I have changed both rear for my wife car with new ones
After have it out from Garage, while driving on the bumps you feel the car like jumping form back side when ton drive on bumps
I went back to the garage and he told that we need to do calibration for air suspension after changing shock observers
He did that calibration
But still the car jumps after driving on any bumps
Please help me
I didn't have to do any recalibration and even if you did that wouldn't cause wandering issues when going over bumps.
Either something is super loose or you have bushings worn completely out.
@3:10 i was never able to remove that bolt, in fact it broke the head off. I had to buy a new lower control arm

Apparently my 2011 x5 50i has different rear shock mounts than yours. And the third row seating set up makes access to the shock top mount extremely labor intensive. Will first check if I can access as easily as you did in this video, then will post video if it is different.
Ok I'm interested to see how the 3rd row of seats affects this job. Good luck and be sure to update us.
Longer stroke of the Bilsteins should give you better ride quality & handling as well. How do you like them compared to the stock ones? Did you need to replace the rear shock mounts as well? It looks like your car has the self-leveling suspension but not the 3rd-row seat?
Bilsteins are great, possibly a slight improvement in ride, but to be honest it rode great before. The shock mounts in the rear aren't really a wear item so there's no need to replace them. It's basically just an aluminum adapter. Yep, air suspension equipped, but no 3rd row seats. I don't know if it was special ordered that way or not. It's how it was when I bought it.

Great video and exactly all the steps I went through first the tailgate adjustment still had noise so it has to be shock on same side right rear

Hi I great video sir lots of great detail on this video!! ty for posting,excellentttt , I have a 2013 x5 35i x 3.0 litre engine,. wonder if you or "anyone can help me"??? im confused..... possibly you can help ... i purchased my vehicle 4 years ago and i am second owner... i dont know who owned it before (bmw would not give me any information).------ i purchased it from a used independent dealership. tell me if im wrong as this is my first bmw . ok , in the morning when i firsttouch the door handle, (comfort access) the car "wakes up" (after it was locked at nighttime) and it makes a buzzing sound underneath the vehicle somewhere for 4-5 seconds. its been doing this ever since i owned it. So I just figured /assumed it was the/ air pump/compressor for the rear air bags and all was ok. So,2 weeks ago i went to my brothers cabin that wasnt used for years so i took lots of camping gear and material ( 300 lbs estimated) just in case i had to do carpenter repairs and i also towed a utility trailer with a 450 lbs quad for about 3 hours driving on the highway. All was fine with the weight and towing, until, when i got back home 4 days later from my trip and realized the next morning ,the vehicle was rough riding...but when i wake it up in that morning it would still make that buzzing sound/ as i thought air bag compressor. i felt that this vehicle was not riding right and was actually looked low on the back.. so i put the vehicle in my garage jacked it up and when i checked the rear suspension of the vehicle i was suprised to see that my vehicle has coil springs in it not air bags..!! for some reason thought it had air bags because of the 4-5 second buzzing ( i think bmw calls these Air Bags, Air Springs". ) ok, the thing is. i dont see any air compressor at the right front, underneath the passenger side floor ogf my 2013 x5 35i x . i took of the plastic shields all along underneath this area and dont see any compressor or even any air lines or electrical plugins for a compressor..., althought on utube here it was said that it was underneath the passengers floor. not so on my vehicle... there is no pump/compressor or any lines at all to connect to any compressor.... i figured now that the original owner converted this vehicle to springs ( the number on the rear springs OEM 6 779 860 WHICH IS A good bmw part number.... im stumped... i noticed that both coil springs were both broken badly and i did not use the vehicle and crossreferenced the part number to Rockauto and got these 2 new springs and installed them. i noticed that the right rear gas Shock ( i have to order 2 new shocks and 2 new mounts also from rockauto)was not pressurized when i unscrewed the 3 top shock mount plate nuts because i could not get the lower bolt to moved because it was seized ,( i have to heat to heat it up)so i just took out the 3 nuts on this top mount and shock assemble and lowered the control arm assembly enough to install these new springs, the problem now is im still stumped as to what that noise is and is it possible that this vehicle one came with "air bags" and the origanal owner just replaced these springs because of a problem with air bags?? again i cannot see any compressor anywhere or any sign of any air lines nowhere.... im baffled i would love to hear your input/thoughts.suggestions. thank you in advance for you input
That noise is your fuel pump pressurizing the system to get ready to start the engine.
Not at X5s came with air suspension in fact most probably just had coil springs like yours. I believe the air suspension was mainly for X5s with 3rd row seating.

just about to my 2011 X5 7 seater. seems easy with all the explanation. I did my front struts with a whole of other mounts, so this is final. I changed the airbag in Mar 22, this will complete the rear end. Thanks heaps
just done the RIGHT rear. was really easy after watching the video. Not much different between the 7 seater and 5 seater. Issue i had was the bump stop was completely demolished. Here is my suggestion for anyone doing this, if you are going to take the time to change the struts then change the rubbers and the bump stop. its not expensive but i bought the rubbers but not the bump stop. i installed the new shock with the rubber minus the bump stop. Bump stop will arrive in 3 weeks. will redo the right shock with the additional part than change the left side complete. So annoying considering it was Xmas & the New Year Break and they don't have the parts and will have to come from overseas. Should have planned better. anyway my 5 cents worth.

I've had it for about a year and a half. It had 98K miles when I got it. Has 112K on it now.

I replaced the OEM shocks with a pair of Bilstein B4s, just like you did in this video (procedure was a little different since I have the third row). After replacing, the car rides extremely harsh, with the shocks bottoming out often. Wife is pissed. Before I go down the path of replacing these brand new struts with OEM, just wanna confirm that the ride quality shouldn't get much harsher, and that the car definitely shouldn't be bottoming out. My old shocks that I replaced were completely worn out with no spring back, just an FYI.
The ride was pretty much the same for me with the new Bilsteins. Definitely not harsh. If you feel like you're bottoming out, that's usually an indication of bad springs. Are you airbags in the back? If it's coils, and the old shocks were really that shot, it's possible that she isn't used to having spring dampening back there. Dunno, that's kind of a confusing situation

@@jcx2bby I will edit the rear shocks this weekend. I have to finish the 1988 528e alternator replacement and LPFP replacement and front seat redying and sound deadening beforehand. But yeah...third row seat x5 is VASTLY different and way more work than this version.

I love my E70 too. I just kinda wish I didn't have the N63 although it has been kind to me so far.
@@jcx2bby why? I have the N55 and would prefer the N63 , although maintenance is higher
@@danielrd7493 the performance of the N63 is wonderful. But these motors are known for short lifespans. Overcomplicated to the highest degree. Oddball exhaust manifold and turbo placement that absolutely cooks the heads and valve seals. My N63 has had the seals replaced once already. Only has 123K on it.
I own a 2011 bmw x5 with 87k miles. Do you think that changing the shocks will make a big difference in the way it rides? Do you have a suggestions on shocks that might make the car ride more plush? I am not looking for a sporty ride as I do a lot of highway driving. Also do you believe this car has a high decibel noise when cruising? Mine is at about 71dbl - thank you for the great video.
I appreciate the comment. Do you have airbags in the back of your X5? If so, there's not going to be much you can do to make the ride more plush unless you swap the bags out for springs. Then you can look at different spring rates and things like that. If you do swap for springs my understanding is that you'll have to code the airbags out of the car computer or you'll get some error lights. But replacing the shocks on their own probably isn't going to do too much for making your ride more comfortable. And I actually think my X5 is pretty quiet when I'm on the highway given how heavy and powerful it is.

@@AM4project I'm sure the diesel adds to the noise level a bit. 100K miles is a good time to swap out suspension components or at least give them a good once over. Good luck with it
Tire choice can affect both ride comfort and highway noise. You could go to a smaller diameter wheel if yours is one of the larger diameter ones. (Being a diesel, probably not.) We bought ours used with Goodyear run-flats that were wearing out, and eventually moved to Michelins and they really are quiet on the highway. Concrete is always noisier, of course, but the only time its loud for us is in a construction zone where the concrete has been scraped in preparation for asphalt. Then weird loud noises begin! But 99.9% of the time, .the Michelins are wonderful.
Oh, and changing shocks can make a big difference in ride! I've not done it on an E70, but I can say that switching to Bilsteins can sometimes just make the ride harsh. If you're replacing shocks, consider Sachs/BOGE.
@@theundergroundlairofthesqu9261 this is good advice. One of the best things I did on my X5 was ditch those awful run flat tires. Way quieter and softer ride now. I went with Goodyears on my car and haven't looked back.

I get it, I lived in Germany for 4 and a half years. But you'd be hard pressed to find someone in the states who didn't look at you like an oddball for saying it that way.
How do you compare the ride with the rear air bags vs springs? Which one is softer in your opinion ?
The shock absorbers work with the air bags....they don't replace them if that's what you meant. Not sure if I quite understood your question

@@chrise202 ah, I see. So the X5 I have is fitted with airbags in the back and I have not replaced them with springs. My car is pretty stiff which allows sublime handling for such a big car.
My wife's X3 has springs on the back and while I don't find it near as stiff, it is also the base model X3 sdrive 28i, nothing special at all about it.
Personally I think springs allow for more cushion, but only in stock form. Once you install any kind of lowering spring, it will stiffen the car up as well.
Idk if that answered your question, but it is my experience with such things

Depends on a lot of things like environment, driving style etc. But if yours have never been changed 80K to 100K miles is a good interval to swap them out at.

@@kenchiu1083 The fronts take more wear than the rear, due to the weight of the engine and the stress of the steering. I'd be examining things by the 75K mark at least, with the idea of replacing them around 80-90K.
It is all very subjective and situations vary. If quality components were installed, you might be good well past the 100k mark...you just have to inspect things and go from there.

This was my conclusion too! I sound insulated almost every piece of trim in the back and there was still clunking on dips. Thank you for making this vid!
Do you have torque specs by any chance? With newtis down, I can't find torque specs.
When you were checking for looseness towards the end, what were the two pops?
The pops were the floor jack moving when i was prying under the tire.
I never got the torque specs but just used my long 1/2 ratchet from HF and tightened those bolts as much as possible. They were incredibly tight when I loosened them.
Even now, I still sense a slight thud from that dang liftgate/hatch/whatever. I am tempted to weld that latching mechanism solid as I believe the movement in it is what causes the hatch to pop.

@@jcx2bby if you pull on the latch alone does it move? Sadly you can't weld it because it moves. Idk why I never though of this just now but have you tried driving with the gates open? I think that'd help identify the rattling. I also have a spare which make me wonder if some of the clunk is from the tire bouncing around.
Loving these videos. I’ve got a 2011 E70 w/96k miles. Have you noticed any improvement in ride quality with the suspension refresh?
@@eurotrashdtm thanks Dino. My X5 certainly is much quieter now with a ghr new suspension pieces, but I'll be honest, it drives about the same. I was expecting some improvement in drivability but it was so good before, even with the worn out stuff, it didn't improve the way I thought it might. Just shows how well built the suspension is on these E70s. Say what you want about the test of the car, but the chassis and suspension are beautiful.
