Hey Jamie, I’ve used the mosquito bracelet. I didn’t feel like they still worked, but here’s a natural way to repel those pasty mosquitoes and I know cause my property is right next to a canal in Central Florida. I love this and it’s all natural and you’ll smell good. 🥰
Cinnamon and water can be used to make a mosquito repellent by steeping cinnamon in warm water and then adding other ingredients to the mixture:
Whisk 2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon into 4 cups of warm water.
Steep the mixture for about an hour, similar to steeping tea.
Strain the liquid into a spray bottle.
Add half a teaspoon of dish soap and half a teaspoon of rubbing alcohol to the mixture.
Shake the bottle well and spray.

Hi Janey,I have tried the OFF bracelets, but no luck for me here in Florida with them. I have been watching you since you started several years ago. I know I rarely comment, but I'm always here. I have to say how very proud I am of you! I knew you would be successful, and you are an inspiration to this Florida gardner. :) I want you to know that I will never think of Petunias the same way. I will forever think of your garden, especially how stunning it was! I have also been wanting that purple bean (I forget its name at the moment) you had it grow up and around your pole in the backyard - beautiful color. Anyhow, I just had to tell you how truly proud I am of you. I have been here since your 2nd month of videos and I will forever! KEEP SMILING!!! YOU DESERVE EVERYTHING THAT COMES YOUR WAY!!!

Donna here, back when my kids were young I tied dryer sheets around their wrists. That seemed to work better than the bracelets you are talking about. I have a couple of pairs of leggings that have mesh pockets. after rubbing down my arms and ankles I stick them in my pockets. After that I'm not bothered by mosquitos, just deer flies.

    Janie,
For your shade garden, rather than spending money on a shade tarp, I would suggest trying to just move around the plants that you have there already. I know that heuchera, brunnera, and coleus can all definitely take more sun than hosta, so maybe just reposition what you have and move the hosta's to the shadiest spot so they won't burn as much.
I would also look into maybe some cute smaller ornamental tree that can grow in your area that can help cast just a little bit of more shade for that garden. Maybe a taiwan flowering cherry tree or a chinese fringe tree and maintain it to be a smaller tree.
Love how things are shaping up! Living in TX, I'm jealous of some of the beautiful things you can grow there 😅

Janey, I personally haven’t found the bracelets to work very well. But I do love a product by Avon called “skin so soft”. It is a baby oil like material. I even heard that the US military used it for a while for soldiers to keep the bugs away. not sure if that’s true, but I definitely have found it works extremely well.

here is my alternative to bug spray that has worked in many environments -- from canada to the deep south of the US, from central and south america to africa, as well as australia and NZ. I haven't yet traveled to asia/south east asia. someday, though.
I use lemongrass -- the kind you can pick up at a grocery store, fresh -- and steep it in sweet almond oil (you can also use other carrier oils, i just like this one as a general carrier). You may want to steep it in a cool, dry place (without light) for about a month or so). strain off the lemongrass from the oil.
Test it on a safe spot on your skin, and see how it goes for you. If it's too intense, cut it with more sweet almond oil.
After I shower, I rub myself in the oil. I let it soak into my skin so it doesn't get sticky on my clothes. Then, I put on my clothes.
I also will add lemongrass to vodka to make a basic "costume spray" -- again, you let it steep for a while, but this you can do anywher ereally. Once it smells like lemongrass, you make a costume spray, use this on your clothes.
And then, you know, what's on you isn't stinky, and what's on your clothes isn't stinky.
But I don't get bug bites when I use these.

Everything looks great, Janey! Congrats on getting all that planting done! That hydrangea and the browalia in the shade garden are SO beautiful, as will everything be when in bloom!
Just a caution: apple seeds have a small amount of cyanide-based poison in them, so Monty shouldn't be eating them. He probably hasn't eaten enough to have any effect, but maybe you should just strip the fruit from your side of the fence.🤔

My waiting to be planted or being rooted plants are all lined up and have drip emitters called 180degree adjustable drip emitters on a 6 inch stake. You can twist them closed when you have planted the plant. I can then put it in and turn it back on when I have another plant. I run it about 10 minutes every morning and afternoon when it is hot. I have one end that is under a tree and the other end is close to full sun. I am so impressed that y’all got all those plants out and on drip.

When the apple dropped 😫 apples are like the one fruit that I can grow in my garden. I know it’s highly recommended to thin apples but honestly we never thin ours. I find that the tree will kind of naturally drop its fruit on its own if it needs “thinning”. I really don’t see a size difference in the fruit either. The only case where it may be a good idea is if the branch is to stressed it may break but that rarely happens if they’re pruned properly.

It was so nice meeting back in February at the PNW flower and garden show. I was curious how long was it before you started to notice a significant difference in your soil after you amended it with the compost layer? I’m finally working on my front yard and the soil is really hard to dig into and it’s full of so many rocks. Seeing the difference between your backyard and front garden makes me think adding compost is the way to go for me.

I’d ask Finoula for suggestions for storing large numbers of plants! Eg back behind your tool shed with a layer of sawdust on the ground and an automated sprinkler system.

Get Off Clip-on’s by S C Johnson, I have been using them for years. It is a battery powered little fan that you clip on your hip & you just change out the refills periodically. They work great for me & make it where I can even use it after 8 PM at night which is the “witching hour “for mosquitoes here in Wisconsin. & believe me we have them here as I live on the lake. I too hate the smell of Mosquito spay…this has no smell.

Bugs argh!!! I've found that the Thermacell Portable Mosquito repeller works. I have used this for years, it can be found on A, BB stores etc. sports stores. It will keep a 15' area clear. It can be worn or you could hang it on your garden cart.

The mosquitoes are fierce here in Florida and rubbing Bounce softener sheets all over my uncovered skin & sticking the sheet into my pocket works wonders for me. And I smell lovely too!

Get a yard fire hydrant. I got one for my dog and he used that instead of my plants.

When the insects start bugging me I drink 6 oz of water with a half teaspoon of baking soda WELL MIXED. It seems to work. I think it changes my pH. I'm with you on the bug spray. YUCK.

Hi Janey, I was hoping you could answer my question about your irrigation time and how often for your plants in full Sun area. I know it is not an exact science. But I would really appreciate knowing how long and how often you run your irrigation for plants in full sun.

You and Jason got a lot more done today and it's looking great! The hydrangea planter will be so beautiful when it blooms. ( As you were showing the last of your plants left to plant and seeing all the loose stones, I thought about your fall earlier. Please be careful Janey, we don't want you hurt again! )

My SIL was not able to be outside in the evening because of the welts she’d get from mosquito bites. She uses bracelets she found on Amazon for about $4. They’re in Fresno so that was a good portion of the year where she hadn’t be able to enjoy beautiful evenings in their garden. She swears by them.

Good morning, Janey☕️ For the Delosperma, can you plant them right to the left of where they’re sitting 17:19 in that “rock river bed” that separates the driveway and carport?

Wow, you and Jason are working so hard! Your garden is looking GREAT. Question, a few months ago, I remember watching you use PW Soluble Fertilizer in an Ortho Dial n Spray. My garden is getting bigger, and I've decided that a water can is just too much work. Can you let me know which video that was, so I can watch it again? Thanks so much for all your videos, they are so inspiring, and I learn so much from you. ❤
