The Ocean's Most Important Crystal
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 жов 2024
- When we think of the ocean and what's in it, you probably think of stuff like fish, or salt, or seaweed. But there's a crystal that is so vital to marine life that they take dissolved materials in that salty water and build it themselves. This month's Rocks Box video, we're talking aragonite!

He is no mere crystal. He is Aragonite, son of Arathonite. You owe him your allegiance.
I came here to say, "You have my bow."

And my Thumbs Up!
😂😂 I seriously choked on my food.. LAST place I expected to hear a LOTR quote 😊😊😊❤❤❤❤
*kneels* ... you have my shell!
As a geology professor who has a parricular fondness for carbonate minerals, this video is definitely going in the "show my students" bin.
Load the toe; unload the head. (I remember a few other things from a college geology class; but, that was the one that really stuck with me.)
You're looking healthy. Congrats on beating cancer 🎉
Agree
That's always the first thing I note personally as well. Glad to see others as happy as I am to see him doing good!
late to the party just means fashionably late to the party. welcome to the party🎉
I wish my mom had beat it :/
I’m glad hank’s still here but I can’t help thinking “why not her too?”
I know, I still get a big grin when I see him hosting again
the thumbnail is so wholesome. Hank looking as cheery as ever talking science is the stuff I live for
Yes I was very happy to see him thriving
what ahppened to his cancer?
@@poweredman To my understanding, it's effectively gone at this point, but he still has to deal with some life long after effects of it.
Star wars ep 5
I'm a Geologist and I'm always thankful for shows like this one that propagates knowledge about crystals and rocks. Before I went to college, almost no one understood the bare minimum about geology and nowadays it's much easier to explain more complex subjects to non geologists. Thank you for this wonderful work, Scishow!
Rocks are shiney someimescool ok
Welp, we made it a whole day into 2024 before Hank started talking about weird poop. That's not necessarily a bad thing, in fact when Hank doesn't talk about poop or butts for more than a day or so I start to worry about him a bit.
You can bet I'll be ruining my family's next vacation when I tell my kids their sandcastle is made of parrotfish poop (and I'll teach them some history too when they learn that moats were basically castle septic systems, so it all comes full circle!)
Here's hoping 2024 isn't as crappy as 2023! 💩

Calcite crystals have a unuque optical property that was used to make Viking Sunstones, by covering the 4 sides entirely and leave a slit in the covering on the top and leave the bottom uncovered. When you look through from the bottom you will see 2 strips of light instead of one, the one closer to the light source, even if it is behind clouds or below the horizon/behind an object will be brighter. When both strips are the same brightness you are pointed directly at the object.
Icelandic feldspar!
@@Faesharlyn quite right, it turns out now that I think of it, there is some nice optical quality right across the street (unless the cold rain has washed it away since it's more soluble in cold water than hot) and imma try to gather some to make sunstones for my pagan friends, nowhere near as nice as mine mind you but still
@@ConstantChaos1 with some carefully placed strikes you might be able to make something really special from a beat-up looking bit of shiny rock, I hope your endeavor is successful!
@Faesharlyn thank you for the well-wishes, I have a fair bit of experience mining my own gems and I come from a clan that never lost its focus on crafting so I have a wealth of experience, im really just concerned they may have eroded away since I saw them last since they were like in the breakwater from a channelized wetland valley so there has been a fair bit of water to have potentially eroded them but I think some new ones were placed recently. Thanks again I love to get to nerd out lol
another fun fact about calcite and its optical properties is that some trilobites (ancient isopod-like marine arthropods) actually had eyes with calcite lenses - they used crystal rocks to see!
Hank is my favourite guy on the internet.
Word. I love learning new things but hate being talked to like an idiot. Talk smart to me.
If that kind of sand is pooped out by a fish that basically poops little crystals, then that’s a _lot_ less disgusting than when all I’d heard about that sand is that it was some kind of fish poop. In this case, thinking harder about it has been a good thing for me to not find it gross!
I have a vegan friend who thinks I'll flip out when hearing honey is bee vomit. If I'd never had it & didn't understand some scientific/biological realities of it, maybe. But nah lol
@@echognomecal6742 yeah, it is _incredibly_ tasty vomit!
@@DissociatedWomenIncorporated Now, I must admit, I've not done a comparative study, but once you've found something so delightful, no need.
(This is a quite enjoyable weird convo that I never expected to have in YT comments lol)
Happy New Year :)

May we all kick the @$$ of our own metaphorical KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!!
Super happy to see Hank looking so good, and him being so excited for a topic almost always rubs off on me. TIL Aragonite is neat!
He sure is looking well, im glad to see him recovering well, what a hoss of a man.
Fun fact:
Home (reef) aquariums that are very low in magnesium will form little crystals of calcium carbonate. You can tell when it happens because it looks like it is snowing inside your tank.
(It's also VERY bad).
I absolutely love your energy
That's the type of energy that beats up cancer!
Bot
That was freaking awesome!! The best part was finding out 70% of the sand is parrot fish poop LOL!
Only white/coral sand, aka aragonite sand, which is not that common. I don’t think most beach sand is made that way.
Edit: Of course he said 70% of sand in Hawaii and the Caribbean. I was thinking worldwide.
It's a bot
The rocks have been really fun so far. I live in a river delta area with barely any rocks and the little notes are fascinating.
To be clear: we have tiny rocks. But you don’t collect silt.
Really cool studio!
The script! The production quality! Is this what we can expect from SciShow now? 10/10
I l like the new set and presentation style adjustment. Love you and the team! Happy New Year!
OMG that clock radio.
As a plumber that specializes with residential water filtration, conditioning and softening, this entire video made sense to me. As Hank said, the amount of magnesium in the water will depend if you get Aragonite or Calcite. In fresh water for potable use, has magnesium, which will cause Aragonite to form with certain conditioning systems.
Aragonite is sometimes fluorescent under UV light. If you have a real UV light, like a 365 nm one, not one of those purple flashlights you buy for $10, you might see your specimen glow a little bit. If you have a shortwave UV lamp (254 nm) you’ll likely get a brighter glow, especially if it’s a green glow.
All of you have Rocked! Love all you do! Make us smarter!
Happy new year Hank. I hope you have a healthy year.
The thing I find fascinating is the fact life uses Aragonite / or / Calcite for shells depending on the current Ph conditions.
How resilient ocean life is, on such a base level, regarding changes to the environment, is always astounding.
I'd be interested to know if any invertebrates exist that can switch between the 2 in a single generation?
Oh hey! I just learned about aragonite in the context of fish tanks this week. I just added aragonite substrate to help add more minerals to the water and raise the ph for my snails and shrimp.
This is my favorite presenter. He speaks as if he is excited about the material.
Hank is such a legend. I like SciShow more because he’s involved. Thanks, people.
"The backbone of marine invertebrates" is a sentence I never thought I would hear... thank you for bringing this contradiction to light Hank 😂
I like this format & this was a great video! I'm happy Hank is healthy and full of energy.
Us reef aquarium owners really appreciate you doing this video- And I’m so glad to see you looking healthy!
I love the set and style of this video, it's very nice.
You can free yourself from a great burden by coming to terms with the fact that so darn much of the matter we encounter in our daily lives has passed through the gut of another organism - recently even!
When I saw you with so many weird facts on Dimension 20 I just thought you had just come across them by adhd tangents. Then I discovered you had a whole show for weird facts. Bless.
Also, I loved seeing you as The Fix. Wonderful stuff.
Now that I know seawater can naturally firm crystals, fantasy stories that contain crystalline underwater cities make leudonarrative sense.
Something cool to add to future D&D aquatic-themed homebrew.
I'm loving this set.
0:07 what a wave shot! so gorgeous
Hank! I’m just extra happy to see you, every time i see you. So glad to see you healthy.
I always learn something new here. All the best in the new year!
I would have thought ice was the ocean's most important crystal.
You look great man! So glad to see you looking well, i hope you're feeling as good as you look!
Love you Hank. Your the best.
Wow, great video. I learned a lot. I figured that you were going to say sodium chloride. I had known about the Parrotfish's part in ocean formation but that it was aragonite was new to me. Thank you informative as always.
Hank's disappointment about not getting a real giant pearl for demonstration was palpable.
Oh my goodness I haven't seen episodes since this new set was introduced and it's magnificent. As is Hank. Hank is also magnificent.
This format and set was great. Hope you plan on doing more like this.
I'm so happy you're doing better now Hank, loving the new set and format it feels more personable and engaging. Been watching scishow since day 1 ❤❤
Glad to see you doing so well and healthy! ❤😊
I am so happy to see my favourite science boffin again. We love you Hank.
This will be the first month I recieve and though as a rockhound I do own a specimen of Aragonite already, I was clueless to how precious it is to the oceans I love so much and that surround my home. I am so excited for this to be my first stone from this subscription and that I snagged a sub. Thanks guys!!
Funny how I thought of magnesium when I saw the thumbnail. I couldn't quite remember aragonite but knew Mg was important. I haven't thought of this stuff since university Biology. Thanks Hank. Always interesting.
Ah yes, aragonite! A familiar sight to a gemmologist, seen in pearls! Also, definitely sounds like a gem that would fight Saruman 😂
Looking good and good to see you on camera, Hank! Hope you beat cancer, stay strong and keep rocking. ❤
G’day Hank, I would love to hear your take on the sedimentary formation of Australian opal in our ancient inland sea. I have the largest Oolitic opal matrix found so far, the story of its formation precedes opals formation. Thanks for doing what you do. 🤪👍
Stuff like this is why I love rocks n stuff :D
Crystals are dope af and the non-standard gem types are even cooler!
Hank, so nice to see you back and often.
Having Hank teach me about science makes me weirdly happy. ^_^
… I like this new format a lot!
Many of the caves in the cradle of mankind in South Africa are full of aragonite crystals, as a result of the dolomite and abundant magnesium (and other minerals) in the area. These crystals are especially pretty because they form long, bright, needle-like crystals that sparkle wildly when light is shone on them.
There are also a few examples of gypsum flowers and other calcium crystal formations too.
From your all clear 4 months ago to now...looking very healthy.. back to your usual sweet self..
Congrats ❤❤❤
0:53 "And there are tons of other ions floating around in seawater too, that came from other things that go all Wicked Witch and get melty when they get wet" 😂
Just heard you beat cancer once, welcome to the family my friend! Awesome job dude 💪
I'm definitely not a rock guy but these videos are super interesting and very well written.
Also, happy new year to the scishow folks! 🎉
Looking (and sounding) good, Hank!
Happy new Hank glad your still here with us.
Sure is nice to see you in 2024, bud. I hope you are feeling at least as healthy as you look.
Do good, be well!
Sold out in under six hours. That's pretty impressive.
Happy to see you doing well Hank.
HA! Only reason I know about this mineral is from having saltwater aquariums a few years ago. Getting aragonite sand was pretty common to use as the sand bed.
As someone who studied geology at university, I really enjoyed this video.
Weren’t kidding when you said they were selling out fast.
Glad to see you doing well
Very educational with good information. Thank you
I work full time in the gemstone industry, also with crystals for specimen purpose. I have KG's of a really cool aragonite called Sputnik aragonite which forms very interesting structures that form as like little explosions from the inside out.
I'm going to have to watch this a couple times over to remember everything. How aragonite formed on coral vs creatures was very interesting.
Your looking great Hank, so glad you are ok
Great to see you working again Hank!
LOVE this video. The format is great, I love the content, I love Hank and his delivery. 10/10
I’m very glad and very happy you’re doing well!!!
Thank you, Parrotfish, for giving us beautiful sandy beaches
I love this format!

I like this format!
While watching i was thinking how neat it would be collecting minerals and stuff based on my understanding of their function in our world. I got excited about getting monthly rocks -> sold out 😭
Looking great, Hank!
The sheer joy when you said "crystal blue" in the intro is contagious.
This is educating. Lovely concepts 🎉
I love it ❤
You can get it to deposit on a screen by giving it a charge using a solar panel on a float. Build artificial reefs etc.
Trippy stuff... Thank you...~~~~
