The Raw Milk Renaissance: A Farmer's Advocacy for Natural Dairy

  • A farmer elaborates on the benefits of raw milk, emphasizing its nutritional advantages over processed alternatives and debunking common misconceptions about safety. He highlights the historical context of milk pasteurization and argues for informed consumer choices, advocating for raw milk as a viable, healthful option when produced under proper, safe conditions.
    Mike Guebert, a local small scale integrated livestock farmer who sells raw milk from his farm direct to the public shares his perspective on the safety and benefits of raw unpasteurized milk. According to data from the Center For Disease Control, there are an estimated 9 million people in the U.S. who consume raw milk. To gain a sense of how polarized an issue raw milk is in this country, the following quotes, and information below paint two very different realities.
    www.cdc.gov/foo..." -U.S. Center For Disease Control:
    "Raw milk can carry harmful bacteria and other germs that can make you very sick or kill you. While it is possible to get foodborne illnesses from many different foods, raw milk is one of the riskiest of all."

    "FORTY-YEAR-OLD SCIENCE AND ANCIENT HISTORY: Claims that raw milk is unsafe are based on 40-year-old science and century-old experiences from distillery dairy "factory farms" in rapidly urbanizing nineteenth century America. "

      Henri Devigne I personally worked on a dairy for a year and a half and I saw four cows (that I can remember maybe more) who went down with E. coli... It was torture to watch those cows with 104 degree fevers for weeks, they'd produce less than a gallon a day and they'd have to be sold. All of this because of the way the system works. The cows could not eat grass and only had a small area to go outside. Even that area was nothing but a field of dried manure. If all of the cows in the barn were let out into that area you could hardly see the ground! Anything around the electric fence that was green got eaten by the cows, which, of course, was not very much.

    The fact that raw milk is ''illegal'' (Canada) is ridiculous. It should be consumers choice, like fat burgers and candy. It should be up to me to decide what I can purchase and where. I for one, would LOVE to get my hands on raw milk ( the only one that doesn't make me sick), but whenever I approached a dairy farmer, I would get refused. Even small farmers are too scared to sell privately, in case they get shut down. It's an awful situation, it really is.

      Hello B Charron, it is because by aging of cheese a potentially dangerous bacterias will die. I am a small farmer from Czech Republic. We produce cheese from goat milk and I thank God that it is legal to sell raw milk here. But still with a lot of limits. You can´t find raw milk in the store, but you can buy it only directly at farm. We don´t sell pasterized milk, only raw.

    • @charronfamilyconnect
      @charronfamilyconnect 9 років тому +2

      Pavel Nýdrle Thanks for your reply! I didn't know that aging cheese would make all the difference? These dangerous bacteria are simply the result of feeding the cows a rich diet of grains which is very acidic, and provides the idea environment in the cows gutt for dangerous strains of bacteria to thrive. Also I believe the cows don't get enough excercise, and are too cramped in next to other cows in doors with poor ventiliation, and this may be the cause of dangerous strains of bacteria. I am curious what you feed your cows in the Czech republic, and what you do differently to reduce the chances of these bacteria from forming? I heard a diet in mostly grass is idea.

    • @Antonienydrlova
      @Antonienydrlova 9 років тому +9

      B Charron I am sorry for a wrong information. Aging of cheese will NOT kill potential bacterias. But if the cheese is older then 2 months, it is for sure bacteria free. Because if the milk would be infected, it would be visible on cheese during aging. So this is the reason, why you can buy some hard cheeses (aged more then 2 months) from unpasterised milk even in Canada or US. You are right, it is mostly a problem of diet and environment. We have only goats and they are most of the time on green grass. At night and during winter time they also have hay and crushed oats and barley. We don´t feed them with silage (fermented grass). That´s what we do to reduce bacterias. I drink raw milk everyday, our kids (1 and 3 years old) eat fresh cheese from raw milk...

The pasteurization process kills more than just harmful bacteria, it destroys the the little remaining nutrients it has as well as probiotic organisms that aid in digestion and other bodily functions. Also, notice how healthy the farmer looks for his age. Most American men that age look far more unhealthy.

    Thank you Mike for raising happy cows on grass and making traditional milk the old fashioned way. About 3 years ago, I was visiting a friend in Jackson Hole. She asked me to come with her to Boise to visit her family. We were about an hour outside of Boise and all of a sudden the most disgusting, chemical mixed with I don't know what smell I have ever had the misfortune to smell came in the windows. I gagged. My friend seemed not so affected because she did the journey fairly often. 20 seconds later I saw where the smell came from.. a "dairy farm". the cows were lined up in mud facing the side of the road, their heads held in steel/aluminum structures which made it impossible for them to even move their heads side to side, let alone their bodies. The smell came from this "dairy farm". It was not poop smell. It was chemical mixed with poop. I believe it was the cows poop because of the dreadful chemical grains and hormones they are fed. I would not want to drink milk from that place. I asked my friend who is in her late 30s, ... did it smell like that when you were a little girl.. you know, 20 years ago? She said no way. It didn't smell great, but it didn't smell as it does now. Don't drink store bought milk, find a local farmer like Mike! The milk tastes delicious and it's SO good for you! That's what our great great grandparents drank.

However this is just a bigger problem as now because it's no longer considered a food product there is no safety standards at all meaning other things could be added, it could be out of date, improperly kept cold while transported ect ect and just leads to more potential illness.

I just made my own yogurt the other day for the first time. No added sugar, fresh and creamy, very healthy and tasty.

I started giving my dog a bowl of just regular homogenised, full cream milk from the supermarket, and it put on weight really quickly from 16 to 20kg. I stopped giving it the milk and it lost the weight. Interestingly I had heaps of raw organic milk in the spring when it was cheap, so I gave it to my dog, and it didn't put on any weight at all. I wasn't being cruel to my dog, she eats a bit of our food anyways. I definitely think processed milk causes weight gain, as in obesity. Raw organic milk does not seem to cause obesity. Raw milk should be completely legal. It should come with a warning sticker with a warning about its consumption, and should be separated from other milk in stores. It's really weird and unthinkable that in a country that claims to be "free" it is banned.
    And warning stickers should not be like California warning stickers which have lost all meaning. Warning stickers should carry a warning level with numbers 1-5. 5 for the highest warning and 1 for the lowest. It is time to give power back to where it belongs- the American people.

The farmers in New York State operate with integrity and their pasture is visibly healthy with grass fed animals.

    I live in Georgia. It's illegal here, but just over the border to my home state, South Carolina, it is relatively easy to attain some.
    To the people who are super opposed, I wonder what they think we did before the routine pasteurization? It wasn't until the 1860's when it was even thought about to be done to milk (rather than just beer and wine). And even then it wasn't something done a lot.
    As long as you can get it fresh, and you know cows are relatively clean, there shouldn't be anything to worry about, I would think.

    • @killvolume
      @killvolume 10 років тому +6

      What did people do before pasteurization? A lot of them died. Between 1912 and 1937, at least 65,000 people in England died due to drinking mishandled raw milk. That's 2,500 deaths a year, or (controlling for population) about twice the amount of deaths due to car crashes in England today. Pathogens found in raw milk can cause tuberculosis, listeriosis, and salmonellosis. Despite what is said by the gentleman in the video, there is NO nutritional difference between raw milk and pasteurized milk. It has to same amount of amino acids and protein (the protein is denatured in the pasteurization process, but it is denatured in your stomach as well so this doesn't make a difference). There are indeed less enzymes, but enzymes aren't a nutrient. Unless you're lactose intolerant, you already have the enzymes needed to break down milk. If you are lactose intolerant, the enzymes in raw milk are unlikely to make a difference (though studies about this have been unclear). All of this information can be found on wikipedia.
      If you STILL want to drink raw milk - many prefer it for the taste - go to a local farmer and familiarize yourself with their bottling process. If you are comfortable with the cleanliness of their equipment and processes, the risk is relatively low. But it should be obvious why you can't buy this stuff in stores.

    • @medadvantage1
      @medadvantage1 8 років тому +2

      +Pierrette S It's more expensive because the cows need a pasture and hay to be grass fed ALSO where I get my milk the cows are NOT HOLSTEINS, they are Guernsey & Jersey which is A2 protein (not A1) A1 cows milk produces histamines in the human body which can cause neurological symptoms for ADHD & crohns disease. My son has ADHD & I had to take him off of milk 2 years ago because of the A1 protein, but probiotics & dietary enzymes were not able to replace something that was missing in his diet. I tried yogurt but that was A1 protein too, & gave him a spaced out hyper reaction. I started driving to get him this raw A2 Guernsey milk and I am shocked by the change. It must be a stomach enzyme that he has been missing for a very long time because his ADHD seems to be going away.

      Pierrette S Yes, I too drive a distance to buy raw milk, because it's an excellent nutritious whole food full of enzymes, healthy fat, vitamins A & D and who knows what all else! A gallon keeps for 2 weeks in the fridge!
      Actually I was opposed to milk consumption because I found it gross; but wanted raw butter to get the nutritious "factor X" Dr Royal Lee described, so I bought a gallon of raw milk to try and make my own butter.
      One day, I decided to use some of the raw milk in my protein shake in place of water. Wow! The milk shake gave my body an instant surge of energy I had never experienced. I am sold on raw milk. Pasteurized milk is disgusting, even just a splash in coffee tastes gross now. Add raw, unfiltered honey from a traditional beekeeper (no flow frames and no store bought!) to that raw milk and you'll be in "the land of milk and honey" folks.

    When I was in high school, my dad had a milk cow. We sold or gave away milk, and made butter out of the cream. People have no clue as to what they are missing. And don't understand the full control the government has over every aspect of our daily lives. Right now I buy fresh eggs from a friend who has a few hens right here in town! They are the best!
