To me I think comes down to use. the 231 is very much a dress watch, something you wear with a suit and not much more than that. the 221 feels more versatile, so if you have a large collection and need a dress watch. 231 all the way. if you only have a few watches and need something to play more than one roll, the 221 is hard to argue with. I personally would get the 221 cause I'm a sucker for complications... GMT is awesome, and I like having the date.
I am recently looking at these two models as well and SBGR261 From the look I like 221 the most but I am hesitated to try an automatic GMT, as I might not be liking the difficulty on setting time and date when I don't wear it often

Does the 221 fit under a dress cuff for office watch duty? On paper it seems like that would be a challenge.
