drilled hole. It pays to vaccum everything clean on the inside of the instrument before the glue in.
This was the most enjoyable presentation I have seen on UA-cam in a long...long... time. I play classical (nylon) for the most part, but I do have an old 96 Seagull S6 that I just might try amp-ing.... again fun vid to watch while sipping on a nice relaxing bourbon..!
They have done the tests. The K&K reduces the low end for less feedback. So it's only weakness is in the low end. The K&K has the best texture for finger and flat picking. I am mostly a strummer, with a tiny bit of picking. K&K does not have enough bottom end for strumming in my experience when you want it. Like in singer/songwriter realms. The full "Anthem" with the mic does have full bottom end (getting some low end from the piezo even when fully faded to mic), and the second best texture on individual notes. The mic is also more natural sounding overall for strumming. And the full "Anthem" is only good for low to medium volume gigs. Tends to feedback at the very high volume gigs. Took me 15 years to see all of this. Just trying to help the strummers out there . . . because it is too late after you have installed it .:)
JP…thanks for the K&K mini instal video with Mr Coote Putting a set in my Hagstrom H-22 a1965 acoustic to be used for Blues and Slide! Can’t wait to hear it! Bravo!
Installed my first K&K pure mini in a Eastman OM yesterday. I have some pointers. First make sure you have a light inside the guitar to see the end pin openings. Have some plain nail polish remover or acetone to clean the surfaces or remove glue if the pickup does not stick and you need to redo it. Hold the pickup for the whole 5 minute time it`s kinda hard? and don`t reuse the same putty tack it will flatten and cause the piezo not to bond correctly. The golf tee thing is a mess it falls out no matter how hard you press into the template so be aware. If you have broad large hands have someone else do it.
My ovation has no bridge pins so I glued 2mics under sound hole to the bowl, third mic under sound hole under low e close to opening, sounds balanced and it works
Another great video JP. I will be installing the Journey Instruments K&K clone in an Abanez AC340 this week and was looking for pointers. Best inside joke was "Doug Sampson, Doug Sampson, all I evers hear is "Doug Sampson". btw, the AC340 really impresses me for the $$$.
Hey JP. Traded an electric guitar for an Alvarez acoustic a couple of years ago. Shortly thereafter started having trouble with the B- Band preamp. Recently it stopped working altogether. Was going to put a Fishman in it but after talking to my guitar tech, and watching videos by you and The guitar hunter Jeremy I am going to go with the K&K pickup. Will let you know how it turns out. You guys are hilarious. Take care, stay safe!
Shouldn't the wires from the pickup be running the other direction, towards the jack hole? LRBaggs instructs to run them that way... Just curious as I'm switching to the K&K. Thanks
Just when I was searching for this K&K pickup to go with a tonedexter. You post this video where you are saying it's your favorite pickup. You read minds J.P.
Thanks guys for the entertainment and the education....I'll be putting a K&K Pure Mini in my OM...big 👍 to the cameraperson for a great job..and putting up with the dialogue 😅
who new a year later and I would be re-watching this because I have just ordered a K&K BECAUSE the Sonitone in my new H-Bird has a battery inside that requires the strings to be loosened to get your hand in the sound hole to replace the 9v battery. My question is: can I leave in-place the piezo when I install the K&K?? (like just disconnect the piezo wiring) so as not to worry about destroying any wood where double-sided tape holds things like the preamp or the battery pouch etc etc ??
I want a passive that sounds good and this made up my mind. I’m tired of changing batteries and sometimes on stage I realize I forgot to change and that’s embarrassing. Thanks for your videos! Yamaha fan here now I’m gonna try K and K
I’ve been using K&k for over 10 years but I go for the added mic option in 4 of my guitars. Mixing the mic in with the sensors if used very sparingly provides the slightly treble bite that’s missing with the just the sensors alone. Feedback can be a problem if it’s overdone.
My Martin was hard ro play again after 30 yrs ...even light strings ,though too high a bridge. ; but my fingers still dent after a few hours!! . Do you suggest some kind of / electric/acoustic combo with . Also that d35 was always so big for me . So appreciated your talents... wow feel like playing again. Thank you 🙏 💕
If the neck is straight, you should be able to bring the action down to spec, by shaving the bridge or having a luthier do it. I had a similar problem on a 30 y/o Martin and it required a neck reset, however.
thanks . . . i'm sold on those pickups . . . pretty easy if one is handy with tools . . . also lol at the ribbing you guys gave each other. Cute doggy action 2. I found on amazon you have to order from the brands / manufacturer's official amazon store front (if they don't have one order off of amazon directly from them), otherwise chances of getting a fake / copy item. that's the problem with amazon, once they opened it up so individuals could sell on their main site a lot of knock offs and counterfeit / imitation junk products faking real brand items showed up . . .
Wow just saw the Yamaha Trinity video.... I’ve been singing and playing guitar 40 years, but never mastered real picking or lead. I’m basically a singer w good rhythm ! I have a Martin D 35 which the guitarist in my first Trio group ,, told me to buy.. aD35 @ a banjo instructors studio in NYC, Roger Sprung who only picked 3 or four of the best ones .. i picked out of only two, the one that had deepest ring tone..I knew nothing! After 47 years the tone is still there ... but cracks , Maple Trim half off etc. Do you suggest sending to Martin? ..in Pennsylvania? or find a local Luthier here in north miami Fl. Thank you ...feel like playing again 🙏❤️🙏🎸🎯
Great Stuff J P .. Great sounding pickup the KK , and I’ve known someone who came across some FAKE Elixirs, If there to good to be true in price on line you know, there usually fake .. Great Work and Playing Sir 🌞⭐️🌞⭐️👍🏻⭐️
You know what, you can build same style and quality pick up for around $20! Simple circuit but most important parts are those small disc type piezo sensors, three of them which are connected in parallel to the input socket, high quality 12mm dia discs with high frequency range typically around just over 10 Khz resonance frequency are the ones they use, don't use cheap larger dia Chinese ones as they have low resonance frequency around 3 Khz. which is ok for percussions but not for guitar.. Peace. ✌ 🙂
Hi JP! Thanks for your video! Just installed the k&k in my seagull s6. I have a loudbox mini. I was wondering if you use a pre-amp? It sounds great to me just line that but am I missing something? Thanks! Felix from Quebec!

You two boys should take this act on the road.......Well done gents!
Magic! Did you see Mr Chris’ hand pass right through the back of the very blue guitar? Check it out at 13:22
The sound of the k & K is outstanding ❤ well done guys 👏🏽👏🏽
I built a dreadnaught. Thanks for helping me choose the pickup.
This is the best instruction video I've ever seen, both for information and for entertainment. Painless education.😀

When he arrived back at your place, with that mini bike putting on the brakes in that gravel really made me laugh. Keep it up you two. 👍👍👍😀

I came here to learn how to install the K&K mini. I still don't know how to install it, but I had fun watching your video.
That guitar is frigging amazing! Highs and lows are perfect! I will be getting a couple of K&K's. What a great team you two are!

Nope
