I had a mulberry tree and the power or cable company cut it down to put in a power pole near it. Knowing what I know now I should have sued them because they didn't even ask. I was eating and collecting mulberries for friends and relatives for 20 years. It really hurt to wake up to see them chopping it up & going threw the wood chipper. Sorry, when you said mulberry tree it reminded me of that.
I just found a small stand of them. I will not reveal it's location, I have been looking for a bowmaking tree for 2 years. Cut a really nice straight grained 5'6" 6" diameter just today.
We call the wood Hedge here in Kansas . They wood burns very very hot. I burn it all the time. They are almost a Nucance in pastures because they spread very fast. They are used as wind breaks on section lines and such. I have one 70 feet tall and very large base.
We had lots of them in northwest Missouri where I grew up. My brother and I liked to line them up across the dirt road at the end of our driveway and watch them get run over whenever a car would pass. Haha The things you do on a farm for entertainment. 😄
We have them in Cincinnati Ohio area. I colect them from a condo place and just set one on some Foil and put them under chairs and in closets. They make your house smell good and I THKIN they keep the spiders and ants out of my house. Toss them out in like April.
Jerome Molloy my mother always put them in brown paper bags around her house. I am gonna put some around my house and see if they'll work for spiders , I've sprayed and that doesn't seem to work for spiders or crickets.
Animals eat em like crazy; possums, raccoons, certain birds, cattle. That "bois d'arc" name of em came from Europeans selling em for profit and trade and it just stuck, but these are known as either Osage oranges.......or horse apples...and horse apple is the more common and older moniker for them, due to how much horses love them
PICKED THESE APPLES by accident was going to plant them but looked online to find out what it was and amaze to find the benefits of it. is it ok to pick them or better to pick them off the floor
We had one in my yard growing up. Next to the house. There weren't many spiders on that side of the house. Seemed to be true. We called them brains. The brain tree. Filled with a white sappy nastiness. I would never consider eating one.
up here in denton they are everywhere, been doing some wood working, so im looking for fallen ones to build with, picked up some fruits recently i was wondering if they were good for anything
How would you prepare the fruit for cancer? I've looked for information, but haven't found any info. Thank you for the informational video! @@jamessstoday6281
I live outside of the Austin area and we have 2 Osage trees on our homestead. As Louisiana Creole @03:29 your not 100% correct Bois d Arc means wood -arrow in French. I think it really suppose to be arch of wood. I think the name is a mangle of Indian and French words but who knows. Either way a good video and explanation.
They are my favorite tree love them and fascinated by them ,I was born and raised in East Texas played with these as a kid in the 60s and 70s looking forward for more info
i grew up in East Texas and i have always called them horse apples. Every bois d'arc tree doesn't have them. I have about 4 in my yard. Two of which are at least 150 years old. Neither of them had these horse apples or osage oranges but one of my trees drops about 300 lbs of these things every year. If you don't throw them away, they rot where they are and will really mess up your driveway or yard. I once had one of these trees in my backyard at another house and had a horse back there and that horse loved them....so i don't know where you get your info that animals dont like them. They are stinky and sticky and i wouldn't eat one at all. also they are heavy. They weigh probably one lb or more. if you are standing under the tree, be careful.
Thank you for the nice comments everyone! There will always be those who will write negative abusive comments.I try hard to be nice to them and use an non-offensive strong word back to them.Meekness is strength under control. They may only be having a bad day. They may just need encouragement because they are new to UA-cam and it makes them sad because they do not have many views yet. Be patient. It takes time to figure out UA-cam.Sometimes someone just needs one encouraging comment in life.Make your day Great!
Hello Sandy, Most grow naturally from about Dallas Texas to Austin Texas. But during the Dust Bowl of I think the 1930's the trees (or actually the seeds) were planted many places east of the Rocky Mountains to help block the wind. Hope this helps. James
If you want to keep all bugs snakes and rodents away from your house all you have to do is sprinkle moth balls around your house nothing will come near it
I've seen cows eating them too. Supposedly if they get ahold of a whole one that's not been broken up into chunks (thanks, Squirrels!), the cows or horses can choke to death, but the death is from choking, not from the osage orange.

Thanks for all the information.
I was told by old farmers that they have been used to keep pigs inside an enclosure. The trees have major root systems that really go down deep.
Growing up In Commerce Texas, we called those Bois D’arc apples
I just found a small stand of them. I will not reveal it's location, I have been looking for a bowmaking tree for 2 years. Cut a really nice straight grained 5'6" 6" diameter just today.
Thank you James
