The fact that the MCAS system only used one sensor is an incredibly stupid oversight. First rule of aircraft engineering is redundancy. That lesson was learned decades ago.
It was done on purpose. Apparently if it had been done properly with both sensors, it would have been considered a “major system modification” and would have added expense to the extension of pilots’ type ratings from the NG to the MAX. Of course now the cost of the MAX grounding and upgrades has dwarfed anything the bean counters would have saved, but they still get their raises and bonuses and of course no consequences for their actions.
MCAS? The fact that they had to resort to software solution to compensate the aerodynamic flaw that appeared because they had to use an oversized engine that no longer fit the 60 years old airframe is the actual stupid decision.

Before the Max crashes the 737 had one of the best safety records in the business. Remember the 737 was certified in 1967. But in the 1990’s it was grounded because of a condition called runaway ruder caused by a servo unit manufactured by Parker Hannifin. Two crashes killed 153 people which caused the grounding of the plane just like now with the MAX. The plane that came out of that accident investigation became the safest plane until the Max accidents. I have no doubts that just like before, this new 737 will be the best and safest aircraft ever built. I flown in the 737-8 already and I am perfectly satisfied.
737 is a great plane but it is old and not efficient. The MAX is a bad modification of it. Because of new big engine the plane is not balanced and it wants to go nose down but they compensated this with software which uses the tail aileron. For normal weather situations this will work but in case of emergency when you need to pull up fast the nose of the plane it will fail.
I actually flew the same flight you did on the Max last week on AA MCO to MIA! It was also my first flight since the pandemic began so it was quite interesting.
I will be flying on a 737 Max 9 in June, from PTY to PUJ and then from PTY to SJO on the connection on the flight back. I will not deny I am a little concerned, however, I really hope that all has been addressed and the flights go well.
People who says they won't fly on a Boeing seems to justify with a zero airbus accident record...... No one wants to have an accident but simply saying airbus is better is not much of an argument because I can find quite a big list of airbus accidents. In my opinion when someone has the most the lose, I'm quite confident they'll make sure it's bulletproof.

Hey Sam ! Regardless of how much effort you are putting in polishing the image of the 737-MAX, yet the mistakes there were committed by Boeing are quite unforgettable !
It’s a very good post. We can see behind the backdoor of re-certification of the 737 MAX. It’s a quite comprehensive coverage. Thank you Mr. Sam Chui 😊🙏🏼
I flew a United MAX9 Houston to San Jose a couple weeks ago. Great flight and never had a minute's worry about it. Since recertification, MAX aircraft now have over 300,000 flights and over 600,000 hours with zero incidents. With all the attention, scrutiny and review it received, the MAX is probably one of the safest aircraft to fly. While there are likely some folks who are still hesitant or refuse to fly on a MAX, you wouldn't know it by the flight I was on - every seat was occupied. And apparently, airline companies are too concerned about the MAX safety with over 4,000 planes currently on order with Boeing.
I'm thinking that Boeing and United high officials, with their families, should fly the Max on several occasions just to show it's safe. Personally, I have no problem flying Max in the future.
I've flown all over the world many times and for many years. Having said that, I will never fly on this particular aircraft, as I'm terrified a new problem will be found.
I currently fly the 737 and recently went through the FAA mandated additional training required to fly the MAX. I have no problem flying, or being a passenger, on a 737 MAX - zero. But to each their own.
Happy to see this airplane back in action, especially during COVID. Living in Singapore now, I have to say I miss United domestic service. I love the United staff back in the USA! Thanks for always being so relevant and devoted to your av-geek fans, Sam! ❤️😃 Every book has its tough chapters, BUT, if Boeing did it right this time...here's to the MAX....I hope we'll see the next 737 chapter be positive for everyone.
“If we can’t control the trim on the plane” is always a good start. Also, would I fly a MAX? Yes. Do I think safety culture at Boeing is an absolute disaster? Yes.
They made mcas so it only activates once so what he said about runaway trim stabilizers isn’t even possible today. He is just telling you that even if mcas wasn’t fixed they know how to disable it. You do know it’s possible for a runaway trim stabilizer to happen on any plane with automatic trimming right.
I don’t think the safety culture is a disaster, it’s a lot better today than it was say, 2-3 years ago. They’ve really turned things around and I think things will be pretty positive for Boeing going forward.
@@DontUputThatEvilOnMe If it did runaway, I believe they are to turn off autopilot, autothrottle, and turn off the stab trim switches, problem solved. Hand fly the plane from there.
@@francescoschettino5726 You’re speaking in terms of pre-grounding. Those type of crashes with MCAS aren’t physically possible anymore. Just check what they’ve done to make sure it can’t happen again.

I am interested if with a power failure would the plane be stable enough to fly on throttles with neutral control surfaces, albeit with difficulty, like that DC10 where a rear engine failure blew out its hydraulics? People say fighter planes are unstable but they do have zero zero ejector seats. Unless it is all so automated nowadays such that no electricity no fly. It is interesting how much redundancy there is compared to more inherently aerodynamically stable aircraft with increasing loss of pilot control if automated fly by wire systems start to fail.
thanks for the video Sam. I'll be looking at a 5 years track record before i got on Max. Funny how the video show that the airlines had to convince passengers that the aircraft is safe to fly rather than Boeing themselves. But saying the death of hundreds are "accidents" are just a bit light handed.
Well the general public probably doesn't spend their time keeping up with an aircraft manufacturer's tweets, so the airline is the one who ends up trying to convince passengers.

Max is slowly coming back soon in some countries. Love from Indonesia. Sam, I think this video will proof like other videos that the 737 MAX is safe to fly in the future after the Max is recertified to fly again from the FAA.
After all thats happened to the Max, I think that if the pilots and staff are happy to fly these planes now, Then we should be ok with them. The Max is now the most checked airplane out there now. So should be the safest. Lets just hope that there are no other issues, that are not related as it could be the death of that aircraft. Another great Video Sam.

1. The test engineers said it was junk and thought it was a joke

It’s good that the pilot talked about the plane and the M cast and showed how it works. Still a little scared though.

Was about booking my flight to Turkey 🇹🇷 and once I noticed I was gonna fly on the MAX 8, uhhh…
Will end up being one of the safest aircraft available but is a dark stain on the history of Boeing.
Dark stain quickly fading away, the future is looking better every day for Boeing and the aviation industry.

I just flew on the max for the first time and was pleasantly surprised. It was very smooth and comfortable.
@@DontUputThatEvilOnMe "He is just telling you that even if mcas wasn’t fixed they know how to disable it." Exactly.

Hi Sam this is Sriram SG from Chennai all your vlogs are good and I also wanted to travel with next trip
thanks for the video Sam.
