If the US Postal Service “ran itself like a business” we wouldn’t be able to get packages delivered to rural Nebraska in two days. Try using one of the private postage companies and see how long it takes for your package to arrive somewhere with crappy service, even if it’s extremely close. If you’re lucky enough for UPS or Fed Ex to even get it delivered at all. Public goods were never meant to make money, and that’s what these ghouls don’t understand.

One of the few truisms to come out of spending money, especially when paying for services: "you get a better deal buying in bulk".

I have heard that in rural areas of the US delivery businesses like fedex hand last mile delivery over to USPS because the USPS *has to* serve everywhere, while it's not profitable for Fedex to do it. Here in a moderately rural location in Australia, the only delivery people I've ever seen besides Australia Post are the ones from Aramax, no matter what courier the seller sends it with. I mean, maybe there are dedicated Amazon ppl like in the US, but I haven't actually ever ordered anything from Amazon they had in their local warehouses.

This is one reason vouchers for schools are so dangerous. Public schools are required to accept and educate all students. Private schools only accept who they want and Charter schools use a lottery system and even then, they can remove students easily for a variety of reasons. Additionally, neither format of schooling is held to the same rigor for evaluation as public schooling which, combined with the much more real world diversity in the student population, automatically sheds a negative light on performance. As parents pull students from public schools, they take the money with them, and public schools wither. Students who are unable to get into private or charter schools are left in withering public schools. Trump's plan for public education is to basically eradicate it, so those who cannot make it into one of the two slim options will be left uneducated.

So the make-up of that "little" is determined by citizens electing representatives that best reflect their priorities. In addition, those representatives determine where "as much as possible" falls in the "charge as much as possible" given that they are accountable to the people. Ultimately, the people can decide when "enough is too much" by electing new representatives to the governing body. Try doing that with Goldman Sachs as an ordinary schmoe. Now it means the only customer is the shareholder and the only goal is to juggle the numbers to produce the ultimate stock price. Even in non union states most companies treated employees fairly well even if the pay was poor. That’s a distant memory. Fascism is here and it has deep roots in the lavish treatment of corporations and the military industrial complex above all else, at the expense of the working class.

    3) To provide those services that facilitate commerce (trade) that cannot be effectively or economically by the private sector. (See roads, public education, clean water, etc.)
