Kee is probably technically a better player. But they’re both great. I don’t prefer either, they both played great, melodic solos. The musicianship in Europe was always really good.
Both are superb guitarist for sure! John is the original and so there's alot of love and the fact that he's long back in the fold will make the purists happy! That said, Key came in, did a fab job and kept Europe running for a good while, well I'll always be grateful for that and his work on out of this world stands up for itself! Both are talented gentlemen with their own merits! I'm thankful for both of them! 👏👏👏
I think my favorite solo of all time is superstitious, there's only one of the solo from Helloween I'm alive, that I think you can even compare to the solo on superstitious 💯
Both have totally different styles. Norum is bluesy and classic Heavy Metal oriented while Kee is from Van Halen school, so he masters many great techniques. They are just different, no one is above the other.

Those would be players like Warrren DeMartini or George Lynch or Paul Gilbert if we're talking about someone with a similar technical level. Kee's style is very continental European. There's a Glam twist to it, but to me it sounds more "East Coast" than Van Halen.

What you hear does not fit what you see... Kee's fingers keep performing what is obviously an arpeggio but the sound is one sustaining note. Very bizarre.

Not true. I agree that Norum has great tone and vibrato, and he's an excellent player. Kee, though........he has that as well, plus that he can do ANYTHING on a guitar. He can be flashy and fast, or he can be melodic and sensuous. His palette is wider.

I love John. But in my opinion, Kee uses more different techniques. Like Tapping, legato licks, sweeping, etc. which we dont see at John´s playing. John also plays scales up and down and phrases of it, while kee is more melodic, and also uses different modes.
Idk what you're talking about. In this video itself, I saw John sweeping, and Alternate Picking. In terms of melody, both have great melodies, but I think Kee is a bit more technical
I agree. technical point of view, Kee is a great while John has more hard rock and bluesy feelings , I mean John can play speedy songs easily but less technic oriented playing but more song oriented.
John plays from the heart and that what counts in my book. Who made Europe explode and is still in the band ? JOHN NORUM I love Kee for his contributions to Europe, but he did Easy Action really great and it was more what he was made for, in my opinion.
I’m a Kee guy. I think everything from technique, tone, how he builds and writes a solo, is way more soothing to the ear. Not to mention his melodies just finds a home in the song and you really look forward to them every time. That’s special. Norum is a great player, but he ain’t Marcello level 😎
Norum's playing takes the best parts of Gary Moore and Michael Schenker with his own unique spin on it - a style that was one of the keys to The Final Countdown's success, and thus why we all know the band Europe today. Marcello admitted that he wasn't even a fan of Europe's music before he joined. He was just a hired gun, not a true fit for Europe's sound, but he did well nonetheless. Kee isn't in the same universe as John.

He messed up the chemistry (which is what Ian Haugland once said) and the band lacked fire and passion without John. Kee's solos are nothing compared to John Norum's. Norum's playing fits Europe's sound. If Kee played at a higher level they would've kept him, and he wouldn't spend all his time bad mouthing Europe and doing terrible covers of their hit songs.

Norum didn't just grow up with the band, he actually founded it with Joey, and they built their sound up together over many years before TFC became a hit. Their chemistry is basically Europe's entire sound, and Joey has said this on many occasions - he calls it 'the fire'. Joey flew to LA and begged John to rejoin Europe after he left them. What does that tell you? Kee was never a true member of the band. He, like many rock musicians, has an ego which tells him that Europe was successful because of him. The fact is they were far weaker with him in the band, so much so that they only lasted two albums with Kee before Europe split up.

They put the band on ice as they realized that grunge was going to make them obsolete, which happened to so many bands. It was a good decision back then. I followed them here in Sweden from being just another talented local band, winning a band contest and so on. Clearly, Joey and John was a special combination, but while Joey was more extrovert, John was quite the opposite. Kee was from my hometown, some 400 miles north of Stockholm, so he didn't grow up with these lads - BUT - his relationship with Joey started earlier as they did a project together and when John quit, Joey didn't have to audition a ton of guys, he knew Kee would fit the bill.

For me Europe were never better than throughout the ‘Out of This World’ & ‘Prisoners in Paradise’ era with Kee. His touch, tone, taste, and technique helped define the best music Europe ever produced. I like John Norum too but it’s Europe with Kee Marcello that is almost always my ‘go to listen’!

Music is all about your preferences. Yes there are good and bad musicians, however comparing two professionals like Kee and John is really not about who is the best guitar player. In this video I prefer Johns solo over Kees even if "the flight of the bumblebee" is a true testament to Kees skill and speed. I've always prefered Kees playing, the solo he wrote for the song superstitious. It's magical!
I rather prefer Kee Marcello from the start I've heard him on "Out of this world" because is much more inventive, sparkling, melodic, ballsy than John Norum which, I'm sorry to say, he's rehashing more of the same tunes from "The Final Countdown" until now. I love them both but...

Started listening to Europe with my Cuz, he prefers John, I prefer Kee. I think it is down to the listener, otherwise they on same level but different.
John Norum is the guy who made me want to pick up a guitar. His phrasing and technique is phenomenal. Kee is a complete different type of musician. A great player and his speed and technical ability is amazing,. However, I go for Norum hands down. He has moved with the times. Kee is a shredder which seems to have stayed within his style up until this day, which isn't a good thing. Still love them both to death though.

Both are great players, Norum played on their biggest album, and added a bluesy flavor mixed with Neo classical. Kee was more from the Randy Rhoads school of Neo Classical.
Kee is a great talent, but I always have and always will prefer to listen to John. His playing has so much more feel and can "move" me in so many ways. I'd listen to John's playing on Angels with Broken Hearts any time over any of Lee's shedding. Kee is great, but not the one I prefer.

Yo diría que Marcello puede tocar más estilo fusion como Allan Holdsworth quizás, como en el solo de " Just the beginning" o "Towers Calling" Norum es más Gary Moore o John Sykes, de hecho hay un disco del 94 de Norum que se lo dedica a Gary Moore. Los dos son magistrales pero si me tengo que quedar con uno sería Kee Marcello. Los solos de Out of this world me volaron la cabeza. Saludos.

I rather prefer Kee Marcello from the start I've heard him on "Out of this world" because is much more inventive, sparkling, melodic, ballsy than John Norum which, I'm sorry to say, he's rehashing more of the same tunes from "The Final Countdown" until now. I love them both but...
Love the footage.. though I don’t compare as they are so different but both amazing. It’s a disservice to split hairs between them. I saw Kee live in 87 and hope to see John before he retires

Started listening to Europe with my Cuz, he prefers John, I prefer Kee. I think it is down to the listener, otherwise they on same level but different.

Lets not forget the amazing playing that John provided Don Dokken's solo album. Kee is an extremely versital player and killer guitarist as well.

John Norum is the guy who made me want to pick up a guitar. His phrasing and technique is phenomenal. Kee is a complete different type of musician. A great player and his speed and technical ability is amazing,.
However, I go for Norum hands down. He has moved with the times. Kee is a shredder which seems to have stayed within his style up until this day, which isn't a good thing.
Still love them both to death though.

Both are great; it's just like discussing about DAve Murray and Adrian Smith; it's senseless comparing them; both great guitars, both different styles; it would be great that Europe release one album with both of them !!

John is a hardrock guitarist. Kee isnt. John is far better.
John Norum almost gets his fingers paralyzed when trying to play the Out of this world solos...It is impossble to state he is "much better" than Kee.

Escalas, velocidad, digitación no es ser virtuoso. Sino lo q se crea cn todo eso. Norum siempre tuvo lo necesario para Europe y sus solos son perfectos. The final Countdown x ejemplo transmite sentimiento q ningún otro solo le quedaría.
Kee is a much, much, much, much, way much better guitar playera than the other guy ...... if the Out Of This World was a blast, not only for the música and the lyrics of ir but for every fucking solo on that album was huge ....... Kee was on diré on that album.

Both are great players, Norum played on their biggest album, and added a bluesy flavor mixed with Neo classical. Kee was more from the Randy Rhoads school of Neo Classical.

Kee is a great talent, but I always have and always will prefer to listen to John. His playing has so much more feel and can "move" me in so many ways. I'd listen to John's playing on Angels with Broken Hearts any time over any of Lee's shedding. Kee is great, but not the one I prefer.

O solo do Norum é autoral. O Kee replicou uma música existente. Não há comparação...Até hoje Kee está devendo os solos corretamente dos 3 primeiros discos do Europe. Principalmente Ninja. Ele nunca conseguiu tocar.
Yo diría que Marcello puede tocar más estilo fusion como Allan Holdsworth quizás, como en el solo de " Just the beginning" o "Towers Calling" Norum es más Gary Moore o John Sykes, de hecho hay un disco del 94 de Norum que se lo dedica a Gary Moore.
Los dos son magistrales pero si me tengo que quedar con uno sería Kee Marcello. Los solos de Out of this world me volaron la cabeza.
