    My sister lived in Milan in the late 70's and her boyfriend Ricardo had a big black Quattroporte just like the one at the beginning of this video - we drove around Milan on a snowy, wet day, shopping during the week before Christmas, swerving and squishing and darting through the crazy Milanese traffic, Ricardo gesturing and cursing the whole time at the other drivers. I was sixteen at the time and I loved cars but had no idea about this one. It was big and fast with a low grumble when he blipped the throttle between gear shifts. The seats were soft and pillowy and ridiculously comfortable, upholstered in a deep mahogany burgundy glove soft leather. A hand me down vehicle from his father that he held on to for sentimental reasons. A wonderful Christmas memory from my youth!

    Usually I agree with Clarkson on most reviews, but I think he been mean spirited over critical on this one. He overlooks the many positives like: the svelte sharp Marcello Gandini design, the beautiful artisan materials of the interior (leather, wood, carpet etc...), the single minded Italian mien, the attitude compared with rivals which are soo contrived and capitalistic. This car is very noble and understated, you buy the car for yourself, not to impress others!

    • @MrGts92
      @MrGts92 9 років тому +7

      "Svelte"?? Svelte means graceful and slim. It has a fat boot! Saying things poetically to make a case for a car, which basically has leather and wood?

      TheYorkMan well these days especially with the new gen the reliability issues aren't as bad intact even the last gen qp was as reliable as any german saloon it was the clutch plate on the cambiocorsa that was the issue cause it broke way to easily but maserati isn't using that box anymore

      E34Benzin so is the e30 and the e34 bmw... those cars are anything but beautiful as are many of the new german saloons today. personally i like the way this maserati looks and the more you look at it the more it grows on you and you start to love it. furthermore this car is hand built, and the artistry that goes into building these cars makes it beautiful alone.

      That's not surprising.
      Maserati's of this era (even the really boxy ones) are both sexy and classy at the same time. You can say that about very few cars. From the regular "lot", only E38 7-series comes to my mind.

      I think every one of these saloon , the DeTomaso, the Lagonda, the Ferrari 400 and all the others, whilst they might not've been the best each maker ever came up with, they were certainly unique.
      I don't think this is the best Quatroporte model, but it's still a lovely looking car from some angles.
      However I do agree the price "was" just daft in comparison to everything else for just the badge.
      Especially when ye consider what ye got.
      And what you could've gotten 2nd hand for a similar price.
      But still, they were all classy exotics no matter what people say.

    Shame he never reviewed the later version with its 3.2L, 350 HP Twin turbo V8 that was originally developed for F1 racing. What other 4 door car could top 170 mph, 0-60 in 5.5 sec, was rock solid at high speeds (due to downforce from the fat arse), handled like a hot hatch in the twisties, seated 5 in comfort, and had a mindblowing 40 -120 acceleration in third gear for awesome overtaking? It was the fastest 4 door car on the planet. A saloon with the performance of a 911 tturbo of the era. With
    wonderful hand made interior and restrained styling so you can use it everyday without being gawped at. But only about 10 people in the UK can still experience that, because that is about the number still in existence here.

      @Heatfarmer 5 років тому

      @Venturi Atlantique Oh yeah, but i expect Jeremy Clarkson to be able to do a bit of research and even have a bit of personal knowledge to back up his sometimes erratic statements. Everybody were loosing it back then. Even Ferrari. To say that Maserati wasn't famous in the 60's and 70's is simply mindblowing.

    • @judethaddaeus9742
      @judethaddaeus9742 5 років тому +2

      The ‘60s were their heyday in passenger cars, but not in racing, which they’d stopped in the late 1950s. By the ‘70s they were failing rapidly making comfort-focused cars, having been bought by Citroen, which was also failing. The Khamsin, Bora, and Merak were all beautiful, but had zero racing pedigree, weren’t anywhere near as well-regarded as Ferrari’s line and fell into obscurity relative to what Lamborghini offered at the time. By the mid-1970s and DeTomaso’s buyout, Maserati had fallen quite far indeed. They still haven’t fully recovered.

    • @judethaddaeus9742
      @judethaddaeus9742 5 років тому +1

      Venturi Atlantique Chrysler never bought Maserati. They bought Lamborghini in the ‘80s. Fiat AG bought Maserati from deTomaso in 1992.

    • @judethaddaeus9742
      @judethaddaeus9742 5 років тому

      Venturi Atlantique Nope. Chrysler partnered in the late ‘80s to make the TC by Maserati, which was essentially a gussied-up LeBaron convertible with a Chrysler engine tuned by Maserati . But that was the extent of their relationship. No Maserati was a Chrysler design and Chrysler never owned any part of the company until it merged with Fiat about 10 years ago to form FCA.

    i wouldn't trust any sort of review that was or is on tv. journalism is journalism regardless of what kind and there is bias. that being said brands pay to have the car reviewed and they can buy a good one or a bad one. look up vids of people revving the engine in this car and it sounds amazing. look up people driving this car and it handles extremely well. i think it was just typical unreliability of source as opposed to actual deign flaws in the car. also maserati didn't disappear and then spontaneously appear like bugatti. the brand still had a good name in the 80's with the quattroporte and the people who bought those cars were mainly of aristocratic background. they were also more expensive than a ferrari or lamb and thats the way its always been so i highly doubt people especially in england have never heard of maserati at the time. I'm italian and i was born into this passion so i know a thing or two about italian cars and brands and i can tell you if you go for an italian car simply based on history alone it can only be a maserati. ferrari was stubborn and got into more arguments then he won races ever. and before they pulled out of racing maserati dominated ferrari in the 50's and the best drivers resided there exe. fangio and sterling moss. and compared to the lamborghini it was always miles ahead. these cars always felt special not because it was an italian super car but because it was always a higher car than a typical super car and the aristocracies around the world bought them like crazy for this fact. by the time the daytona came around ferrari wasn't hand building cars anymore, with maserati the generation qp before the fourth was 100% hand made and is still extremely fast even by todays standards.
    also im not hating on ferrari and lamborghini they are truly fantastic cars and are amongst my favourites but there is nothing on this planet like the maserati

    • @MrPabsUk

      No Maserati has ever been based on any Lancia/Alfa/Fiat chassis, neither do they share engines. Occasionally electrics, but thats all.
      The most similar chassis set up you will find is the 60`s-90`s Jaguar XJ, but Maserati used V6 engines instead of the straight 6 Jaguar traditionally used.

    • @Heatfarmer
      @Heatfarmer 6 років тому

      Just Lancia? Wow. You are talking about a manufacturer, who was first with V6, V4, independent suspension and rear transaxle. Ferrari build its F1 team succes on Lancia D50s. Lancia was rather succesful in the rally world in the 70's and 80's. Fiat screwed up the brand during the 70's after taking over in 1968, but before that Lancia was in many ways what Jaguar was in the UK. Superior cars made for the long road trips.

    • @andreamoroni97
      @andreamoroni97 5 років тому

      @@Heatfarmer Ferrari had already 2 titles (1952-1953), the D50s were just a gift from Gianni Lancia and they were completely modified into the 801, which raced for one year and hasn't won anything for Scuderia Ferrari, so no, Lancia never built Ferrari's success unlike Alfa Romeo which is the mother of Scuderia Ferrari.

      No, the Quattroporte IV was just a re-skinned Biturbo/430. Same instrument panel and everything. Big Lancias had all been FWD since the Gamma. This is RWD.

    The earlier Quattroporte was far more beautiful. As is the current one. I was unfamiliar with this generation of Quattroporte until seeing this video. It seems cheesy in every way, and with no redeeming attributes.
    An aside: way back in his Big Hair phase, Clarkson is already learning how to make the review more about him than about the car.
