Engerlish dude you wouldn't believe how many karaoke places there are in Tokyo. I knew it was big before I went but you don't really understand until you see it.
Leo Cheung Yeah I think most people here are too embarrassed to sing in front of others unless they get drunk first, so you only really find karaoke machines in pubs and they're usually old fashioned and covered in dust from how rarely they're used :P
Same as here where I live in Brazil, some pubs(not pubs in the same way as UK, the ones I see/go are like awesome shitholes) they have one machine which plays a amount of limited musics but if you want so you can sing too, and generally people in those places are insanely drunk when they risk pick the micro. Or people do this in private parties. At least where I live, of course.

I tried karaoke in Morioka, when I was in Japan, it was much more fun in Japan than in England, usually a better selection of songs too. I usually went for songs like Korpiklaani - Wooden Pints and other songs that reward enthusiasm over actual skill :)

If someday someone takes me to karaoke in Tokyo the only song I would be happy of singing would be Yuki no Shingun, I love the melody, the lyrics and the story about the song. It's a marching song so besides lifting the spirit in difficult times the melody it is also easy to sing. I am a man that can't sing but with this song and some practice I could be number one in karaoke in Japan.

I noticed that the karaoke activity is always in a small private room. Is this always so? The format i am used to is usually in bars, performing for fellow bar patrons. love in dobutsuenmae osaka, go by the puplic karaokebars to sing. its great also for tryin japanese skills using ;) some old japanes songs you can here there singed with whole soul :D my everyyear vacation there~~. when i first time heared about karaoke it was not so interessting.. but once in a bar i sayed "its for european very intime, like kissing another man.." shortly after that sentence some coworkers from a company come in and was joking kissing each other ;D after that i had no excuese not to try it. was so funny that i mentioned, there you can be freer behaving then anywhere and try it once.. meanwhile, i mind, soul enjoys that way of drinking with other ppls.. an amazing succes on social life, karoshi generation, never learned burn out ;)
